USC Status Update

Yikes, do we think it’s bad if they’re not asking for mid-year grades and didn’t even bother to send the no scholarship letter?

Lightja, assume USC system works the same way, say they expect your midterm grades to be “all A’s with maybe a high B in a difficult class that isn’t part of your major”, what do you think of B (wasn’t too high but it doesn’t really show) in AP Literature if I’m applying for Marshall?

thementor, cdr777, einnob, and I all have roughly the same stats!

I have a 30 ACT
and a 3.8UW/4.3W.

cdr777 and I are both on “forwarded”, and thementor, einnob and I all have received “The Letter.” thementor and einnob both have “preliminary view.”

Curious…

^ to make it more confusing, I haven’t received the letter yet. lol
btw, if we do all get in USC and go, we should meet up haha

I’m still sitting on “Your application has be forwarded for committee review” even though I already received the no scholarship letter. I guess the status updates aren’t a surefire way in determining your place in the admissions game.

@thementor, definitely! I can’t imagine going through a hardship like this with people I don’t know, succeeding, and then proceeding not to know these people!

Of course we’ll meet up if we end up there!

Unfortunately, since I didn’t get any scholarships, it’ll be hard for me to get there…

Only thing I can think of that may be different is that I am a minority (Half-Asian) don’t know if that matters. Any other ideas of what could lead to these different status updates between us, ECs? If it helps I play 2 sports (Football and Golf) but I don’t think I have anything else that is extremely unique.

greymatters, what are your stats?

I play the cello, but I barely wrote about that. Hmm.
I had some cool ECs, like I was on the bowling club team, went to girls’ state and summer musiccamp. I also have a solid work experience from Sophomore year on. Oh, and I was drum major of my marching band for 2 years. Other than that, I’m white, so there’s nothing unique there.

I thought my essay was pretty good. Moving, anyways. I talked about my autistic little brother and how much he influences me.

and ya thementor if we ever do receive letters it will be like a week after everyone else lol stupid snail mail.

I am Asian, though that’s hardly any kind of special. I don’t play any sports (at least not for school). My only outstanding ECs would be several science competitions and some volunteer work.

On a rather irrelevant (or not) note, I did get to meet the very admissions officer who reads the applications that come from my school.

Edited to include stats (most of which I don’t remember, took them very early during junior year):
SAT I- 2200+ (I don’t remember the exact scoring, but I wasn’t very happy with a 790 in math)
SAT II- 800 (Math II), 750+ (Chem)
GPA- W: 4.4
Rank- 9/600+

“I wanna be a minority” @ cdr777, I don’t think being half-asian is that special. I mean, if you were asian/native american, that’s something, but if it’s still majority-oriented, I doubt it makes a big difference.

My ECs are Wrestling, Debate, Jazz band, Rock band. summer debate institutes, 1 month internship.

p.s. i hope y’all got the green day reference.

I love that song, btw. Two major things in common. USC and GD. Hoorayyy.

@greymatters, I’ve met my admissions rep too. He was nice! Looked a little stressed, but nice.

OH. I had an interview at USC in October…

ya your right thementor I forgot to mention how one of my parents is Asian and the other is Jewish though so that’s kind of different, I talked a little about that in my essay. I may be wrong but I don’t think there are that many other Asian that are Jewish.

I also love green day lol any1 else like Blink-182 though?

I was very good about not freaking out on this stuff. That is, until I found out that some students at my school were already accepted and in contention for these scholarships. It made me worry a little.

The statuses also seem to be somewhat erratic, so my dependability on them is starting to wear off. The letter also served as a “stop checking your status so frequently.”

^yeah that is pretty unique, my friend is Korean and Jewish.

cdr777, thementor, oxojolo, what schools are you guys applying for? I think that is pretty important, some schools are more difficult to get into than others.

To try to add some perspective to the “status” obsession…

Every year everyone tries to decipher what “this status” or “that status” means. Other than at the very beginning and at the very end, they haven’t meant anything other than that USC is reading 35,000 applications.

To support the “global change” theory (and that the statuses don’t mean all that much), I just logged in to my Oasis account to check my status. It currently says my application “is being reviewed by the admissions committee.” Last week it said that it had been “acted on.” Both of which are interesting in that I applied in November 2007, was accepted in 2008 and am now finishing my sophomore year at USC…

I applied undecided to CLAS.

I’m applying undecided so I guess that’s CLAS what about einbob oxolojo and thementor.

Edit: That makes sense why we have the same status oxolojo and they don’t if we applied undecided and einbob and thementor may have applied for specific majors/schools.

I applied to Marshall. I thought it was hard until I read somewhere on this site that it was one of the easier schools.
