UT Business Honors Program Class of 2023

@CollegeParent123 I agree, I actually think this would be much easier on everyone if they just announced everyone on Feb 1 verses all the little waves. All of this speculation is stressful and just based on previous years so could be completely wrong. Clearly UT thinks there is a reason though because they have already let some kids in who haven’t heard from one of honors programs…at least not yet.

I see a lot of posts in different threads where people have gotten BHP interviews, or been admitted to McCombs. Unfortunately, my DD has received neither. She was auto-admit (top 4.5%), 1550 SAT, 4.28 GPA, 13 APs and excellent ECs. I guess UT thinks those credentials are not good enough for the Business program. Sad! We may have to seriously start thinking about backup schools now!

@ClarkKent007 don’t give up yet! Your daughters stats are within the acceptance range for McCombs for sure- very, very few kids have gotten in yet. I think business and BHP in particular are most impressed with class rank though and that is who they take first. I will say that stats are very impressive in a McCombs in general and BHP has an ACT average of 34, most kids are top 2%, and have an average of six leadership positions. Just a really tough pool! My daughter had what I considered amazing everything last year and didn’t get into BHP until the spring. Glad I am not applying now! So competitive!

@ClarkKent007 Hang in there! My child (non-auto,okay stats/resume) heard from Plan2 and we are still in shock while my other child did not hear until Feb 1 (amazing stats and resume). I talked with Cockrell, and they said they slow release engineering decisions randomly (in waves), with most coming out in Feb or March. I think Plan 2 and BHP drives a lot of the waves in the beginning, so you may hear soon or not until Feb 1 (and could be random release as well). You DD has great stats, so hang in there, the waiting is the worst part, and it is always a great idea to have a back-up! My oldest child got in UT and decided to go to back-up school because they offered STEM MBA and full ride (Alabama). We still have one in high school left, so not looking forward to going through this again, and I will say, I dislike UT’s admission process the most. Our oldest child also applied to Ivy, and their process was better than UT.

@ClarkKent007 It’s only November! If you look at a prior post of mine, at a recruiting event we went to in mid-October, they had already received 40,000 applications (and only read through 10k). Who knows how many more priority apps they received by November 1, and then the many more they will receive after that date. It is a long an arduous process and they are releasing decisions every week it seems.

My daughter has stellar stats as well, but we were told directly from people in BHP/McCombs, not to expect to hear anything until Feb. Thus if we hear sooner, it will be a pleasant surprise. The waiting is not fun, but it is what it is.

Since you’re an auto admit but just under the top 5%, your daughter probably should have a safety for McCombs. I know of a student with a 34 ACT that did not get into McCombs in the past due to the auto-admit rule. With IS your kid is in the auto-admit pool, so I think you need to be patient because McCombs is indeed so competitive and as others have said, they generally only take the top 2%. There are people that applied on August 1 that have not even heard yet!

And to everyone, we all think our kids have awesome extracurriculars, but sometimes we don’t really know, until we see/hear what everyone else has and we certainly don’t know what Texas sees. Every school has different offerings and opportunities. I’ve seen many threads that a kid highlights “I have 400 community service hours” as if that is going to get them into a school, while most kids these days have community service, and the kid has nothing else. They want to see well rounded kids. So while 400 hours of community service is amazing, what else does that person bring to the table to UT or anywhere else? There is a lot of info they provide in the applications - classes, grades, test scores, essays, letters of recs, resumes, etc. So it will be awhile for some of us. It sucks, but hopefully it is worth the wait!

Good luck to all!

Thanks folks for the show of support!
To be honest, we were shooting higher than UT, and are more than taken aback by where we stand currently with UT admissions. This obviously will require us to reset our expectations for all schools, and have secure backups, just in case!!
I understand that it is only November, but there is another thread where someone OOS with similar stats as my DD, who applied on Nov 6th, has received their BHP interview email. We applied on Oct 14th and are in-state, so feel like we have been passed over.

@ClarkKent007 Respectfully, it’s hard to shoot higher than BHP – it’s a program that is harder to get into than Wharton - though your frustration is understandable. Lots and lots of students with high stats apply to BHP – it is the intangibles (essays and resumes) that set candidates apart. BHP doesn’t abide by in-state and OOS ratios. It’s way too early in the process to draw conclusions about admission chances.

Lol @CollegeParent123, let’s not ‘frighten’ other people reading this thread, as getting into BHP is not like getting into Harvard. I love UT and I have one senior going to Texas and one already there (one at another school and one in high school), but it’s not the Ivy League or a T20 school, though many of the programs are ranked in the top 10 (including my kids’ majors). UT receives 51,000 applications, and about 18,000 gain acceptance, and that is a lot of applications to go through. Their admissions process is a mystery and seems very random, though BHP and P2 (and other honors programs with the exception of engineering) applicants drive some of the early waves because they have a separate process than the other schools at Texas. The admission process at Texas leaves much to be desired, and the waves are hurtful on the psyche and ego, but I truly believe a lot of it is random, so hang in there!

@CollegeParent123 where are you getting this information? As far as I know, Wharton is far more selective than BHP

@bobsmithpi314 scores in respective class profiles are same, yet admit rate is lower at BHP. BHP has 100% placement; Wharton 93%. Comparable recruiter lists targeting 100 BHP kids vs. 100’s elsewhere.

@grlgotexas UT Austin as a whole is not Ivy but BHP and Plan 2 are full of kids that the Ivies admitted . . It is so refreshing to have an admissions process like UT Austin (and other non-binding admission schools) where students are accepted irregardless of a guarantee of yield. And everyone will hear by Feb!!! Not many other competitive schools will promise that.

Take a look at the stats: just adding data to what bobsmithpi314. BHP is great (coming from a Texan), let us not put in the company of Wharton.
Here are some links: Wharton Acceptance rate - 7.1%

https://poetsandquantsforundergrads.com/school-profile/university-of-pennsylvania-the-wharton-school/

BHP admission rates: 244 admitted out of 1828 applicants - 13.35%

https://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/BHP/Admissions

In fact, Wharton is not the toughest according to P&Q stats – it is Cornell at 2.9%!!

@kg2013 What is there not to compare to Wharton? Other than the price of course and then the placement issue.

Wow – if perception is different than reality regarding BHP, then this $20M contribution (to benefit just 400 students) may really change perception: https://vimeo.com/303096097. Good luck to all applying!

Heads up… it looks like a few emails were sent late today with invites for interview for BHP. My daughter received one.

When did she apply?

My DD received her BHP interview email today. Relieved, as we had almost given up hope!

Does anyone get admitted to the BHP without a phone interview? My DS is OOS, high stats, 35 ACT, top grades, varsity athlete, head of many ECs and clubs. That said, I bet many BHP program applicants have similar profile.

@karen0 you can’t get into BHP without an interview. https://texadmissions.com/blog/ut-business-honors-class-of-2020-statistics-and-process outlines the process in which applicants are ultimately admitted to the program.

@ClarkKent007 Best luck on her interview. When did your daughter submit the application?
