USC 2010 Transfer Thread

hey sorry to break into the thread here but i was wondering if you guys could help me out. I was recently denied admissions to USC’s freshman class of 2014. I plan to attend community college this fall and transfer out.

However, the problem is I am an out of state student, so there is no articulation agreement with the CC. I emailed a USC counselor but basically told me to go see the Transfer Brochure. I plan to major in Business, so I am aware of Marshall’s pre-requirements. However, I’m confused on the General Education classes. Should I just go on the articulation website and model my schedule similar to the ones from a California Community College? Thanks.

tibbs, I am in an identical situation as you, with near-identical stats (4.0 at a CC; 37 units completed at end of Spring). If we receive a SGR, I’m pretty sure that they will eventually give us an update notifying us of the SGR. This update could potentially come before or after we receive a letterin the mail, so we’ll just have to be patient. I’m just hoping we hear sooner than later. Knowing that I have a SGR going into finals would relieve a lot of stress, and would undoubtedly make me super motivated to finish the semester strong.

@dbroncos- i would try to use the articulation and try to get as close as you can. Most classes will transfer from your CC…make sure to complete the pre-req. thats the most important and basically the only classes technically required to transfer.

Hey you guys keep talking about Viterbi releasing early…any idea of when Viterbi applicants should start getting decisions? Have some already been released?

@arcadefire - from my knowledge, 2 people have heard back on here and both werre engineering majors they got the acceptance saturday i think and it was sent fri if i rememebed correctly so u can go back 2 days and check it out

to tbibbs: From my understanding, if your in a community college in california, you should actually be in a better position than me coming from out of state. I could be wrong though. You would think that they want to meet a certain demographic of out of state students, but who knows. Your stats still are equally as impressive. My essay, in my personal opinion was extraordinary. I spent my entire fall semester meeting with my Composition II professor editing and revising it, and we both feel it is very strong, so that is what im banking on.

To Dreaming USC: Actually, I would believe that Kines., which was my second choice major, is actually more difficult to get into. We all know that Biology is a tough degree field, however, The Physical Therapy graduate program is #1 in the nation at USC based upon the research i have done. Therefore, that would lead me to conclude that the undergrad program(i.e. Kines.) would have stricter standards as far as admissions is concerned.

@tbibbs

thanks. Yeah that’s what I thought of doing, but just wanted to clarify. Thanks again.

If any of you business students are interested, here is a good video from HBS graduating address by James Dimon (CEO JP Morgan Chase).

There are lots of these types of videos and I find them very insightful and motivating. Equally important, they help me pass the time rather than worrying about my status or admission stuff! hah

sorry for the double post but to @BeauSelisker1990, I think you’re right. I was looking at the transfer guide and about 22% are from out of state universities, or about 530 students out of the 2500 admitted.

@beau…thanks, i know what you mean on the essay. I spent all fall in the writing center, thankfully there was a retired guy in there and he went to Stanford and then taught english at USC and i guess as a professor you have to have a committee position and his job was to read application essays so he helped me make it legit in my opinion, so hopefully the process hasnt changed in 100 years cuz he was pretty old hahaha! but he was a straight boss and i got super lucky that he was at sierra college.
Good luck to you and for that matter to everyone on here!!!

Hmm, I hope it’s not a bad sign if I’m in Viterbi and my status still hasn’t changed to the “committee is reviewing” shiz.

Don’t let this process, and the result if it comes out negative bring you down. Keep striving for greatness, and don’t settle.

I can speak for myself, and say if the results are not what I am hoping for, I will be moving out to orange county this summer. I have a passion for education, and seek success. Therefore, my research obviously shows that the best colleges around the country are in California. I will establish residency, work as hard as I have been, and reapply if need be next year.

Words to the wise: Never settle for less.

Did any Interactive Entertainment applicants hear back yet? I’m hoping to get in. What do you guys think my chances are of getting in? From what I hear it’s a really hard major to get into. I’m pretty confident I’ll get into the school but not the program. I got a 4.0 GPA, Double major in Film/Philosophy, Honors Program, Deans List, ex-army. Currently attending a small public commuter school in Illinois.

@dbroncos23 - The transfer guide is a good guide to plan the GE cat transfers after. I planned out my curriculum this year using it before seeing an actual articulation history between my cc out of state and usc and everything I guessed might transfer has apparently transferred successfully for past transfers from my cc.

my first major is in Viterbi. this is killing me

so after a status change…then wat? few weeks before another? or does it vary…
you can still get rejected right?

from what i’m reading, it’s possible to take summer courses this summer and still transfer the credits? i thought that once admitted -or offered admission- we can not undergo anymore schooling outside of USC without their permission? does anyone know if this is correct or am i just misinformed?

This no status update is making me really nervous!

@Budlightyear: I think that once you’ve registered at SC you can’t take courses outside of SC for credit. I assumed that meant we’d be able to take summer courses, but nothing after you start at SC. I might be wrong, but that’s what I’d inferred. :</p>

@dchrysler: I think you may be correct, thanks for clarifying. I’ll give them a call tomorrow just to make certain that it would be possible to do so as I am seeing a few of us are planning on taking some courses this summer.
