USC 2011 Transfer Thread

@chase

haha don’t worry about it, I learned about SGRs from these forums. SGR stands for Spring Grade Request. USC sends you one if they for some reason want to see your Spring Grades before making a final admission decision. Its usually to see what grade you got in a pre-req if you have one in progress or if maybe they want to see an upward trend if your academic record isn’t that strong.

And the writ130 requirement is the english requirement that needs to be completed before transfering to USC. Usually two English classes fulfill that requirement. At my CC you have to take English 101 then either 102 or 104 to complete the req.

How would we know if our Freshman writing course covered it writ130?

@coolio … if you’re at a CC, see if your school has an articulation agreement with USC. it should be listed there. if not, then call the counselor for your area and ask him/her, they should know.

@chasethecarrot thanks but i am international applicant so its hard for me to call :slight_smile: I sent an email last week and they said my application is complete but it still says the same thing in my status. I think they really are quite busy these days.

i see that most people apply for business, economics and that kind of stuff. has anyone applied for engineering? or industrial engineering?

what do you think of my chances?

college gpa: 3.28
credits: 52
industrial engineering
international applicant

i know that i have low gpa but engineering is harder than other majors. Do they consider this? and since there is low demand for engineering, can i get in ?

@coolio

here is the link to see the articulation agreement between your school and USC.

Thanks for the info! By the way, how soon did you hear about your financial aid package after you received your admission letter? And if you applied for FAFSA, could you tell us if there was much difference between your FAFSA EFC and USC’s EFC?

@whisper, haha nah, I go to a private Uni in Upstate New York so I guess I should just ask my counselor. Thanks though!

@whisper I was wondering how is your profile like? Just wondering in regards to your status. Have you finished all pre-reqs etc…

@whisper11

I cannot give you the exact date but i got it pretty soon
I remember, when I got my ucla admission and financial aid packet
I was able to compare it with my USC one.
so i think it was within 2 or 3 weeks…
but I had all of the required fin aid materials turned in…

@hyethga4lyfe

I’m not sure if they will always ask for SGR if your English130 isn’t completed at the time of admission decision, but I’ll say there is a chance for it to happen as 2 English courses are required before transfer admission. But at least you’re taking it right now so don’t worry too much and just focus on passing the class :slight_smile:

@coolio

I didn’t know you were from other state, my bad. Maybe you can check this website (USC:Transfer Planning Guide) and see if your school is listed. If not, yeah you have to ask your counselor.

@prok

I finished 55 USC transferable units at CCC including math and English (which are “core courses required for admission” according to Transfer Planning Worksheet found here - http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1011/TransferPlanningWorksheet_2010.pdf</a>) and also finished psychology major requirement classes.

As for “core courses recommended for admission”, which are language and diversity, I finished a diversity class. I didn’t finish the language requirement but I graduated from a foreign high school at where English was not the primary language, so I plan to take “THE 3RD SEMESTER ON THE USC FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAMINATION(TESTING BUREAU)” stated in psychology transfer planning guide to cover for this area after being admitted (if they let me…).

For “GE courses recommended for admission,” I finished a few categories (there are categories I~VI) but not all of them. However, the pdf link above states that 2 of those 6 categories must be taken at USC anyway and that they are not required to be taken before transfer admission (to quote, it says “To graduate, USC undergraduates are required to take one course in each of the six categories listed. Successful applicants to USC will fulfill at least some of these courses before being admitted.”). I got my A.A. last December and am transferring with 4.0, but didn’t do much EC or community service.

Sorry for the long post again!

@samuelkim

That’s nice you could compare it with UCLA’s. Was USC more generous than UCLA or UCB’s financial aid packages? Where do you go now?

Do any of the Marshall Business Administration Transfers know if we need to fulfill the language requirement?

And if so, does high school count?
I did four years of spanish in high school all with B or better

Thanks,
JDS

@hyethga4lyfe- Thank you so much. You not only answered my question, but also addressed the one that would have been prompted next! That’s awesome, looks like I should be good to go for now. And thanks for making me feel better about asking- sometimes I just try to guess about things on here because it seems like literally EVERYONE knows standard protocol that I’m clueless too (even just things like abbreviations, how to make a quote in a post, etc). I usually try to find answers on my own but it’s getting really tiring lol, so it’s nice to just flat-out ask and not be treated like a moron. :)

@nacliamsi- sorry, I didn’t realize! But I’d definitely say that email was your answer. I think it’s just as you said- they’re REALLY busy right now. Also, if I knew more about engineering I’d chance ya, but I really have no idea, sorry! But if I had to guess I’d say that’s a good GPA for such a difficult major. Did you have some cool EC’s, good essays and recommendations, etc.?

Just a reminder to all- don’t forget to make sure all of your financial aid stuff is in, too! I know we’re all caught up in making sure our apps are complete and ready for review, but especially for those of us who applied to a few colleges, it can be (somewhat) easy to forget a few things, like making sure your financial aid file is also complete. Good luck, guys!! I’m so excited I can barely sit still…and there are still months to go most likely, lol! AAARGH!

@JDSFTW

I’m not a business major, but I can tell you business department does not require foreign language courses, according to the pamphlet I picked up at USC admission, Transferring to USC 2011.

@chasethecarrot

I didn’t know how to quote either so I googled it and found this page - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/community-forum-issues/319819-how-do-you-quote-someone.html</a>. If you wanna know more about other types of tags, you can find the information here - [College Confidential - BB Code List](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/misc.php?do=bbcode). Hope it helps!

My financial aid documents tab says they received my FAFSA and PROFILE, but my tax return 2010 is still pending. I don’t know other people’s statuses but hope it’s normal for now.

I know, May is too far, I wish I would hear from them in early April like samuelkim last year! :)

For what it’s worth to help ease anxiety, my D was accepted as a USC transfer having taken NO foreign language courses. She did have a foreign language requirement which she satisfied AFTER she started attending USC. She fulfilled it by taking foreign language over the summer for two 6-week terms followed by one semester at USC.

@whisper … thanks! hopefully will get in without the SGR :slight_smile: … but yea, for now i’m just going to focus on getting an A in that class.

@chase … its no problem! we’re all here to help eachother out! always ask whatever you wana know, nobody should make you feel stupid. we all had to learn this stuff somehow, right?

lets do this guys! just a couple more months. lets focus on getting 4.0’s this semester :)

@coolio2244242

I’m from out of state too and I check this website for an articulation history

Error;

it’s not guaranteed that the credits will transfer, but unless there has been a significant curriculum change in a course then they should. It just gives a good basis for what usc accepts, especially for the english requirement.

Make sure to kind of play around with the name of your school because USC couldn’t find my school under the histories because they were looking for Indiana University but it’s listed under Indiana Univ

Hope this helps!

@whisper11

//And if you applied for FAFSA, could you tell us if there was much difference between your FAFSA EFC and USC’s EFC?

This, I am not sure… even now im not sure that EFC even stands for but based on my profile, I got a okay financial aid… Its already an year ago and i cant quiet recall…
in amount USC offered alot and weirdly, the my cost (i think it was 10~15k) was same. So basically after the fin aid (excluding loan) I would need to pay about 10~15k for both schools.

but now I am attending Cal.

ps. how do you quote other people’s reply? cant seem to do it

just logged on to USConnect and am not able to see the status of my application anymore, is anyone else in the same boat? I was wondering if anyone knew the “backdoor” method to check if an applicant got admitted

Check the link below to see the standard coding.

To quote you need to:
[ quote]
XYZ
[/ quote]
Of course remove the spaces but that is the set up. Click the link and you’ll see examples.

It’s several pages back. Plus, it’s too early. Someone said they haven’t even started looking at applications yet.
