My D is going to see uva this week, she is interested in biochemistry/global health and developmental economics. Can anyone give any insight into these programs? Are the classes very large with many TA’s teaching?
also which is a good hotel to stay at close to campus?

Also any info on the Hillel would be helpful.

thanks,

The Marriot on Main St at the Corner is nice, close by. Other “walking distance” decent hotels are CavInn and Red Roof Inn.
All I can say on other questions: Intro bio/chem classes will be big, but as are all intro classes. TAs will run help sessions and labs, but professors are very willing to help outside of class. Our economics program is excellent; most go on to fabulous, top jobs.

I can tell you that the student-run Global Development Organization is very active. Students from all the different colleges participate and many participate in overseas projects sometime during winter or summer breaks.

If your daughter has a chance, she might also want to drop by UVA’s Center for Global Health. The Center’s phone # is 434-243-6383.

About UVA Hillel:
There are a good number of Jews on campus. The Hillel itself is down Rugby Rd, which is also where all of the fraternities are. In addition to Hillel (which is more Reform/liberal), there’s a Chabad house (very conservative… Girls in the kitchen while guys pray on Friday nights) and a synagogue downtown (Reform services Friday nights, conservative services Sat Mornings). There’s also a great Hebrew program, both Modern and Biblical. A lot of students who are involved in Jewish stuff also teach at the synagogue downtown. Between taking Hebrew, teaching, and being pseudo-involved in Hillel, I know a large majority of the other Jews on campus.

Hillel’s real perks here are: free bagels on the lawn every Wednesday, free Passover meals provided at Newcomb and free seders at Hillel/Chabad/etc, and of course the fact that EVERYONE Jewish you know shows up at the Bodo’s (a bagel place) “On the Corner” (little retail area near the Rotunda/Lawn) for Yom Kippur break-fast.
