@austx9 my daughter is also doing UTSA Cap and the UTSA cap kids are on a Groupme chat group. The info is on the UTSA Reddit page.
For @austx9 and other students trying to join the groupme for UTSA Cap students, my daughter tells me that you can add yourself. I don’t know how groupme works, however, she says they can search for UTSA CAP 2019-2020 (I guess on groupme?) and then they can add themselves to the list. It is for students not parents. If that doesn’t work they can google UTSA Reddit and if they scroll down far enough they should find the same information there about the groupme for UTSA CAP students.
Currently they have about seven incoming freshman cap students on it.
My daughter is the one who started the UTSA group me on Reddit. I’ll find out the details and post here as well.
Our son is trying to decide between A&M and CAP so we are going to the UTSA day this Saturday. I’ve asked him to join the Group Me, but will any others be there this Saturday and could we meet up? He wants Texas so bad and it’s just so such a big gamble to go CAP. Not grade wise but missing out on the 4 year experience. He wants to study Psychology so it’s a good fit for him. Would love to know if others are struggling with this?
@jivey23 We will not be there for the tour, but we live in San Antonio, so if he just wants to meet another CAP student while he is in town, or if you want to get together a group of CAP students, we could come to say hello. @lltjenkins tell your daughter thanks for getting the groupme going. For anyone with a daughter doing CAP, my daughter is still looking for a roommate. Currently, she is in Alvarez, Leadership & Service Hall and the connecting room to hers is empty. If possible, she would like to find another CAP student to room with. She loves sports and is extroverted.
@jivey23 Is that TAMU Full student or some other pathway, versus CAP at UTSA ?
@lltjenkins what is the link for the groupme?
Here is the info from my daughter who started the group on the GroupMe App The GroupMe name is “UTSA CAP GroupMe 2019-2020”…she has to share the direct link with whoever is wanting to join. The link expires after a few hours so she has to send an individual one to each person. The best way to join is for them to send her a DM (not a chat) on Reddit to mjenk19 and she can send them the link or they can send her their phone number and she can manually add them. @texas167, @txpublic, @jivey23
@jivey23 - My daughter is also a Psychology major. I think it’s a great route for kids in this major. I have a friend who’s daughter did CAP years ago and she said the CAP friends she made at UTSA are still some of her best friends to this day. They all ended up going to UT their sophomore year and already had a group of friends as if they were already there. My daughter is the only one from the Dallas area. Most of the kids in the CAP GroupMe seem to be from Austin and Houston.
@txpublic thank you. He joined the Group Me chat yesterday and is getting good information. We are looking forward to seeing UTSA and will be there. We’ll be there on the tour from 9-1 so if your daughter is available that would be great. I’ll have my son see if they can coordinate via Group Me.
@TXDad56 TAMU full student. He got in everywhere but the ONE he wanted of course. Denied appeal too so very hard to move on from this week.
@txpublic - Glad he found and joined the GroupMe! We will not be there on Saturday. She is going to orientation June 10-11. Feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions!
@jivey23 I hope your son has a great time on campus tomorrow! My daughter will not be able to go but she saw his post on Groupme and hopefully all these kids can meet up in the fall. @lltjenkins My daughter and your daughter have the same orientation dates so they will for sure see eachother then I bet.
@jivey23 How did the weekend go at UTSA?
It was a very nice surprise. Beautiful campus and he can really see himself there for 9 months. He’s even wearing his UTSA shirt to school. We visit TAMU Monday, but I think he’s decided to do CAP. : )
Same with mine! I believe mine said your son did join the GroupMe she started for the CAP students as well!
So happy to find this thread!! Hope y’all don’t mind my jumping on. My daughter will be UTSA CAP in the fall and I guess it goes w/o saying that this is due to her goal of getting to UT Austin. I am kind of underwhelmed (sorry, I am a bit of a Debbie Downer, but try to be hopeful!) right now with UTSA. We had gotten zero info for orientation, even though my daughter chose the earliest dates (maybe not such a good idea), based on advice from a high school counselor. This, in hopes of getting best classes/times. I had to face the realization that as Mom, emails will not be directed to me. Even my daughter had not received info until this past Thurs. We leave tomorrow for 2 day orientation on 6/4 & 6/5. At some point in time, I even emailed the school and they just said for her to go to ASAP and print the orientation packet. Not quite the welcome I expected. Then, to top it off, today (Sunday, one day prior to travel) she received an email Sabina, letting her know there is a separate CAP orientation, if she would like to participate. The problem is, there is an attached link with the date of the CAP orientation (which seems to be simultaneous) and there is no availability. Not very helpful. I had called ages ago to speak with CAP rep at the school about Math placement/testing info and had a horrible experience. A student answered the phone and proceeded to ask a person in the background every question I asked and relayed non answers back to me. The one bit of good advice I got from that March phone call was that we needed to sign up soon for housing. When we toured the school we only saw Alvarez bc I think we were in a hurry to get back and grab an excuse for school. My daughter also saw the Leadership thing when she signed on to select a dorm. Was that offered, or available for all incoming freshman? I regret that she did not sign on for that. Her first choice was Laurel, but I think it mentioned that there were more Upper class-men in that building, so she chose Chaparral. Now I am worried bc we chose a quad and no way to know if there will be a CAP among them. I would love for her to get to know some CAP kids. All this was done at a specific sign on time online, so I think we somehow missed any opportunity to room with CAP kids. It has been 17 years since my middle daughter went away to school. So I feel like I know nothing. Again, so grateful to find this thread. Excuse my longwindedness. My daughter is a fantastic kid, but I am a bit concerned. Just want all to go well on her first big experience away from home. I’ve been more than a little anxious and so far the school has not done much to calm my fears.
@WylieA Is your daughter on the UTSA CAP groupme chat group? If you look back onto the preceding pages of this thread you can see references to it. Last I asked my daughter about it, she said there were about 15 kids on it. Maybe @lltjenkins can tell you more about it as her daughter started that group. I am sure they will try to plan some ways to meet one another on campus when school starts. My daughter is rooming with another UTSA cap student in Alvarez. I was told that they do not assign you a CAP roommate, that you have to find your own and request each other. The Leadership & Service Hall in Alvarez is open to all freshman but you have to request it and they have to have spaces available. I think you were doing well to get your daughter a room in Chaparral. People seem to like it. She may not get a CAP roommate but if she lives in a quad I am sure she will still make friends. I agree the school could offer up more information. I’ve really had to hunt for what we need to know. We are in San Antonio. There are other kids from Austin, Dallas, and Houston doing CAP.
Thanks txpublic, I will let my daughter know about the chat! She has communicated some with one of her quad roommates. But I don’t think the girl is CAP. To be honest I was a little unsure how much we wanted to broadcast being CAP, but this thread has made me feel better. Sabina sent an email to my daughter on Sat. and she just read it today. Something about scheduling an advisor meeting, but the link attached shows no availabilty on the day she is there (6/4) and no option to choose 6/4 or any other day. I was pulling my hair out, asking my daughter to respond, knowing we will be there day after tomorrow for orientation. We toured Baylor, A&M and UTSA. She was an automatic acceptance for UofH. I really loved A&M and College Station. She said that was “not her vibe.” We have some family in Austin and she preferred UT, but then got capped. So I am actually amazed she was able to get into UTSA, simply bc of the limited CAP slots. Several of her friends tried and were not able to do it. So, I need to adjust to San Antonio. I love it, but never pictured her going to school there. We were pleasantly surprised on our visit though. Just not impressed with having to dig for info!!! I know it is time for me to let her take charge. Old habits die hard though! My eldest stayed home and did UofH. She did a lot of traveling (still does) and even nailed a summer abroad in Italy. The middle daughter currently lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. Another big traveler. She was my independent girl. Although initially she went to school in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Sam Walton school of business, of all things. Jumped into oil and gas right out of school and never slowed down. Now our youngest is interested in International Relations. Heaven help me.
@WylieA I hope your daughter has a great time at orientation and that there is some help available there for her questions and yours too. Please, please tell us how it all shakes out! My daughter is attending the second orientation. I don’t even know if she has gotten an invitation to schedule an advisor meeting but I think not. I also want a definitive answer about the math placement test. My daughter is TSI exempt based on scores. When she and I have called UTSA, they have told us that she can take MAT 1043 without taking a math placement test. But the course description says that you have to have satisfactory performance on a placement test as a prerequisite. So the information we are getting is contradictory. I am hoping the advising she gets at orientation can tell us for sure. I also told her not to sign up for any class that isn’t on the CAP approved course list. That’s great that your daughters have high goals for themselves, clearly up for any adventure! Sounds like your younger daughter will do well at UTSA. Although UTSA was not our intended destination either, I think that a lot of kids find it to be a fun, relaxed place and it is large enough to offer plenty of activities.
