Affirmative action has been banned for California public universities only. Private universities were allowed to consider race until last summer with the SCOTUS ruling. Also USC is truly test optional. Per its CDS, approximately 50% of enrolled students have submitted test scores.
Reminder that discussions of race in admission are only permitted in the political forum. Also, replies to flagged and hidden posts are also hidden/deleted.
Did everyone including deffered students get an email from “admitusc” about alumni scholarships?
I got it and I applied RD
Received. Deferred.
My son received it and he was deferred.
Yes we got it too. Any idea why scholarship info being send without admittance? My daughter was deferred .
Yes my D24 EA is defferred and just earlier received email from admitusc for alumni scholarships
SATs are not correlated with income. And, I’m sure you know correlation does not mean causation. That theory has been debunked many times. High performing, low income students are being overlooked because schools have eliminated SATs and live in the wrong zip code. MIT is bringing them back because they believe it can help ID talented individuals.
The UCs are employing different techniques to hit their numbers, but they still ask the question.
I’ll add. The focus of this thread is USC. Let’s keep discussions focused on USC. There are plenty of other active threads covering other topics, like SAT and its future role, as one example
Yep, received and, as I have said, he hasn’t gotten any USC mail since 11/30, not even a decision email. So, I don’t know what it’s about, but I am glad he finally got something!
My daughter was accepted EA and received the scholarship email today as well.
Decisions were posted on the portal. We didnt get an email. We had to check the portal. There is a alink that says your admission status has been updated…
Yes, thank you. We checked his portal on Friday so we are all good. Some people seem to have received a decision email.
Yes. My son did. Any idea how many people they interview?
Sounds right. My D23 is a spring admit and was told at USC’s convocation a few weeks back that there are @ 450 freshman Spring admits that were starting.
Hello, I had a question about spring admits. How do you put you are interested if you do not get in RD? How do they select the spring admits? TY
That was a typo – 1580
Apparently I was logged out from the CC upgrade, so I wasn’t getting any notifications and I just thought the thread was pretty inactive till I opened it up! Apparently I missed some things. So anyway - the info below addresses some questions I just scanned. And in particular for @WWWard (HEY THERE!) - who is a master at math and statistics he gets from this data!
- Early Action First-Year Application Numbers
We received approximately 41,000 applications for Early Action admission and merit scholarship consideration. On Friday, January 19, we will release our EA decisions via the students’ USC applicant portal. We will offer admission to approximately 2,950 students. All remaining students will be invited to defer to Regular Decision. An additional 40,800 students applied by our Regular Decision deadlines. I expect we will admit another 4,600 first-years for fall, or about 60% of the total, in late March.
The deferral letter includes instructions on what students should and should not do next. Students who wish to be considered in Regular Decision must submit an Early Action Deferral form in their portal. We also remind students to submit mid-year grades if they have not already done so. That’s it-- these are the only two things students need to do to be considered for admission in the RD round.
To ensure equity, we will not consider new materials, such as resumes, essays, updates. We specifically ask students not to request additional recommendations or submit letters of continued interest. Feel free to encourage your students to submit the EA Deferral form only and assure them they will receive full consideration by completing this simple task. The application your students worked hard to submit will still represent them well in the next round.
- Merit Scholarship Process
We considered EA applicants for merit scholarships. Unfortunately, those we ask to defer are also notified they will not move forward in the competition for the Trustee (full tuition), Presidential (half tuition), and Leadership ($10,000 per year) scholarships (see the exception below for National Merit).
On January 30, the 2,950 admitted students will receive one of three updates about their scholarship status.
Roughly 800 students will proceed to the next phase of consideration for the Trustee and Presidential Scholarships, our top awards. Their next step will be to schedule their scholarship interview via their applicant portal. After interviews, final scholarship decisions will be released in late March.
200 students will be notified of the receipt of a smaller scholarship, such as our Deans Scholarship (quarter tuition) and Leadership Scholarship ($10,000 per year).
The remaining admitted students will be notified that they are no longer being considered for the above-mentioned awards. Students can still be considered for other scholarships found on our Scholarships page.
Any applicant who is named a National Merit Finalist, offered admission, and selects USC as their first-choice institution, will receive a USC Presidential Scholarship.
- Portfolio Based Programs
Students who applied for a program that required a portfolio or audition – which are RD-only programs – will be notified by their academic area of interest regarding next steps in the process for admission and merit scholarships. Decisions on admission and merit scholarships for these programs will be sent in late March.
- Need-Based Financial Aid
We require the FAFSA and CSS Profile for need-based financial aid consideration. Our Early Action deadline for these documents was January 12, but we know there have been challenges with the release of the redesigned FAFSA. We are encouraging students to do their best to submit as soon as possible. Students will not be penalized and will receive full consideration. We will continue to review applications received after the deadline. The Regular Decision financial aid filing date is February 7.
How is she liking it so far? What did she do first semester?
