USC Class of 2028 — Regular & Early Action Decisions

Does this mean that Thornton School of Music applicants are not eligible for these big scholarships since they can’t apply EA due to auditions?

You can apply " scholarship universe for usc "
There are so many available scholarships, if you are not eligible financial aid. Also i guess apply by December 1 is available for music scholarship.

Thorton students are eligible to be considered for university scholarships as long as they apply December 1st deadline.

So it says on the portal now that decisions are out Friday for EA and that the applicants will either be accepted or deferred - but no denials as of yet. That being said, I assume it becomes more difficult to be accepted in the regular decision round if being deferred?

Where does it say on the portal? Can you show a screenshot? I am not seeing this in the portal? Thx

Last year was the first year of EA.
They accepted 2,467 EA.
They accepted 2,043 who applied EA and were deferred to RD.
And they accepted 3,584 who applied RD.
So, you can see that being deferred does not make it more difficult to be accepted RD.

No, the process at USC is not like EA at other schools. Being deferred is not a soft rejection.

USC has always admitted candidates for merit scholarships early. They didn’t start calling it EA until last year. The vast majority of acceptances, and any and all rejections, will happen in March. USC does not waitlist applicants.

I think someone already pointed out COA at USC is almost $90K. Without scholarships, most families making 150-250k/yr will likely not be able to afford this.

Hi there! We didn’t see that on the portal either, but I just found it on the website as a window that popped up. It was under undergraduate admissions.

If anyone’s fast portal says " action require " yet ? Though you returned required documents, except fafsa and css profile. Not green , Not orange but red arrow. We have this continuously from December

Again, I would wait it out. Every year there are people who share info such as the following.

I ran the net price calculator for 150,000 and 250,000 with modest savings and both resulted in financial aid (more than 50% of the cost for the $150,000 salary).

Plugging my numbers I got 84k as my contribution. In pre-tax dollars that’s 120k. I should just quit my job.

But just for someone with 150k salary, 1/2 the cost is still 45k, and in pretax dollars that’s over 60k. Or another way to think about this, 150k/yr after tax net a take home pay of about 100-110k. If 45k of that goes to USC, the family will need to live on 65k or about $5000 a month to cover all expenses.

Anyone have knowledge on how parent job loss factors into the equation? Our 2022 tax returns and assets would mean $0 financial aid, but when a job loss hits I would assume there would be some type of reevaluation even if both parents work. We have assets to stay afloat, but not to reasonably take on a full $90k COA without significant stress.

not until the next FAFSA cycle. Unless you go to FA and plead your case.

Could you possibly go into more detail about this?

I ran the NPC and USC was always the lowest for us and we are not rich at all; our combined income is $185,000, we have about $500k mortgage on a house we bought for $638k (in 2020), we have a very small 529 plan (worth just under $20k), our only investments are locked up in 457/401k, and a pension. We
never seem to have much in savings and each time I have ran that NPC it says our yearly contribution is $60k….we can’t afford $60k a year for tuition/room and board.

Now of course my kid has to be admitted but it almost makes it sound impossible to afford.

Stanford, Princeton, and Harvard (none of which my kid applied to) gave the most per the NPC making those cost the same as a UC.

Did you mean to say that’s a lot money out of your pocket. Or “nothing” as in that’s pocket change and you can find that in your couch cushions? Just wondering.

I meant that the NPC said we would have to contribute $60k each year and we couldn’t afford that. The offer imho is not nearly enough to make it affordable. The offer is next to nothing….does that make sense?
