My daughter loved her TO classes. Lots of reading and writing which she loves. TO really gave her a liberal arts experience within the wider university. She took some cool classes like a class on Disneyland where they took a field trip there. And a class on trash-think celebrities. One class went to see a play in LA. This was all pre-covid but hopefully they’re back to field trips.
Curious if others have gotten financial info yet? Website says they are sent within 7 business days of the admissions decisions.
We have not.
we got an update with the presidential scholarhsip filled in. nothing else.
Is this after you selected USC as the #1 choice on the National Merit website?
yes. D24 had made that choice a while ago
I would expect good amount of FA to come out end of this week and beginning of next week.
Thanks @CADREAMIN – we are flying across the country to go to admitted student day on sunday, so I was hoping to have the info before then. But then again, I think I have the info: please send us 86k. :).
Is it possible to put USC as #1 choice on the national merit form and not accept USC admission until later after we visit?
From his list of schools, USC is the only school that offers any national merit scholarships.
Yes, you can list it as number one and change it at any time.
Are there any other schools you are considering that offer NM scholarships? If the other schools don’t, it doesn’t matter if you list USC as number one and go somewhere else.
Of the list of schools he is considering, USC is the only one that offers a NM scholarship.
He’s going to visit his top choices the next 2 weeks and hopefully make a decision after that. I remembered someone mentioning that it takes a few weeks after declaring with NM for USC to see it and the scholarship to show on his portal.
Trying to time it with housing if he does decide to go to USC.
Yes, this is the post that you probably read.
my D24 has been admitted for CS into the Viterbi school. She is also interested in minoring in Business. How easy/hard is that since the schools are different? Any tips/information here?
Congratulations on the admission. I’d suggest to start with the information below:

In general, CS is a “big” major already. Adding on a business minor would be still doable, if your student comes in with enough/right AP credits to waive out of GE or major prerequisite requirements. If not many AP credits, it’s still possible but she may need to overload certain semester(s).
The process is straight forward for a minor in Marshall - just an application process with minimum GPA requirement. There are actually quite a few Marshall minors to select from:

EDIT: Adding on a business “minor”, not major
Minors are easy to declare at USC. Students declare minors at different schools all the time. Marshall Minors | USC Marshall
Is it really true that switching majors are easy to do? Are there any majors that aren’t really doable? I assume some of the arts which required auditions?
For example, can anyone switch to the Lovine and Young Academy?
I would say switching to LYA is certainly difficult, but not impossible. They are looking for a very niche student and have very few students. It will take a year to get in, then typically it’s still a 4 year program. So there’s that.
In terms of other schools,
Viterbi CS is closed for switching at this time (this is new). Marshall is competitive and always has been to internally transfer, but there is a process. SCA/Thornton performance majors obviously restricted, but there are majors in SCA that one can move into. Easiest to move around and into is Dornsife majors.
Mine did a double major with CS being one of them, and one major in another school. Always took at least 18 then did 21 credits at least two semesters and did one or two summers (with 4 in college things sorta blur after awhile). Another did a double from two different schools and did summers, Maymesters and ended up staying an additional year (but that was also cause of covid and wanting to be back on campus so had taken a couple very light semesters then on purpose).
Point is, what students don’t realize going in, is the time, credits, and expense to complete 2 majors from different schools. It’s a lot. Another year is another 90k these days, and just this year they took away the programs that would allow extra credits up to 21 for free, for students above a certain gpa (anyone could get it not just scholarship students).
But minors, while still demanding (if in another school there’s still a good amount of additional credits) can be great. If interested start planning your core curriculum so credits there get “double bonus points” - satisfying requirements in both major and minor.
Not everyone can switch to any major. Some majors have a minimum GPA requirement but if you meet it, then you should be able to transfer. Also talent based majors often require essays and a portfolio or audition to change. There are a handful of majors that only take freshmen but overall, changing majors at USC is not difficult especially if within Dornsife.
USC reinstated Academic Achievement Award so students with 3.75 GPA will still be allowed to take up to 21 units without additional fees. USC reinstates Academic Achievement Award, Exceptional Funding - Daily Trojan
Have people received their financial aid offers yet? I’ve sent my FAFSA and my CSS a while before deadlines and haven’t received any requests for documents.
