USC transfers.

London says: Thanx for the eval. problem is since I have done everything that the USC admission committee wishes for in a prospective transfer, I believe I will get admitted except that there are thousands of others like me (a lot with better stats). I hope my major makes me in shoe in.

All I know is that most people on this forum with great stats that got rejected either applied to Marshall or Annenberg, got a D in one of their classes, withdrew one of their classes, and most importantly did not finish the english requirement.

By the way, I called my USC counselor and said that once I send my spring grades they always request from sophomore applicants which would make a total of 30 semester units, they would base my decision on college record. My second major is either poli. sci or history- cant remember

whew. now, the wait.

let’s meet & greet. what’s your major and why USC? =]

what exactly is the english requirement ?

What are my chances ?

GPA : 3.71
1st choice major : music
2nd choice major : Econ

(since you guys cant judge my music talent, ill go off my chances on econ)

applying into sophmore

the bad :
Overall High-School GPA : 2.8
SAT : 1700

ExC : lots of music stuff

I took 16 units the 1st semester and im taking 16 units now. Ill have the econ pre reqs completed and the diversity requirement finished by the end of the 2nd semester. my essay and many of my short answers talk about a major impact in my life that made me take life more seriously, which explains why i did much better towards the end of my highschool career and doing better in college. i took a freshman college writing class at my university (all freshman are required to take it) but, there are no classes in the articulation history that fulfill the USC english requirement. All my classes transfer for elective credit at a minimum. my dad is also an alumnus of USC.

i can already tell that my admissions decision will be heavily weighted on my second semester (2 of the 3 prereq for econ are in my 2nd semester), so im wondering whats the minimum GPA i can have for the 2nd semester to still have a good chance of getting in. Thanks.

IIIII: Thats amazing, Music majors at USC are unbelievably tough

The only thing that might be a problem is your HS GPA. Since you are applying for a sophomore position, of course they are going to look at your grades. I don’t know the grading rubric of the new SAT so I have no referrent. Essays will probably be looked at heavily, so if they’re top notch…then.

BH07: I don’t think I will be admitted to Annenberg, so hopefully I’ll get in with English. Interesting info on this: “All I know is that most people on this forum with great stats that got rejected either applied to Marshall or Annenberg, got a D in one of their classes, withdrew one of their classes, and most importantly did not finish the english requirement.” Where did you hear that from? I have one withdraw, but I explained why in the application.

curioustrojan06: USC because it’s close to me, it has the courses I want, relatively good reputation on many levels, and it’s free. (Mom is an assistant professor at USC Keck School of Medicine, Geriatric Psychiatry, M.D.) It doesn’t really mean anything that I’m a dependent of an employee, doesn’t help my chances.

IIIII: since you’ll have above 30 units at the end of spring semester no need to worry about your high school record but be sure to send the transcript to make sure you had the minimum requirements (4 yrs. of english, 3 yrs. of math, 2 yrs. of foreign language, and all that good stuff). However, be sure to confirm with your admission counselor that the english class you took fulfills the english requirement or otherwise you will be in hot water. Since you have a 3.7 GPA, try to maintain or raise it up, I am pretty sure admission officers are not blind to your hard work. In case you do drop your GPA a significantly, explain a good reason why it dropped- it can mean the difference. BTW are you a out of state student, it might explain why your english class is not listed on the articulation.

london says: Actually I did not hear this, but I noticed this on this thread when I look at people applying for fall 2006. Look from pages 40-70 (a lot I know) and you’ll see how I made this statement. Keep in mind that there are about 10 people on this thread back then that got rejected, so there maybe more or less of these people (I am hoping less). I am not trying to scare to not applying to Annenberg but many of my friends ad counselors say Annie is tough nut to crack. You could transfer to Annie when you are admitted to USC, it’s much easier in internal transfer than many colleges I know of.

actually my writing class might transfer for credit. it has a (SYL) sign by it. “SYL: Subject credit (eg, GE) may be available, in addition to unit credit. Provide syllabus to Degree Progress for review.” does that mean they want me to give it to them if i get in or send it with my transcript ?

god I’m so jealous of my cousin.
His dad works at USC as a researcher/lecturer there, and just because of that all my cousin needs is a 3.5 GPA (SAT doesn’t matter) in his high school and he is guaranteed at USC FREE OF TUITION.

and here I am, working my ass off to get into USC.
Just because of this, I got to admire Trojan Legacy System. But it’s not fair…

curioustrojan06: usc because i grew up with it. my mom went, i used to live in socal, etc. it also has a strong neuroscience program - the school i’m at now doesn’t have one at all.

neat. i’m a business major w/ minor in art history, i think its pretty self explanatory why i’d pick usc for business. my uncle is an alumnus and i love southern california. =] its gonna be a while until we hear back from admissions…

bh07: so does that mean sophmore transfers that make it past the first review (hs and fall) automatically have the chance to submit spring grades? or that all sophomore transfers will get the opportunity to submit spring grades… and if they have more than 30 units complete, the focus is on college grades only?

sorry, i know the wording is awkward.

yeah, are they seriously going to make us wait til mid-summer? the people that posted last year didn’t hear back until the last week of orientation. i’m already nervous about hearing back… i can’t imagine waiting for another 6 or 7 months.

also, is anyone applying to a school that requires a decision and deposit before the usc notification date?

IIIII: Im in the same exact boat as you are. HS GPA of 2.9 and I’m applying for sophomore admission as a Bio major. 24 units completed before applying with 3.75GPA. I will have 16 on top by the end of spring. So I’m rooting for you brother! We can pull off the impossible!!

socal: While I was talking to the admission director he said that most if not all sophomore applicants get a grade request. For the 30 units, he said send in your fall grades and then when they send out the spring grades, send your grades quickly. This assuming that your units total up to 30 units if you want your college record as the deciding factor (15 in fall, 15 in spring=30 total). You still need to send your high school transcript to see you graduated and finished the basic math (Algebra 2 or higher) if you did not do it in college

If your second semester has the english or basic math req. in progress then the admissions decision will wait until you send your spring grades.

I know the waiting process is a pain in the ass. I heard University of Wisconsin notifies in 6 weeks or less (now thats quick).

Watch some Family Guy or 24 or do something good. It keeps my mind off from this wait.

CuriousTrojan06 says: matthew m.: yeah theres a section in the transfer brochure that says only courses that transfer! hope it works out for you =]

Thanks, CT06! I’m afraid that it means that I lost one A on my report card because of it, which brought my GPA down, but I still have a little while to go to raise it to a great level. Thanks for the help!

IIII: If you don’t mind me asking, what aspect of music are you majoring in? I hope to get transferred to USC as a Music Industry major (B.S.). Does anyone know how competitive Thornton is and/or whether certain areas of it are more competitive than others? Thanks!

If I’m not mistaken, but I think USC has one of the top music/cinema department in US. I don’t think it’s at all easy.

When will they send out final stats after we send in Spring Grades? Do we have enough time to sign up for housing and financial aid?

Application is in. I called because my official transcript was stalled but they said that as long as the main Part of the app. is in the subsequent materials will be accepted after Feb. 1st, phew.

Good luck everyone.

Last time I checked only 12 applicants got in this one major for music. Haha, what a bunch of crap. The guy from Phantom Planet got in.

Cinema Television School is basically impossible. I think your High School has a lot to do with it. Actually, I have no idea. In any case, there’s this guy I know that went to Loyola High School in California, I think he was number 32 in the class, and probably had awesome grades - anyway, he got in. It’s cool though, I don’t know If I want to get into film anymore.

HERE IS THE GREATEST STORY EVER:

This guy in my class has a friend, his mom is an animator/cartoonist. Anyway, she applied for a job at Disney and did NOT get the job. So, haha, she changed her name to a Jewish last name and GOT THE JOB! Pretty sad, and scary at the same time. A little discouraging. Bunch of bollocks…
