USC 2010 Transfer Thread

USC10, the only thing I can think of is doing the steps out of order. Did you get all the preceding steps checked off? Even if you don’t do them, you can still get them counted as done.

Hey, this may sound very silly but I am having trouble finding out how to submit my enrollment commitment deposit online. Does anyone know how? I am doing this all last minute because I just found out that I was accepted a few days ago! Thank you

You’ll find a link to it under “Admissions” on USConnect but that can take up to a week to happen. If you’d like, you can go ahead and do it now at https://camel2.usc.edu/AdmCertification/Commit.aspx.

@krsty can you confirm your post about the university grant subtracting the cal grant difference and still giving you the same university grant? I have a friend who attended USC last year and he told me on his financial aid package, there was a portion awarded to him by cal grant that was specifically noted as a cal grant award and not a university grant. I don’t think it makes sense that a university grant would essentially take money away from you if you’re a California resident, simply to cover their own costs. Meaning you do not benefit whatsoever from being a California resident. Although USC is a private institution, I highly doubt that they will do this to students, as they know students are in desperate need to pay for college and with a high amount awarded by cal grants and a low efc, would imply that the student would need as much as help they can get.

xdzzzrawr, look at alamemom’s post at the bottom of this page, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/839970-faq-usc-financial-aid-2010-a-33.html.

It’s unintuitive but it does kind of make sense. If your determined need is, say, 30,000 then that means you’ll receive 30,000 in total aid. If an outside source, like California, gives you X then your need is now 30,000 - X. They could take it off your loans but this way it saves the institution some “money”. You do still potentially benefit a little from being a California resident since 59% of the students at USC are in state. That could be because of who happens to apply or it could be an actual benefit in admission.

@Serapher thank you for your post, but do you think they will take it directly off of my university grant or will they be generous enough to allocate it by taking it off my loans, that way I will still have more money since I am not planning on using any of the loans.

It looks like it comes off your university grant, based on alamemom’s post.

Thanks Serapher!!

@xdzzzrawr and serapher It does in fact come off of your university grant. Cal Grant and university grant are both allocated to cover tuition only - so it’s essentially free money for USC, not you. It sucks because I’m sure all of us could use the 9K.

Is there anyone who’s not going to orientation at all besides me? For those of you who have gone, am I missing a lot?

@phloser: well I guess yea, for me who’s not really familiar with USC, the orientation helped me understanding which classes I need to take, finding possible classmate, and what kind of involvement and activities I’ll have.

Also, you’re going to register for your classes on the orientation so you may not have the best choice for your classes. But, I think other than that you’ll be able to catch up pretty quick once school starts

@anyone: I have a question about my financial aid. If I got an outside scholarship for tuition, books and fees only, is it going to lower my university grants? :)

It seems very probable that any new scholarships and or grants would be deducted from your university grant according to the FA thread Serapher linked earlier.

Post #498 from the USC FA thread:
"I am not aware of any official form. What we usually do is type up a short letter stating that:

*I (the student) have received a scholarship in the amout of ($$$$) from (sponsoring agency) that can be used for (put whatever restrictions the sponsoring agency places: tuition-only, tuition/room/board, tuition/room/board/books and expenses, or “any college-related expense…”). Please use this scholarship to replace (all or part) of my (subsidized Stafford loan or work/study) award.

Thank you,

Tommy Trojan*

Be sure to reference your USC student ID # and include a copy of the award letter from the sponsoring agency.

If you don’t let them know about it before it arrives, they often just reduce your USC grant automatically - it never hurts to try to get it applied to your loans. (Recently a student reported that they did not reduce his loans - they reduced the grant - so it doesn’t always work.)"

I’m being offered stafford loans. I have also received a $5,000 scholarship from an outside agency. How do I go about applying that to my financial aid file (specifically to reduce the loans awarded to me)?

Thanks itsyouitsme!

johnUSC310, see BGKing’s post.

phloser, I agree with itsyouitsme. With meeting people, there’s a lot of students in CLAS so it makes things really hectic. In a more specialized school like SPPD, which I think you’re going to, there’s probably a better chance to run into the same people. Still, you can meet people easily enough once school starts. I’m not sure if they save classes for people who don’t go to orientation. Even if they do, I’m not sure how many slots they save per orientation session in the first place, either. That’s probably the most important thing to consider.

Serapher, thanks for your response. I’m surprised that you remember which school I’m in! Yeah, I’m a little worried about registering for classes since some people are already saying they had difficulty with classes being filled.

To be honest, I cheated. I referenced the transfer decisions thread.
I didn’t think about it earlier but I’m not sure if you can still make a reservation for the 23rd. You can’t make any more changes if you’ve already booked. I’m not sure if that applies to new reservations. If you want to go maybe they’ll let you do it if you call.

Hi, does anyone know, will USC still send out acceptance letters either for fall or Spring, because I sent my Spring Grade like one month ago, and up to now, i still have not heard anything from them yet, and once i called, they just said have my spring grade and take coupe more days. Jesus, thats really slow. hope god bless me and gives me an admission.

Is anyone else going to the July 23 orientation?

Me! What’s your major?
