USC transfers.

IIII, don’t sweat it. You’re applying as sophomore so you have to send in your grades eventually. Better than getting an out right rejection letter. Still hope!

Hopefully they don’t ask for my grades because I applied with 25 units completed…

If you applied with 25 but are currently taking classes, they are going to definitely ask for your grades. If you have under 30 total by the time you would be attending, they will use mostly your high school transcript to asses your situation.

BUT I’ve stalked this board for quite some time and some people have gotten acceptance letters without even sending in their spring grades.

I’m going to have 38 by the end of the year.

Just wondering, you don’t need any letters of rec do you?

Nope.

Speaking of remedial courses, how much weight does USC put on that, if at all? I ask because in my transferable courses, (I’m at a CCC) I’m hoping to pull out a 4.0 this semester (which would give me near a 3.8 overall in transfer GPA), but I am trying to finish up my Math requirements, which are remedial courses. I don’t expect to pull out an A in that class - maybe a B or so. Because it is not transferable, would USC not care about that grade, as long as I passed, or would remedial grades also possibly be checked?

Also, while admissions is very much holistic and overall a crap shoot, what is usually a GPA that most transfers tend to be accepted at? If things go well, I hope to have around a little over a 3.8 when I transfer. LOL, I guess I am a paranoid person and I’m applying for next year!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Matthew M., I’m pretty USC doesn’t care about your remedial course grades as long as pass you them because they are not transferable. I would say your GPA is good but you never know with USC because Ive seen some people get rejected with some high gpas earlier in the pages of this post.

matthew m- a 3.8 GPA is pretty solid but the Math requirment is something that many say NEEDS to be done prior to admission at USC. I’m not gonna lie to you, Admissions will care if you don’t have this or the writing requirments finished. I remember last year there was a kid on here with a 3.7 GPA, 4.0 in the spring and was rejected because he didn’t have the writing requirment done. Did you take Alg 2 in HS with a C or better? because that would cover the math requirment.

The Average GPA last year for admitted transfers was 3.57 but you have to remember that the number is a little skewed since there are a ton of engineering trasnfers with low, or some times sub 3.0 GPA’s because of the ridiculous work load and tough classes they have to take. The SC rep at a college fair at my CCC told me that as long as I had a 3.5 I should be fine, but that was before they got a **** load of applications. But you’re right, admissions are very unpredictable. I know people who got rejected with 3.8-4.0, but I know one kid who go in from Colorado College with a 2.9 and another kid who got in from a CCC with a 3.1 a few years ago (his dad was a pretty high ranking FBI official, so that may have had something to do with it.) I’ve also heard stories of people getting into Marshall with a 3.2 GPA so yeah, it’s hard to gauge what they’re really looking for.

Thanks chocolategabanna.

Goldenjet: Yeah, I am in the midst of finishing up all of that. By the time I apply, I will have all of my writing and math requirements done, all of the GE’s knocked out (not counting the one’s that have to be taken at USC, of course) and all my prerequisites will be done (Music Industry Major, B.S.). To finish up the writing requirement, I’m taking a summer session. Hopefully by finishing literally everything possible, that will be a big help in admissions… at least as much as can be expected.

Wow… people getting rejected with a 3.8-4.0 that are transfers? Wow… now I’m even more paranoid! j/k But you are right, it seems that it is getting harder and harder to transfer into schools like USC. Hopefully our fortunes will be successful!

wow. what the hell kind of stats are competitive for marshall and econ?

I want to say around a 3.8-4.0 gap but plz correct me if im wrong.

Marshall is tough… probably at least 3.55 to be competitive. Prereqs weigh a lot more so just get straight A’s in the econ and cal classes.

I hate waiting. I wish they could just send my rejection letter already.

uhhhh how about a’s and b’s with a 3.7 lawl

FYI, the average admit gpa for Marshall last year was 3.78.

hey guys im interested in transferring into marshall and be at usc as a sophomore. i’ve mapped out my courses at my local cc and i’ll have all the prereq. done by the end of first semester except for macrocecon. is that a big problem? i also wanted to know examples of extracurriculars i could be involved in? (is there any truth that holding a business internship is a big factor?) i’m working already, and i’m afraid to get myself so many commitments where my gpa will suffer as a result. thanks for any responses. best of luck to everyone.

Fighton1 - getting an internship certianly won’t hurt and I would advise that you do it. I know USC doesn’t ask for letters of rec and if you send them, they don’t really matter much but a letter of rec from a person at a company could possibly sway them towards accepting you. As for your GPA hurting as a result of having a job, I held pretty much a full time job before I moved out to California last september and I was consistantly around a 3.6-3.7 until I decided to take 20 credits and got way in over my head and my GPA suffered because of that (well, it was really one class that brought it down, if i dropped it I would have had my normal 3.6 with 16 credits and working 32-38 hours a week and still.) Point being, know your limits.

Matthew M - yeah it’s getting harder to transfer into SC for sure. If I had the stats I have now when I applied last year I would have gotten in, now I’m not so sure that I will. I’m just hoping for a spring grade request at the least since I’m pulling a 4.0 this semester and will send along 2 letters of Rec with my spring grades, assuming I get the request.

goldenjet - i would go ahead and fax over a copy of your spring grades & your rec letters. they’ll consider any additional information you’d like to submit at this point, provided they haven’t already evaluated your application… but make sure to include a cover sheet & a professional, signed letter.

Socal? I’d love to, but my spring semester isnt over for another 3 weeks.

Also, do you have to send a cover sheet with everything?

goldenjet: thanks for the insight. any idea on how to go about getting internships or where to look? also good luck with the upcoming decisions.

Fight on 1 - Your current college would be able to help you out with this. Talk to professors and ask them questions since im sure they did their share of internships during their college days. Also, you can google a bunch of companies and take down phone numbers and call them until they’re blue in the face and decide to take you on as long as you stop calling ;)

And thanks for the GL wish, with how competitive admissions is looking this year, I’m gonna need it.
