USA Biology Olympiad 2006

A question on how they decide the finalists: if, for example, there are 18 people who scored greater than or equal to M on the semifinal exam, and the next highest score, N, happened to be shared between four people. Would they just take in 22 finalists, or would they use some other criteria to select two people from those four? Just looking at posts here and talking to friends, it seems like there were quite a few scores bunched closely around the 103 range, and I was also wondering if the situation could apply to this year’s competition.

Some years they’ve taken 19 people, so maybe they would just stick with the 18…

No, in three years of USABO, there have been 20, 20 and 21 competitors. In that scenario, I expect one or two people would drop in favor of other olympiads or other summer programs, and they’d take all of the remaining four.

Man, how do you guys actually do all of the olympiads? Would anyone with such experience like to comment on how they studied (specifically ffsoul)?

uh…2004 weren’t there 19 people…

"2004 National Finals Results

Number of schools that have a National Finalist:
19 (16 public, 3 private)

Number of states represented in the National Finals:
11

Gender:
15 male, 4 female"

No, there were 20. A bit of a CEE secret what happened to that last one…

oh i see…

Umm, where does one check this stuff? I took it during the make-up week because of our spring break, and my teacher hasn’t heard anything about it yet.

if your teacher logs in, he/she can see your status.

haha they are officially released today. please PM me if you wish to see results :)

I didn’t make it either (10 points off.) It seems the USABO alums got lazy this year.

Dan?

i wanna do usabo next year. any tip to study?

Orange Juice, I would recommed that you read this thread. Lots of tips here.

@pea_sea04:
apparently there is only one person returning to usabo camp from last year.

@Orange Juice:
studying Campbell 7th ed. is enough.

ok i will.

pea: Yeah, they changed things up this year, and it seems you guys got hosed. Kinda lame. I was looking forward to some more Risk.

OJ: Studing Campbell was enough to make USABO in previous years. The changes made this year may mean that is no longer the case. USABO is still very young, and it’ll be a while before they figure out how they’re gonna do things.

but enough to study campbell to make semis?

My only resource was Campbell 7th edition. I started using Raven 6th edition only after the USABO call came.

Yeah, I’d say Campbell is more than enough for semis. There may be conflicting opinions about resources after you reach that point, however.

Hey, why do you guys think so few alums made it back this year? Did the change in testing “style” make as big an impact as it appears to have made?

Chris, don’t worry about the risk. I’ll be there, so there shall be risk. Some mafia, but mostly risk.

And lotsa lotsa plants.
