However science and engineering profs are EXPECTED to bring in more than their weight in research contracts to support the overall operation. Humanities profs have the summer to work on books and research while the paid research folks have to produce year-round, supervise their labs and grad students, write grant proposals and publish as well as do appearances at other schools and all the rest. That’s why they make twice the average humanities salary.</p>
