USC 2009 transfer thread

Well if your parents won’t give you access to their financial info, how are you planning on filing your CSS/finaid work?

That’s my question???

I didn’t know about the CSS before I went through the application process. I thought the FAFSA was enough. I am considered independent for FAFSA as I am almost 25 and self supporting. Why USC doesn’t use just FAFSA is beyond me.

This must have happened to someone before me!! Does this mean I wasted my time applying? or is there a way around it?? I’m just wondering if anyone has dealt with this before??

If you’re over 24 years old you can file as an independent person, but do you get financial support from your parents? If you do, then this will have to be reported. If they won’t give you access to their finances, ask them to fill out the CSS PROFILE for you. Or better yet, try and work out a deal in which they have a third party fill it out for you both. This is not uncommon, and given that you are self-supporting, you can probably dish out half the cost of pursuing this option.

Jmason, haven’t been in your position. I am sorry that your parents won’t give you their information. Perhaps they could fill out the form themselves, without you seeing it. This would maintain their confidentiality. I can sort of understand why they may not want you to see their financial information; BUT, what I do not understand is why they do not want to help you get into a good college and become more self sufficient. I say that because, by them showing you their financial info, it would fulfill an essential step for getting into USC, which, in the end contributes to your economic independence.

Ask them to fill out the CSS. Give them all you info, so they can write it on there, and have them send it out. That is the only thing that I can think of.

question: a “C” in a course that isn’t a pre-req for applying/major and also doesn’t fulfill a GE and is taken early (rather than later) in college isn’t as big of a strike than a “C” in one of the above, yes?

P.S. just to clarify - if you file as an independent person you would not need your parents’ financial information to apply for financial aid at USC.

Thanks for your advice but it’s just not me who they won’t release it to. It’s the CCS. They feel that since they give me no cash or support that it’s no ones business what their income is since it will not figure into my college. If it’s good enough for the FAFSA it should be good enough for anyone else.

Grey…

The CSS form does not say that. It says that if the parental info is asked for then the institution wants it. It doesn’t matter how old you are or if you are married or have kids or anything…

Then perhaps they can call USC and tell them the issue. Perhaps something can be resolved. Or, you can tell USC the issue. I don’t know what else you would do if they do not want to release their info.

If that clause doesn’t have an asterisk by it, then call USC financial aid tomorrow and explain the situation. Please let us know what happens.

I still haven’t heard back from USC. No letters or anything. Should I be worried??

uh, no. we’ll be waiting til late May, early June.

sooooooooo sweet rave party! :D

yooooo my CCerssssssss - whats upppppppp
grab a bottle of jack and join the party :P

grey_syntactics: I know that they won’t send the decisions until June. But I had a friend who applied as a transfer student last year and all throughout the year, she would get letters from them. I haven’t received even a single piece of mail telling me that they at least got my application.

Hello all,

So I was at a conference at USC and there were some important announcements made about transfer admissions.

We were told that USC might be adopting “Conditional Admissions” for highly competitive transfer students in order to counteract the anxiety that comes with the long wait. This also comes with the idea of counteracting the fact that many students are tempted to accept the UC’s offer of admission simply because they let their applicants know a lot earlier. No word on when this will officially happen, it is speculated to begin this year.

If this is all true, then I envy you early “conditional” admits, lol. :)

Oh my gosh. I hope that happens. That would be so awesome. But, if it is conditional, that leads me to think that they want to see this semester’s grades, aka, SGR. Which sucks. Or it can be that conditional just means that you’re in without really saying “you’re in”. Adopt it USC. Do it. Just do it.

WomanOfTroy, you seem to be really involved at USC. For those on here that get accepted, when we do, please let us know how we can also get involved in other things besides the typical clubs (which are good too)

ahhh woman of troyyyyyyyy havent seen you in ages! hows USC treating you? :)

CaptainRodeo-
Apparently this would allow the person to commit to USC and hold their spot unless something terrible happened (like failing prereqs or other classes).
USC asks to see spring grades when you’re admitted anyway, so the likelihood that an admitted student is rescinded is very, very rare.

Also, though clubs are really good to join, it’s really up to you to amp up your social life. A lot of people here are involved in clubs so if you live on or around campus, you’ll often hear about events. It’s all about facebook and just being a generally energetic, polite person. :stuck_out_tongue: Btw, I will be working at USC Annenberg this summer and also working with the Orientation Programs welcoming the new transfers, so I hope to see some of you there. :D

Zircushio- Yeah, I apologize for that, hope you guys aren’t freaking out over admissions. I don’t really have time to go over all the pages written since I last logged on, lol. I’m fine, really busy but finally in the groove of just being here. It’s been pretty amazing. I actually came back to CC beccause I’m planning on applying to grad school next year so I need major guidance. I can’t believe I’m doing this again. :/
