USC 2010 Transfer Thread

@eshug I believe it’s 6 weeks after you receive your admission package

The last few days have been going by sooooo sloow! and we still have about a month :(!

@Dainese, sorry for the late reply. Basically… it sort of hit me in two situations. Last spring I just realized that I don’t like UCLA very much. Like I have no solid friendships here. I AM like… philanthropy chair for a fraternity and involved in the student accounting society and whatnot, but at the same time, I just don’t like it that much here. I’ve always been a USC fan. Since I’ve been a little kid, I’ve wanted to go there. I didnt originally becuase I didn’t want to spend 50k a year. I was originally accepted viterbi/marshall for a compsci business double major program… which now that I look at it, I am glad I didn’t go into engineering. That isn’t for me.

The second situation arose this past fall when I was applying for study abroad courses. I’m currently a business economics major… which is basically econ, and a few accounting courses. I had always wanted to take actual business classes. So when it came time to study abroad at a university with business courses, I was trying to take initiative and take those classes. I wanted case study scenarios… finance classes… anything of that sort. I went to turn in my schedule to the econ office as one of the final steps and the lady basically said “you can’t take any of these classes. they don’t transfer since we have no business department so it would be useless.” I just realized… I’m not exactly studying what I want to study. And if UCLA offered those classes, I would most likely opt to stay here. But If college is supposed to be about growing as an individual and taking up opportunities in a field that interests you, I want to be presented with those opportunities first.

So now I wait. And May 1st is going to roll around… and I guess I’ll drop 1000 on an international program that I am not going to if I get into USC, which is a little bit of a buzzkill.

@Lustrous-Unless you’re a rising sophomore, it’s almost impossible to get on-campus housing. My gf said transfers do actually get some preference over returning students like her (She had to move off campus after sophomore year) but still, for incoming juniors, it is highly unlikely you’ll be able to live on campus. I guess there’s always Tuscany if you want to live in a “nice apartment” but it’s major $$.

HEY so random question…

what did you guys put for the short answer question,
“Describe your academic interests and how you plan to pursue them at USC. Please feel free to address your first- and second-choice major selections?”

not trying to compare or judge or anything just a light hearted question cuz that was my favorite part to write!

i’d love to hear what you guys put either generally or word for word :)

did transfers have the “quick takes”?

@dbroncos23- yeah we did. the app is the same as for freshman for the most part

My short answer responses are definitely not that strong. My essay was definitely a billion times better. I am almost embarrassed to post this…oh well its too late to change it on my app anyways, but this is what i wrote:

My academic interest is to pursue a business degree from USC. I began studying sports business as a junior in high school, while studying Introduction to Marketing and decided to further advance my knowledge by joining FBLA and competing in sports business events. Sport business is a possible career I wish to pursue. At USC, I would take advantage of all the resources of the Marshall School of Business. One opportunity I find interesting would be to join the Sports Business Association in order to develop further knowledge about the career paths in sports. With such renowned sport business leaders, I believe joining the SBA would be an amazing opportunity to learn from and network with the top executives in sports. I also plan on pursuing a double major in business and accounting.
However, if I do not decide on sports business, recently I have been interested in green business. I find taking care of our environment is imperative. I believe green business is our future and believe it will revolutionize our current technology such as advances in electric cars and solar panels. I find it interesting that USC is at the forefront and has incorporated green business into their curriculum, and I would definitely enroll in classes which emphasize green business.

This response was too long, and definitely the weakest of all my short answers, but here it is:

Few prominent universities offer a degree in kinesiology; despite this, USC does just that, including a program that is of a high ranking. Although I am currently under the exercise science track, I’d opt for pre-med at USC, as I am passionately aspiring admission into the Keck School of Medicine as well as a career in physiatry, or a “doctor of physical therapy”. I would concentrate on graduating in a reasonable three years so as to remain diligent yet not overwhelmed. A high GPA would be imperative for med-school; however, world-renowned professors and leaders in conjunction with a hands-on teaching philosophy would assist me in attaining what I need. Furthermore, many organizations including the Kinesiology Club, American Medical Student Association, Pre-Med Mentoring Society, and the Student Health Advisory Club would facilitate relationships with other students within my major in addition to allowing me to focus on my interests. Outside of campus, I would direct my attention to local internships within Los Angeles’ vast community. Though my practice in the field is limited to high school experiences, such as an internship in sports medicine and a surgery-viewing, I feel confident that a USC education would prepare me in fulfilling my medical ambitions.

@tbibbs and @dreamingUSC

They’re solid short answers. Give an answer to the question being asked.

Now that I look back on my quick takes, I just laugh. I don’t know why I rushed the app. I think I put “astronaut” for my dream job. Not very creative. Haha.

my dream job was “owner of the San Francisco Giants”, straight bosses!

^^ that’s a creative response. I don’t follow much of west coast baseball, since I’m on the east coast with the Evil Empire haha, but I do know Lincecum is a filthy pitcher.

Lincecum is a so legit. You really need to seem him in person, like you watch on tv and your like oh yeah he is small, but then you seem in person and he is tiny compared to other players. The craziest part is he looks like he is our age which is ridiculous because he pretty much is. But yeah it pretty much is my dream job which is why i want to pursue a career in sports business and work my way up. I dont really want to be constricted to a cubicle when I grow up. I am very active and that wouldnt fit my personality.

haha tbibbs I put “owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers” for my dream job :)

What’s up with the Marshall curve? Someone in another thread said it’s still in effect.

I thought it was canceled.

it is no longer required to have a curve at marshall, but most professors still use it in order to have the average grade at 3.0

haha thats awesome Jocelyne! I have always loved the giants, especially since we have season tickets. Its funny cause everyone hated Bonds for steroids and then dodgers pick up Manny and he gets suspended for them. maybe one day we will have a friendly rivalry :)

@tbibbs

Definitely. That’s one of the first things I’m going to do when I go out there. Enjoy a couple of games. Basketball/baseball. Seems there is always something to do in the area. You are right though. His curve ball is insane.

I am right there with you @dbroncos, I will attempt to be at every sporting event I can. My good friend that is going to Oregon has an amazing internship. He is a football recruiting intern. so next year he will be showing all the recruits around oregons campus, taking them on the field during games, introducing them to players and coaches and the works. So he said he will fill me in on the recruiting. I definitely want to see if USC has anything like this, maybe if I let Kiff in on what my friend tells me about who Oregon is recruiting I can get a job haha. Not that USC can’t get Oregon recruits

I put “USC Undergraduate Admissions” for my dream job.

hahahaha, you have some brown stuff on your nose you might want to wipe off lustrous… Just playing! I think if I get in I would want to help out maybe show accepted freshman around. Who knows maybe there will be some hot freshman
