USC Class of 2024 Applicants Thread

@ellaturner I did!! I am so nervous

@CADREAMIN @WWWard: Do you think USC’s admission rate of 11% is artificially high for business majors given how extremely difficult it is to get into some of the highly selective schools such as cinema and computer science?

@Justinhope I think it’s higher than the other schools, but still low

Scholarship recipients will be notified of their award on Friday and Financial Aid packages will be updated in your Fast Portal sometime early next week.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in the region release thing…it was an answer to a question on twitter. They didn’t put it out there themselves.

Thanks for the update!

@CADREAMIN thanks so much for the info!

@Justinhope Yes… certain Schools within USC, like SCA, Thornton, Kaufman and Marshall, are even more competitive than the overall USC admission rate. And within those Schools, certain majors… like Writing for Film/TV (1-2%) and Production (2-4%) within SCA, are even more so. While Dornsife’s, because of its size and scope, is less so (maybe more in the range of 12-14%). Again, last year’s 11% admission rate was overall. So the School selected and even the first and second choice majors can play a critical role in the admissions process.

@whistle7 You’re welcome. Good luck…

What are people thinking the timing for different regions will be on releasing decisions?

Yes thank you parents who continue to post! I’m terrified and want to throw up at the idea of not be an exception to the rule.

There are 44 admission counselors I believe with assigned territories. So, they could be releasing based on those groupings or a collection of those groupings… as what they are now referring to as regions. When they mailed out packages in the past, there was a natural order based on whether you were in the day one, day two or day three delivery zones per USPS. So, they could also release in that sort of regional order. But unless they announce the projected order of regions, we are simply left to speculate.

If you intend to simply keep checking your admission portal throughout the day tomorrow, I do not recommend simply refreshing it more than a handful of times. I would instead check it and then close that tab periodically and start the process anew. Doing so seems to work better, based on past experience, as it lessens the likelihood of the portal simply getting overloaded and freezing up for you… or you simply viewing a cached page versus the latest.

Be patient. Tens of thousands will be doing the exact same thing.

And good luck to all…

I wonder what the SDA admission rate is?

@WonderfulJourney Hard to say. I would speculate that SDA’s admission rate, like all of the creative and performing arts majors, is less than the overall USC average, but that can also vary by sought major. Clearly, BFA candidates face a tougher task than those only applying for BA degrees. What specifically were her first and second choices?

BFA SDA first choice, then BA SDA second. But, because she is in theatre and applied to competitive schools, all of her them were 1-8% admittance. She has some great choices, and also did get accepted to one of her top schools, which is wonderful, but now waiting for USC SDA which could knock her top off it’s spot!

How hard is it to get into USC for Biology (1st choice major) and Political Science (2nd choice major) in comparison to the overall acceptance rate? I would assume they are much easier to get into than a major in SCA.

according to prev years, do we get an email immediately after the status update or will there be a delay? not sure if i should keep refreshing my email or portal haha, thankyou :>

@WWWard how competitive is Dornsife? My 1st major was mathematics and my 2nd choice major was physics/computer science. Are these competative majors for Dornsife (along with Pre-Teaching as my option)?

@WonderfulJourney Understood. That should help actually.

My older daughter selected BA Theatre for her first choice and was admitted as such. I do not even recall what her second choice was. But she did so because she also wanted to take two minors, cinematic arts and communication (entertainment industry). She thought that a BFA would monopolize her time too much and prevent her from taking two minors. Her focus within SDA also ended up being very SCA-oriented, and the BFA seemed more stage-centric. I think she was in like 10-15 SCA short films and only like 1-2 plays while at USC. In fact at her graduation, the SDA Dean joked that she was the most IMDb famous of her graduating class due to all the credits there. But that was and is still her primary focus… film/tv versus stage.

That is really the great thing about USC, and not just within the creative Schools. You can really become your own chief academic adviser and set up a game plan that works best for your own wants and needs. Such dexterity is nearly impossible to that same degree at a public university due to the additional GEs and distribution requirements. Other than maybe Brown, where you can literally design your own majors, I cannot think of another university with so many potential options. I think it may still be true that USC offers more majors and more minors than any other private university. Plus, they have literally 100s of student organizations. In many ways, if you attend USC and leave dissatisfied four years later, you really only have yourself to blame. It is a gateway to a world of opportunities.

We were fortunate to have that experience for our family. Here’s hoping the same for all of you active on this thread.

@rg081602 I’m not really sure about Biology, but Political Science should not be more competitive than the overall USC average. Good luck.

@bibiabiyeye The emails are often delayed. Applicants usually learn via the portal first.

@Kaii2451 Generally, Dornsife is less competitive than the university overall. But lets face it… a differential from say 11% to 12-14% is still highly competitive. Not sure about those specific majors. Good luck.

does everyone have the option to submit the final transcripts under the upload materials on the bottom on the drop down menu?

@collegeappacc I do!
