UVA admission committee preference

For UVA, A student has to apply to a specific college. They also ask which is the intended major.

What is the admission criteria for Engineering school for below scenario.

Will the student who is interested in BioEngineering who could not take AP Physics because of packed schedule chose AP Bio, while other chose AP Physics over AP Bio.
As Physics is absolute must for Engineering(I would think) and Bio is a must for Bio Engineering.

It would appear to admission committee that a student has not taken a rigorous course in his/her area of interest.

Does anyone have any insight as to traditionally which student is preferred over other?
What are absolute must have courses for SEAS?

We don’t ask for your major when you apply to one of the schools. We ask about academic interests. That’s just to get to know the student a bit. No one in the School of Engineering has a major in the first year. Their data says that 80% of students declare a different one than what they put as their first choice academic interest!

We don’t have course requirements for engineers, but it would be smart to take physics in high school. If the student took physics in 11th, I’d be happy with either of the options presented for 12th.

@“Dean J” Thanks for responding. Yes, by intended major, I meant “interest” and not “major set in stone”.

Some of the schools have “integrated science” listed as course and I hope UVA admission committee is aware that it has “physics” as a part of it although not AP level.

I have seen rejections for earlier students from Engineering school while their exact same or even lesser profile peers getting admitted to College of Science. Of course, all students are uniquely different, but was trying to understand criteria of Engineering school within UVA system.

@eager2019 The part where you make a declaration about certain students being “lesser” pretty much turns me off from this conversation. You don’t even know everything that was in any student’s application, so you should not make comments about other students’ worthiness.

FWIW, the offer rate for the College and School of Engineering were pretty close last year. For OOS, Engineering was slightly less selective. Data here: http://ias.virginia.edu/university-stats-facts/undergraduate-admissions

@“Dean J” sorry if it made it sound that way. Every student and application is unique.
I was just trying to understand the differentiation of process of admittance between two schools within UVA.

Thanks for the response and thanks for answering queries in this time of of need.
