[
] Other schools applied to: None!!
[*] Comments: The night before my acceptance, I got an email asking me to submit super specific financial aid forms that they’ve never asked for before, so chances are if you get the same request, it’s a good sign. Don’t give up because if someone like me with a mediocre application and at least 2 typos in their essays can get in, you can too!!

Stats:

[ul]
[] College transferring from: Diablo Valley College and Las Positas College
[
] Entering as: Junior
[] GPA: 3.91
[
] Units completed: 47 (excluded AP credits)
[] Units in progress: 11
[
] Pre-reqs completed: All - Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting (In Progress), Microecon, Macroecon, Intro to Business, Business Calculus 1, Business Calculus 2 (In Progress)
[] GEs completed: All except for 1 or 2
[/ul]Subjective:

[ul]
[
] ECs listed on app: Most were from high school. Varsity Track & Field all throughout high school, multiple editorial positions for high school newspaper, public relations officer for community service club (high school), seasonal Human Resources department intern (high school), part-time job (high school), Cross Country (high school), community service in general (high school), 1 part-time job (college), English tutoring (college)
[] Job/Work Experience: Honestly not much. I did a very short internship with the Human Resources Department at a Socal company my junior year of high school. I worked as a cashier for a year in high school and worked as a sales associate for a beauty/skincare store while attending CC.
[
] Essays (subject and responses): I did my entire application the day it was due (Feb 1st), and I didn’t think my essays sounded that great. I reread them back in March and found them alright. My common app personal essay was about how I struggled with trying to pay for a private school as a freshman and dealing with depression and how those two factors led to my decision to stay at a community college. I then discussed how CC allowed me to discover different career pathways/majors and what I did throughout my two years to pursue my new interests. In the prompt essay (something outside of academic focus one), I wrote about how I hope to re spark my interests in computer science because I had gotten into that and graphic designing years ago. I wrote about how my ‘PR experience’ in high school clubs is why I’m primarily interested in marketing and what activities on campus I hope to enter.
[] Letters of Recommendation: None. I would have gotten one from my counselor who I have worked a lot with and know would have written me a great letter, but I did my application really late and didn’t want to put him under any pressure.
[/ul][ b]Other:**

[list]
[
] Other schools applied to: UCLA (Communication Studies, accepted), UCB (Business Admin, rejected), UCI (Business Admin, rejected), UCSD (Communication Studies, accepted), UCSB (Communication, accepted), Santa Clara University (Business Admin, pending).
[li] Comments/Tips: Don’t be like me and wait until the day the application is due to start it (although I’m sure 99% of applicants are not dumb enough to do that). Go beyond the minimum recommended courses. If you’re a Marshall applicant, try to complete as many business courses as possible, while supplementing those with your GEs and other relatable classes. I had a lot of Communication Studies courses (all the ones required for transfer to UCLA’s Comm program) and Business courses, and I explained in my essays why I had both - because I hope to enter marketing, which incorporates both. Explain any Ws in the additional comments as well. It won’t hurt, no matter what the reason is (my W for Financial accounting in the summer was because I had too many work hours and realized I couldn’t handle both).[/li]
Now comes the hard part…choosing between UCLA and USC. Congrats to all you admits and good luck to those looking into applying! Feel free me to message me if you have any questions!

[ul]
[
] ECs listed on app: Student government, community theater
[] Job/Work Experience: All education related, substitute teacher, program coordinator, curriculum writing
[
] Essays (subject and responses): My common app essay was about how I don’t let my academics or any of my achievements define me, but I want my personal qualities to define me. Basically I said judge me how I treat people around me not by my academic achievement, which at the time I thought was super risky. My common app “why are you transferring essay” was basically me laying out how indecisive I am to the point where I attended a CC instead of a four year out of indecision. USC essay was about how my CC courses are relevant to the Price school since my CC had no relevant major to urban planning.
[] Letters of Recommendation: None
[/ul]Other: I listed my dream job was to be the Personal Assistant to Ariana Grande LOL I forgot about that

] Comments: idk how dude. I honestly wish I applied more places and had the confidence to do so, not to say getting into USC isn’t amazing because it obviously is incredible. I thought USC was a shot in the dark and there was no chance. When I was writing my essays and answer their short answer questions, I was just writing as myself. I was not writing to appeal to the admissions staff. If I have any piece of advice, it’s to write what you really think and show USC who you are.

Accepted - Price School, Urban Studies and Planning

Applied: November, 2016

[
] Essays (subject and responses): USC essay was about how my CC courses relate to the Price School since my CC had no relevant course of study to Urban Planning. Common app “why are you transferring” essay was basically me talking about how indecisive I am and why I went to a CC instead of a four year. The other Common app “personal essay” was me talking about how I want to be judged by how I treat people rather than by my academics.

[
] Other schools applied to: Umass (accepted) UC Davis (wait listed)
[*] Comments: BE YOURSELF. In the “dream job” short answer question I put “Personal Assistant to Ariana Grande.” I did not write what I thought the admissions staff wanted to hear in any case at all, I only wrote exactly what I thought. So amazed that I got in to USC. I already put in a deposit for my state school so I have a huge decision to make.

[
] Letters of Recommendation: 1 from Pulmonologist Doctor, who is my employer, and 1 from my Java professor

[] Other schools applied to: Accepted only to UCI/UCSB
[
] Comments: I’m surprised I got my admission so early. Although my GPA is just a little above the supposed average GPA, most of my B’s were in GE courses not related to my major (Archaeology, Theater Arts History…). I received A’s in Calc 2/3, and taking Linear Algebra currently. I would say that your essays and Letter of Recs can be very beneficial if they are related to the major you are applying to.

^ I used the above person’s format - thank you!

[] Essays (subject and responses): In my why transfer essay, I wrote why I want to receive a higher education. I decided not to enroll in University of Washington last year because of the unexpected out-of-state cost (I am a Washington State resident but I had to pay out-state tuition because my parents lived in Japan). I showed tenacity for education and the desire to learn, and I connected this feeling to the time when I first decided to move to the United States for curiosity and the desire to learn when I was 16 years old. Comments: I thought I would be at disadvantage for taking a gap year, so I’m glad to be accepted. I think trying to be authentic as possible and showing the desire for learning helped me with the admission decision.

Comments: don’t lose hope!! I was in a super low place after hearing back from ALL the schools above, thinking I was just a weak candidate all around… but then USC took me! anyways, as an SCA applicant, i’m pretty sure they weigh our essays, Slideroom supplements and rec letters WAY more than grades, GPA and SAT/ACT scores… so if you’re worried about the latter, don’t be! you have a really, really fair shot if film/writing/etc. is your passion and you have good stories to tell!

[] Letters of Recommendation: I submitted one, but I never got a chance to read it. I’m assuming my professor said nice things?

[*] Comments: I worried most about my GE’s because I wasn’t sure if they would accept the (kind of random) classes I took as GE credit. I was also concerned that I had only taken one semester of writing (when the prereq is two). My counselor told me there is wiggle room for 4-year students because many colleges (like mine) only offer a semester-long course for writing. I also was a bit worried because I took Algebra II in high school and received a C+. I knew that was barely passing the prereq for math. Overall I’m still in shock!! Hopefully, financial aid pulls through and I can go to my dream school!! #FTFO
