UT Dorms

Does anyone know which dorms have reputations for being the quietest or at least not as loud as most?

I heard that Jester has a reputation for being “loud into all hours of the night.”

And is it true that all-female dorms tend to be quieter than co-ed dorms?

Yeah that’s pretty much true. You might want to look at the housing page on the UT website cuz students say things about each dorm which might give you a feel for the dorm. Jester is probably the craziest. I have heard that San Jacinto, Moore-Hill, and Kinsolving tend to be a little quieter than most. You might also want to explore the option of private housing, which sometimes is cheaper than on-campus housing and you get your own private bathroom (www.austindorms.com).

University Towers (off-campus) is the nicest and where the parties are. Dobie’s alright too, much closer to campus than towers. If you’re female and want a women’s dorm, Scottish Rite or Hardin are good. Apply early.

San Jac is about the only decent on-campus dorm.

Looking back, I wouldn’t have applied to on-campus housing.

What’s wrong with the other on-campus dorms?

And aren’t on-campus dorms more convenient?

i don’t think on-campus dorms are that bad at all. personally i really like mine (kinsolving). it’s relatively close to my classes, and of course, the drag. it’s also quiet enough for ppl to study in the lounges if they don’t feel like walking to the library late at night.
of course off-campus housing generally has nicer facilities. but i don’t know if the extra money and walking distance are worth it all. i guess it’s just personal preference.

parties > convenience

Well, Jacinto is really awesome, spick-and-span (private bathrooms). Everything is new there. But getting into San Jac is about as difficult as winning the $100 million lottery, especially as a freshman. The earlier you apply for housing, they told us at the Freshman Info Session, the better your chances of getting your dorm choices.

Duren Hall is in the process of being built, the waiting list is open now. It should open Spring 2007.

Dobie is weird. I took a tour when I visited UT. It’s . . . I don’t know. I’ve heard good things (fun, good location) and bad things (A/C issues, mold, building problems, people getting sick from the building problems) about it, so it’s rather risky. There is this one GREAT suite (and incredibly expensive, too) that has this sweeping view from the Bell Tower to the State Capitol. Now, that was nice.

EDIT: To the above poster, can you tell us more about Kinsolving? I think that’s going to be one of my top three choices for housing. I just think it’s going to be safer and quieter than someplace like Jester or Prather.

Isn’t San Jacinto also the most expensive (or one of) dorms? The Duren hall seems like it would be one of the more expensive dorms too.

EuropeGirl, so Prather has a reputation for being loud?

I would like to know more about Kinsolving too. Also, does Littlefield have a reputation for being one of the quieter dorms? Besides, Jacinto, Kinsolving, and Moore-hill, what are the other dorms known for being quieter than most?

Yeah, San Jac is expensive. You get what you pay for. But, I’m an only child. I am very, very used to creature comforts, and I can stand any kind of day as long as I have a refuge somewhere. I live in Louisiana, and I’ve gone to summer programs at La schools–dorms just suck here, as a rule. Cockroaches, that sort of thing. Eeek. San Jac has a grand piano in the study lounge, with huge leather chairs. The computer room is nice, too–PCs AND Macs, with giant printers. So, San Jac is going to be my #1 choice. The girl who gave the tour of San Jac has actually got in as a freshman, so it is possible. I sent in my housing app and fee 2 days after the housing apps opened, so I hope I’m somewhere near the top of the list.

I don’t know about Prather. I just heard two people really talk “down” about it. It’s right across the street from San Jac, if my memory serves. The Dobie guy said, “If you apply for housing in November you’re going to end up at a place like Jester, or worse, Prather.”

I remember reading somewhere that San Jacinto is known as the “party dorm.” Is this true?

That’s not true; in fact, San Jacinto has a reputation of being a quieter dorm (all the dorms are quieter compared to Jester though). I haven’t visited Kinsolving but I’m pretty sure that’s one of the quieter ones.

Question - I applied for housing the day after registration opened online. Is there any way for me to only say I want on-campus housing if I get San Jacinto or a Jester dorm w/ a private bath, or if I sign up do i HAVE to take what they give me? I’d rather live in a private dorm than have a public bathroom shudder

KCirsch, you can I think decline it – you’ll lose your deposit or whatever.

Ok ok. Time to clear things up.

For people who think that off-campus dorms are inconvenient, you’re wrong wrong wrong. For the most part after freshmen year most kids move OFF campus anyway to apartments which are further away.

For the most part the only reason you’ll need access to campus is for clubs, class, and the gym. Other than that it’s not really needed too much. Every dorm, private or public will have a dorm like atmosphere. Kids are kids. Dobie is a bit less social, but dobie has other merits which I’ll get to in a bit.

Public Dorms that are quiet:

Obviously the honors dorms
San Jac is quieter too
Kinsolving will be quiet ~ i think it’s all girls?
Littlefield should be the same.
Simkins with guys

Jester… Jester is one of the more social dorms but I wouldn’t say it’s obscenely loud or anything. They have lots of activities going on, tutoring on multiple floors, etc. So don’t discount it.

Private dorms~

Dobie - Pretty good location, rooms are nice and a bit more spacious. As for these AC problems you speak of, I’ve never heard of them but I mean that can happen with all dorms – you report it and it gets fixed. The Suites are cool because you have a living room. It’ll be quieter, Dobie houses more international students and the social atmosphere is a bit dampened. The food’s supposed to be pretty good. If you want access to campus it’s pretty good, it’s practically on campus.

The Castilian – This dorm is right across the street from campus, literally. I cross guadalupe and I’m on campus. There are 2 floors that are designated quiet floors and then the other floors will vary by the people who live there. So far living here has been pretty good, I like it. At first the rooms seemed kind of small but with the furniture upgrade option I got, it doesn’t seem that bad. The RA’s are cool and they have nice things in the dorm – you can check out dvds, they have a gym, etc. standard stuff. The Food is OK. Distance from classes isn’t a problem. I can get from my dorm to across campus (castilian to the RLM building or to Jester) in about 10 minutes or so. This dorm’s cheaper than dobie but it’s more sociable and I like the location in that while public dorms are close to the campus – the Castilian is close to everything else. It’s next to everything on the drag, starbucks, 7/11, tons of food places, urban outfitters, cvs, university coop are all EXTREMELY close.

University Towers ~ very sociable dorm, pretty expensive. It’s down the street from Castilian so it’s a bit of a longer walk – but not by much. Everyone I know who lives here loves it.

Scottish Rite & Hardin House ~ I don’t know too much about these dorms but I think they’re probably quieter. They’re further from campus but they have cool things. I think at Scottish Rite they have huge sunday dinners and whatnot.

If there’s one thing I want to accomplish it’s this, living off campus isn’t a bad thing. It’s an inevitable thing. You’ll do that after freshmen year anyway. Dorms are dorms --they’re all full of kids who will be the same everywhere. Anyway, I opted for doing private mainly because I hated the idea of using public bathrooms and I was already pretty late for housing and didn’t wanna get stuck at some lame place like Simkins.

If you guys have any other questions I’ll try to address them.

Most people go off campus for good parties anyways…

THANK YOU, dcfca!!! You rock!

Heh, I heard this joke the other day… littlefield is known as virgin lane for the first semester and then slut’s palace for the 2nd

That was an awesome and very informative post, dcfca.

About that joke about Littlefield, erm, wow. Anyone know how true that is?

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with coopereratives like Eden house or Laurel house?

umm, I don’t think it’s a wise idea to do the coops for the first year…or really at all…They have drug problems and security issues, and are not exactly the kind of place for the serious student. I never lived in one, but several of my friends did, and they have many horror stories to tell. So, Just my opinion…avoid the coops

Rank for first year

For Guys:

 1. University Towers

2) Dobie (not even close to Towers)
3) San Jac

Really the only good dorm for guys is towers

Girls:

 1. Hardin House
 2. Scottish Rite
 3. University Towers (not really close to the top 2)
 4. Kinsolving, San Jac or Dobie

Would Dobie be best for a gay guy?
