Lightja, I’m guessing that this might be a global change for all applicants (or possibly ones applied before Dec1st) besides ones who have been accepted and ones who previously had a “forwarded” status. No one has posted anything saying their status has been “being reviewed” before and hasn’t changed to this “preliminary review completed” stage.

Personally, I’m more likely an ORM than URM so that’s probably not giving me any advantages…I’m an ESL students who have attended 5 different schools in the past 5 years though, so I don’t know if that gets factored into this at all. Also I’ve been consistently in touch with my local USC rep.

Like many of you guys, my status also changed to “We have completed a preliminary review of your application.” I think it means what the letter said: no scholarships but that we are still in the run…

Also, all of that experience is definitely a plus if you did well on your TOEFL, also there was someone who said it was changed, and then promptly changed back about 30 mins later, so there are some out there without the status update, not to mention, the people checking up on this thread are likely checking up on it because their status has been changed, otherwise it looks like we continue to discuss the “forwarded” status to someone who doesn’t realize status changes are happening.

If you got the letter and the status change einnob, that means the status probably doesn’t mean anything, other than maybe a possible second-wave acceptance.

Also, historically, students accepted in 2nd (and later) wave have also been offered scholarships, just not nearly as frequently. However, the scholarship applicant, as well as overall applicant pool took a significant jump this year from last, so it’s even more competitive for acceptance and scholarships especially, so it’s not practical to get our hopes up over this.

Is the preliminary review status on the USC connect website, mine still says forwarded for committee review as of last wed/thurs. I also didn’t receive the letter yet but maybe because I am from New York and may need to wait a couple more days.

cdr777, so as of now, there’s one difference between you and me, I also am from New York and haven’t received the letter, but my status is in the preliminary review.
College Confidential USC people! Let’s try to figure out what these statuses mean! I have 2080sat, 3.6 gpa, good EC/essay.

the mentor and cdr777, i have somewhat similiar stats, my SATI is a 2020 and GPA UW is 3.78. Plus Im in California and I received the letter yesterday and the “preliminary status” today, so you’ll probably get a letter soon.

thementor5 and cdr777, I’m from NYC too and I got my packet yesterday - I’m pretty sure they’re sending them out in batches, and I was lucky enough to get one in the earlier ones.
2180sat,3.5-3.7 gpa (depending on your scale… 89.8/100uw), good EC/essay/portfolio.

I don’t know if I’ll be accepted this early Arctic I never received the status update before last week and my stats aren’t crazy outstanding or anything. Hopefully that recent forwarded for committee review status is a good sign though.

All these changing status reports and letters are starting to scare me. I considered myself strong for USC but now I’m starting to question that :P

I dont know if this helps anyone but I got the “preliminary review” status change. I got my letter yesterday saying I wasn’t in the running for a scholarship(and a no to the BA/MD program today but that one was very expected :P). I live in Southern California. I’ve already filled out the midyear report form but haven’t sent out a hard copy yet. Stats- 2230 SAT, 33 ACT, 3.9uw/4.5w GPA

"But I really dont think that the letter means anything more than “no longer candidate for Presidential/Trustee Scholarship”. Like an update. "

Well I kinda hope it makes us somewhat special in the huge applicant pool…so I also prefer not to receive a letter ;P

Then of course, “being special” can go both ways…I’ll stop here.

Does anybody have this status? I don’t know which one sounds more “complete”, this or the “Preliminary review” one.

“We have completed an initial review of your application and would like to see the results of the first term of your senior year (final, not mid-term marks).”

yours is abit different from…hmm, most of ours =D
Not necessarily a bad sign though. In my opinion, initial review and preliminary review are essentially the same, aren’t they? and the fact that they are specifically asking for senior grades may imply that you are a borderline applicant whom they are pretty interested in. So your chances are still good, be optimistic =)

If you don’t mind me asking, what are your basic stats? figured it might turn out helpful for sorting our the patterns.

3.6 GPA
30 ACT
Strong Work Experience
Decent ECs
Pretty good Essay I think
Great Recs from teachers and counselor
I didn’t do extremely well last semester Junior year, so I am not really surprised about that status.

I’m not exactly sure how USC does things, but there were a few deferral letters that UMich sent out.

One was saying that basically just said you were deferred because they needed more time to compare you to all applicants.

The other asked for first term senior year grades, which basically meant that if they weren’t good, like all A’s with maybe a high B in a difficult class that isn’t part of your major, then your chances were very slim.

Your GPA is fairly weak, but your ACT score isn’t, so as far as the “bad” (which is completely subjective) “deferral” (it’s not really a deferral) goes, I’d say you’d be in good shape comparing you to average stats from past classes, so be optimistic and hope it goes well. Good luck to you.
