USC Class of 2027 — Regular & Early Action Decisions

Very curious about merit announcement - they have always come around end of January (except when delayed cause of covid) - the mention of them coming mid Feb seems off as they have to get the merit interviews/explore USC rolling. A school is like a machine and delaying merit notification would seem to cause havoc to the scheduling of that, then visit days, then orientation, etc. if one train leaves late, they all leave late but maybe they have a couple weeks of float to play with but not sure how. New ballgame this year, we will see if they push those out.

Hoping they come with the EA, not separate weeks later, but they are in charge!

How about the Non-Governmental Organizations and Social Change (BA) major?

Yeah for sure, lots of people are getting interested in environmental science nowadays. I’ve been seeing an uptick in conservation/green-themed social media nonprofits too

Oh well, RIP chances at my other RD schools. The great news is that I applied as a cognitive science major as my primary major (thanks dad). But I really don’t think cog sci is any easier as well.

How did you combine Cog sci and Envi sci? They seem to be vastly different, and rather disconnected fields to me

Also, the USC instagram said that decisions will be rolled out throughout the day on Friday.

yea

Very interesting. Congrats on the publication!
Also, applying to all T20s must have been a ton of work. I died applying to 8 of them LOL

It was a lot of caffeine (ironic lol) and work.

Apparantly USC EA has a 4.4% acceptance rate this year, so at this point I’m good with whatever decision now!

People are misreading filling 20-25% of class as acceptance rate

I thought it was around 6%?

Something around that lol, still 6% is unexpectedly high. Not expecting people from my school to get in, but could be surprised

Oh shoot, we applied mostly English and env studies as first and second major, sometimes the order switched, hopefully they will look at English more. I didn’t know it would be this popular, will they consider second major at all?

@Twins2023
Are you referring to this on the USC web site:
If I am admitted Early Action (EA) will I also receive a merit scholarship?
Not all early admits will be selected to continue in USC’s merit scholarship process. Students who are selected as scholarship finalists will be notified of their next steps in February after receiving their admission decision.

Where did they say that? I wasn’t able to find it…

Thanks for finding that @voda2013-I bet that is what someone was referencing when they said merit mid-February.

“Notified of Next steps” is just signing up for Explore USC and setting up interviews, NOT the notification of them.

That leaves me to believe merit will be out as planned. We will know tomorrow!

The internet is a funny place lol.

Yes, I do not see that either @primitive_caffeine

What discouraging news. It’s good to have the information in hand to soften the blow when the news comes, but their program is the absolute perfect match for my son, so he’s going to be so sad.

It was on the stories Q and A yesterday, should still be available. USC admissions insta.

Here’s the relevant text from the admissions update email to counselors, including an update on the merit situation:

1. Early Action First-Year Application Numbers

We received approximately 40,600 applications for Early Action admission and merit scholarship consideration. On Friday, January 20, we will electronically release our EA decisions via the students’ USC applicant portal. We will offer admission to approximately 2,400 students. All remaining students will be deferred to Regular Decision. An additional 40,400 students applied for the Regular Decision deadline last weekend. Our plan is to release another 5,500 first-year admission offers of fall admission, or about 70% of the total, in late March.

The deferral notification will include instructions on what students should (and should not) do next. Students who wish to be considered in Regular Decision can submit an Early Action Deferral form in their portal. We also remind students to submit mid-year grades if they have not already done so. These are the only things students need to do to continue being considered for admission. To ensure equity in the process, we will not consider any new materials (resumes, essays, updates), and we specifically ask students not to request additional recommendations or submit letters of continued interest. Please invite your students to submit the EA Deferral form only, and feel free to assure them they will receive full consideration.

2. Merit Scholarship Process

Our merit scholarship program is a bit complicated. We considered EA applicants for merit scholarships. The deferral notification also informs students that they will not be moving forward in the competition for our Trustee, Presidential, Deans, and Leadership scholarship funding (see the exception below for National Merit).

In early February, we will release additional information about merit scholarships to EA admitted students.

  • Roughly 900 students will be invited to proceed to the next phase of consideration for our top awards: the Trustee and Presidential (full- and half-tuition) scholarships. Their next step is to schedule their scholarship interview via their applicant portal. After interviews, final scholarship decisions will be released in late March.
  • 200 students will be notified of the receipt of a smaller scholarship like our Deans Scholarship and Leadership Scholarship.
  • All other admitted students will be notified that they are no longer being considered for the above mentioned awards. Students can still apply for other scholarships found on our Scholarships page.
  • Any applicant who is named a National Merit Finalist, offered admission and selects USC as their first-choice institution, will receive a USC Presidential Scholarship worth one-half tuition. This cannot be stacked with other merit scholarships awarded by the Office of Admission.
  • Scholarship decisions are final and not subject to appeal.

3. Portfolio Based Programs

Students who applied for a program that required a portfolio or audition, which are RD-only programs, will be notified by their academic area of interest regarding next steps in the process and merit scholarships. Decisions on admission and merit scholarships for these programs will be sent in late March.

I feel the same. If someone sat my son down to interview him in order to create the perfect program for him, this would be it. I know tomorrow will be a deferral for sure, but i still feel so anxious which makes no sense! Like the line in Dumb and Dumber - So you’re saying I have a chance…LOL. I am sure they will slice the very top off and accept those tomorrow. My son is an amazing and well qualified kid but definitely won’t be in that in that top sliver.
