UT Austin Class of 2025 — Regular Decision

Congratulations! Would you mind sharing the range a CBHP student usually get?

my daughter is OOS as well.

Good article from a Venture Capital CEO was published on CNN online last Sat. He says a lot of good things about the start-up/entrepreneurship opportunities across multi-disciplinary industries and fields of study along with access to intellectual resources/expertise in Austin. (He makes it sound like the start-up community is emerging in Austin when really Austin has been a hot location for start-ups for decades though.) It only reinforces the idea that there could be even greater cutting-edge internship and research opps for UT students.
Looks like I’m not allowed to post a link to the article. You can google search “CNN Business VC Jim Breyer” if you want to read it.

Anyone know about the Texas Excellence Award scholarship?

Yes I am OOS. What do you mean by range? Like how much was the scholarship?

Yes that’s what I meant.

OOS tuition waived, so I now pay the in-state tuition fees, and I also received a scholarship of an additional $6,000 per year

Apologies if this has been covered in-depth, but is on-campus housing not guaranteed for freshman? Are you supposed to fill out the housing application before you find out if you are admitted? And how remote are chances of getting housing if you haven’t submitted the housing application yet?

Congrats and thank you for sharing this information.

How did you get OOS waived?

That expense was covered as a part of my merit scholarship

That’s amazin- congrats!

Right-there’s not enough on-campus housing for all of the freshman class. It’s always been that way. It seems like some private dorms that are just across the street from campus have gained tons of popularity though - Callaway, Castilian, and Dobie. There might be others. They are considered dorms bc they offer full dorm-style meal plans and roommate matching. Based on comments, Callaway seems nicest but also the most expensive unless you qualify for SMART housing (low-income discount). Castilian and Dobie costs are comparable to some on-campus housing. Dobie is right on the corner of campus, close walking distance from the Jester dorm towers. It seems to get the worst reviews, but sometimes I feel a dorm is a dorm. Lots of students live there and tolerate it. You may be able to decline the “meal plan” at Dobie and opt to buy the on-campus meal plan and/or Dining Dollars-Bevo Bucks instead, so your child can eat with other students living in the campus dorms. There’s also lots of apartments to choose in west-campus and then you could buy the on-campus meal plan separately if you want. No idea if it’s too late to apply for on-campus dorms. Perhaps with Covid in-person classes’ uncertainty, more people waited to apply later this year than normal.

Thank you so much - that was extremely helpful!

My understanding is that for private dorms Dobie has really gone downhill the last few years. Most people pay a $50 non refundable housing deposit when they apply to UT for university housing since it’s not guaranteed but many do live in SRD or Hardin House (all girls), Callaway ie Castillian and then Dobie if they must. Many others also go directly to an apartment. Those who still want some amenities but not the price often go to Castilian. I tried to sell my longhorn on that but no dice. There were some not so great things but she liked it. This year huge savings living in a sorority and residency more than make up for the cost of callaway.

Thanks! Will check out Callaway.

We toured Dobie summer 2019, and while it doesn’t compare to Callaway, it was still a million times better than the dorm my son was in at UMich this year . It’s all relative! Dobie was awesome back in my day (I lived in Kinsolving), but it has been surpassed by the newer private dorms for sure.

A private/single room at Dobie with private bathroom is also about half the price of a shared room at Callaway. Nothing wrong with an 18 yo having concrete floors

I thought the concrete floors kind of had a ‘loft’ vibe. Kinda cool actually (although I would use a ton of rugs  )

Think it is the unreliable AC in Texas heat that causes more discontent.
