UT Dallas On-Campus housing scarcity

UTD meals for 1 year $4200

Depends on which meal plan you pick

@Thinkerbelle Overall, are you happy with UTD for OOS? is it easy to Fly and Transport to campus? I will send UTD an email about Housing.

My DD picked the middle tier with 14 meals/week. She has rarely eaten them all, the 10 meals/week would have been a better choice but we didn’t want her going hungry.

It depends on the plan. I think the 19 meal a week plan in a little over 2000. We’ll probably start with that one because oh my, the child can eat.

@2sunny - last year the full ride was available to OOS students. Looking at their website, it appears that may no longer be the case but I’ve always found UCF to have one of the more challenging to navigate websites for Florida schools, so I would probably contact the NM co-ordinator Luke van Blaricom (email on their website) to see if this is still offered. Before we found out DS had missed NMSF by a point, we had been specifically targeting UCF because it was the only Florida school (at the time) that offered full rides to both in and out of state students and since our residency may change this was important to us. If this has changed, it is new to this school year. I should have double checked before I typed.

Luke at UCF confirmed the huge Scholarship (it’s like a FULL RIDE for OOS)
I’m thinking KY or TX would be very good for Comp. Science (KY is 1 hour from Cincinnati, so good option for those in Midwest)

@2sunny, another thing about the breaks - Both of my DDs are bringing home friends from school for Spring Break. My DD at Pitt was asked to go her roommate,s home outside of Pittsburgh over fall break her first year. Your son may not be sitting in his dorm room over these breaks but maybe visiting other parts of the state.

Where are all the cute girls from Midwest for my son?? LOL

GTAustin you mentioned that your D at UTD had lunch with Google reps? It sounds like students at UTD have great connections for Tech/Comp. Science… do they all finds jobs in that area?

Thx @2sunny . That is cheap. Food definitely costs less in Texas than around here in MA.

I paid $1700 for a 14 meals per week plan. It may be slightly higher for the 19 meals per week plan. My son barely goes to the cafeteria, so 14 is fine.

@2sunny, UTD states that they have 100% job/graduation rate for all CS students that attempted to find one and I believe it. Many of those jobs would be in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. There was an article last year on 3/3/16 about the Spring Career Fair. It said there was 177 companies were there recruiting. I also know that Austin companies recruit there and we do have many high tech companies here. They have students that are hired at the California companies as well. CS honors increases your exposure to those companies.
Also, alot of high tech recruiting these days is done thru linked in. My older DD at Pitt got the Extreme Blue internship with IBM here in Austin thru that path. She also got numerous Google interviews as well. Recruiting has changed, especially in the high tech area. She sent resumes to recruiters that led to phone technical interviews. You have to code for an hour or more over the phone and there usually is 2 to 3 of these interviews. If you pass the technical interviews, you go to project placement which means you may or may not be placed. Its very brutal.
Interviews for the large nontech companies are more standard. They are looking for social skills as well as technical skills. I think that scenario would describe alot of the Dallas companies.

Here’s an article that list several of the companies that recruit from UTD

Thanks! @GTAustin We narrowed our 2 choices to: U of KY and UTD. Need to take tours of each place. Also, still waiting on Carnegie Mellon (late March decision) and other top choices

Good luck to you. I hope you like your visit.

@GTAustin Just sent u a PM

@2sunny re. travel, it is easy enough. There are two airports we have used. Love Field has Southwest which is sometimes our best price and option and DFW when Love is not. I’ve got three close airports at home to choose.

The train ride is free if you go to the campus traffic department and pick up your DART pass. It’s included in fees so you might as well use it. Uber is about $36-40 one way. There is a bus to the train station north of campus, but the bus stops running at 6 pm on weekends. These are things that are good to know and things you might not think of.

My son has taken the train from DFW to campus, but not to the airport since he isn’t familiar enough with it to rely on himself to get there on time. We have friends there who have been great about helping him to the airport and another friend helped him get on the train and get to the right stop and then picked him up and drove him to campus.

Our freshmen will learn soon enough how to get around. Mine hasn’t made it a priority yet.

@3scoutsmom :-* appreciate the link about recruiters in TX !!!

UTD confirmed priority housing for NMF

@Thinkerbelle can you please send fb group link for parents. My son will start attending UTD in fall 2017
