if all you care about is getting into USC then you might have a shot if you get straight A’s next semester and apply to a very unpopular major.

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if everyone can give me a hand, here.

Like everyone on this thread, I want to become a Trojan and enter into the school during the Fall of 2008, after getting my AA. My Major would likely be the Music Industry at the Thornton School Of Music. Currently, I am in my first year at a community college. This happens to be my first year back in school since being home-schooled for all of my Junior High School and High School years due to constant health problems. However, during high school, I did put up a GPA of 3.9. Basically, I have the following questions…

In counting GPA for college, do they count the + and -'s, as well? If so, my current GPA through my first semester of college is 3.4. If they don’t, then it’s 3.2, so I’m obviously hoping the former.

While schools like Marshall, etc. are obviously very competitive for admission, could the same be said for Thornton or would it be a bit easier to get accepted in?

As I was home-schooled and was physically unable to do most things, could this wind up hurting me in the awards, honors, activities sections? How much emphasis would go into this?

From looking at the USC Articulation sheet, I’ve noticed that it says that you can only take 4 out of the 6 GE requirements. Does this mean that if I managed to take all 6 GE before getting hopefully transfered that two of them wouldn’t count? Or am I misinterpreting this?

Finally, while letters of recommendations are optional, could attaching them anyways help sway the people who decide who gets in or not, or does it not make one bit of difference?

Thanks for everyone’s help, in advance. Hopefully I can join some of you at USC in 2008!

5 more days til move-in!!!

Matthew M., I suggest going to their website and looking at their brochure.

4 days left until move-in day!!!11

Fall 2006 was my first semester in community college. havent received all my grades yet but so far it looks like

anthro: A
english: A
French: C
History: C

Math: B? (most likely a B.)

A 3.0gpa for my 1st semester. In Spring 2007 i’m doing anything 5 classes.

Should I still apply to USC?

If I pull straight A’s in spring then my gpa goes to 3.5gpa

Isn’t 3.5 gpa for a transfer competitive? I would be entering as a sophmore into USC.

I also have some community service done, etc.

words? advice? tips? thanks.

intended major: Mainly Poli Sci… or Creative writing.

el rey, just pull straight A’s this coming semester and you should be fine.

2 days left until move-in. im starting to feel very nervous.

El Rey, those C’s will most likely get you out of contention if you apply for Fall 07. Even if you pull straight A’s in the Spring, your GPA will only be at 3.5, which isn’t that strong even for USC. IMO the best shot you have is to transfer as a junior, take some higher level french/english classes to show improvement on those Cs, and get the best GPA you can.

****ed off here.

Just got my grades. Turns out I wont be applying to usc for fall 2007.

fall2008 for me.

well, what classes do i take after ive done all the required classes usc needs for me to transfer in ?

as a poli sci major i only need poli sci 100.

im asking cause sophmore year in college, it seems that i wont have any nessecary classes to complete.

words?

I’m considering a transfer to USC as a junior. I’m wondering if you guys know, perhaps from personal experience, if it’s harder to make new friends as a transfer than as a freshman. Does USC offer any services, programs, clubs, etc. to help transfers meet new people and acquaint themselves? Also, can transfers live on campus?

went to orientation… it was awesome. the counselors really care about you. my counselor already reviewed my transcript before i went to oreintation and had a list of classes for me to take that would fufill my ge’s/requirements.

vonska - are you going to try to get into marshall? i am because econ wasn’t my first choice…

hobo, econ was my first choice. im not a business major. im moving in today. when are you moving in and where are you staying?

how much weight do the essays and short answers hold in admissions to USC…i am in the process of applying to Marshall…thanks ahead of time!!

xferstd… i would say the essays are crucial if you have a borderline gpa (3.5 - 3.6) My GPA wasn’t too hot but i worked very hard on my essays and i got in !

vonska, i’m moving in sunday, i got housing FRIDAY (i took over some guy’s contract) i’m staying in VISTA which is very far from school. i’m probably going to get a reassignment since i want something closer to campus prays for parkside

I am a prospective transfer student wanting to go to USC. I applied as a high school freshman but got rejected. I wanted to know if any you guys know some applicants that got rejected with a 3.6 GPA with their english and math requirement completed, some GEs completed and applied in the Letters of Arts and Sciences, not the competitive majors like Marshall and Annenberg.

Also do you think you can evaluate my chances:

GPA: 3.5 (first semester), 15 units fall semester
Major: Neuroscience
15 units this spring semester for a total of 30 units
fulfilled math, Cat. I, in process of fulfilling Cat. II,V, english requirement, and diversity course.
extensive ECs

dude that’s crazy. im living in honors house, which is right across from vista. i already moved in. to be honest with you, im not impressed at all. i expected so much more out of 'sc, taking into consideration the amount of tuition we pay. my room probably hasn’t been painted since the korean war and the furniture looks like its gonna fall apart at any given moment.

im beginning to miss my riverside days! ucr dorms were nice and clean. they didn’t have random shit stains on the walls. i don’t mean to be a little bitch, but im beginning to think that coming to 'sc was one of the worst decisions i’ve made.

dude… it’s just a dorm.
Your life’s not over yet.

In the future, for job or for bragging purpose, it’s a lot better to say that your a USC alumni than saying you are a UCR alumni. It has a better reputation, is more prestigious, and has a wonderful alumni networking. Also, USC has stronger pride, thanks to their amazing football.

It is more nationally and internationally recognized and will help you more in getting jobs and for whatever other reason. I’m not saying UCR is a total bogus school, but compared to USC, it is a few levels below.

Comparing USC with UCR is like comparing UCLA with San Diego State Univ; both good schools, but one is evidently more superior over other.

the good news is i got 518 $$ today by cancelling my health insurance. :)

little bit of extra drinking money eh vonska, lol.

Hey hobofromdowntown, I am Econ major and want to switch to Business. So what courses have you taken this semester?
