@jivey23
I would contact UTSA. I have called them a few times and they are very helpful. UT San Antonio CAP Contacts:
Crystal Harris-Harlaux in Admissions @ 210-458-8000 - CRYSTAL.HARRIS-HARLAUX@UTSA.EDU
Sabina Kapoor in Academic Advising @ 210-458-5170 - SABINA.BHATTATHIRY-KAPOOR@UTSA.EDU
My daughter has also taken the majority of the curriculum through Dual Enrollment and AP but she was able to find 30 hours to take from the approved CAP course work.
Anyone having trouble registering for UTSA orientation? We tried last night and got an error message. We had the same problem all today. I called UTSA and they said that some students were getting this error message and to email orientation about the problem. I emailed them this morning, but no reply yet. I was told that this is a general glitch they are having and unrelated to DD CAP student status.
Took a couple emails and phone calls but UTSA got her registered for orientation. Every time she and I did it online, we got an error message.
We were able to register online last night without a problem. We are going June 24-25.
My DD will be at orientation June 10-11. Does it look to you like they all have to take the math placement exam in order to register for a Cap approved math course?
I’ve looked at this before and didn’t think my DD will need to take this test based on what I read in this link. Basically she has a high enough ACT/SAT to be exempt. That’s how I read it.
But we’ll still ask the counselor to be sure.
Mine is TSI exempt based on scores, but nothing terribly impressive. She is still deciding which math to take. Trying to figure out which would be easiest and still meet the Cap math requirement.
@lltjenkins Have you and your daughter done a campus visit at UTSA? I think we’re planning to do that on the 22nd and/or the 23rd. If you did, what are your thoughts, and you as well @txpublic . Thanks.
I have not been on a tour, but my daughter has been there many times. I asked her what to go see while you are on campus and she says “I’d highly recommend going through the student union, there’s a lot in there. That will lead to a long strip connecting multiple buildings including the library, humanities building, food places, etc.” And she says to go see the rec center, climbing wall, and visit the dorms.
@TXDad56 @txpublic We drove down there about a month ago and looked around but did not do an official tour. I was very impressed with the campus and area from what I saw!
We are planning to do the UTSA campus visit on March 29th, then spend time at UT-Austin with her brother and her friends there. I know they have a big UTSA Day on April 6th, but I think that’s more for those that see UTSA as their destination school. It certainly would be a better tour. Hopeful things go well. @lltjenkins do you still have availability in your dorm suite?
More info on who has to take the math placement exam, pasting from the UTSA website: “You should take a Math Placement Exam if you are TSI complete in Math and need to take a math course higher than College Algebra, as it is one way you can fulfill the prerequisites to enroll in Precalculus or Calculus.” There are some courses above college algebra that are not precal and calculus, so I wonder if the math placement exam is needed for those too. Maybe not, but I am uncertain.
@TXDad56 For sure the UTSA Day is very thorough and you can pick what things are of interest to you specifically instead of the standard tour. However, since you are further away it’s not as easy to attend and as you said, your daughter appears to be a strong candidate to make her CAP gpa and move on. I don’t know about my kid, frankly. I would like to say the 3.2 gpa should be easy enough, but she has to spend less time socializing, not join tons of activities, and not play tons of club sports. These were all pitfalls in her high school career. Namely playing multiple varsity sports 24/7. Since she is a social butterfly it is hard for me to imagine her curtailing those things. So for us it may be more of a gamble and my DD may indeed end up being a permanent resident at UTSA. I hope not, but time will tell.
@txpublic as I read the TSI Exemption, if you have SAT/ACT scores in Math above a certain threshold 530/19, then they are exempt from the TSI Test. For UT CAP, the student must take a math course higher than Algebra, so like PreCAL, CAL, Stats etc
@txpublic my DD is also very social and fixated on Soccer. Does you DD play soccer? If we head down on 3/29 would you both be available around 4-5PM ? Might be nice for the girls to meet. If so, I’ll PM you thru this system.
@TXDad56 That would be lovely! Yes, we should be available then but I will need to check with her. Mine did not play soccer, but she did basketball and track, and she has friends who played soccer.
I checked with DD and she is very happy to meet another CAP student and athlete.
I saw a post from a student on Reddit dated Feb 2019 who is making a groupme chat for incoming fall 2019-2020 CAP students going to UTSA. So that might be another way for CAP students to find eachother.
My DD is on the UTSA CAP group chat now. She says everyone is very nice.
Thank you for starting this thread. My daughter got capped at UT too and picked UTSA for freshman yr since it’s less than two hours from Austin. we toured recently and liked the school. Housing is wait listed at Alvarez and they emailed back for preferences. I’m so nervous! First child going to college and away from home! Yikes!
Feel like kicking myself for not doing the appeal. Looks like many kids got in.
