Hello,
I’m having a bit of trouble writing my essay for the USC School of Theatre supplement for this reason:

The first supplementary essay asks to describe your academic interests and how you plan to pursue them at USC. The School of Theatre essay asks: What influenced your decision to major in Theatre? Why are you applying to the USC School of Theatre? What are your expectations from your college education? What are your professional goals and objectives? What extenuating circumstances (if any) may have affected your previous academic performance?

I am unsure of how to avoid redundancy between these two essays, because for the first essay, I’ll be writing about the School of Theatre, and for the second essay, I’ll be writing about the School of Theatre. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to work around this?

The first supplementary essay–is that one part of the regular application for admission? In other words, isn’t that the essay that all applicants must submit, no matter what major? If so, it is primarily read by the main USC adcom. The SoT supplement is read by the School of Theatre, of course, and you can probably use similar material for both. After all, they are both trying to learn about how you see yourself fitting in at the university and to your major. The School of Theatre essay is a bit more involved (more questions) and is actually more important (since the SoT has a lot to say about accepting their students) so you might just spend more time on that one and then use a shorter edited version with your regular app supplement.

Don’t worry about redundancy, in other words. Since most students applying to USC will not have separate supplements for their Schools/majors, it’s not usually an issue.
