Hey everyone. I really need your help. I need to decide based on prestige, quality of academic programs and social life which school to attend.

Accepted at:
University of Virginia (out of state) Echols Scholar
University of Rochester
Brandeis
Boston University - University Professors Program
New York Univ
George Washington
Univ of Maryland Honors

Cornell - Guaranteed Transfer offer for next august.

Please, help me make this decision. Which is the ELITE University?! I want to go to the best of the best that i have here.

the best program you got into was uva echols scholar. best academics, best social life, best reputation out of the schools you got into. i suggest going to uva, then after one year, see if you still want to take cornell on their offer. otherwise, you’ll be plenty happy at uva.

Uva Echols For Sure.

Bklyn2Cornell-
Explain to me what is meant by “guaranteed transfer offer next august” at Cornell. Does it mean that you are guaranteed admission next year as a transfer student? So, you have to attend elsewhere for one year and then you will automatically be admitted to Cornell? Are there any contingencies?

The most elite university on your list is Cornell. Judging from your CC name, perhaps Cornell is your dream school. If I understand correctly, then why don’t you go to Cornell? Maybe you can attend NYU for a year and then transfer. NYU is close to home. Or, perhaps you can inquire about taking courses for a year at Cornell as a non-matriculated student. I am not sure exactly what is possible as a non-matric, but it would be worth asking. You wouldn’t get any financial aid, though. However you could take the minimum number of courses needed to qualify as a transfer and take loans to to pay for the courses. Speak with the people in admissions and financial aid at Cornell. Find out what is possible. Talk with them if you really want Cornell. Let us know what you find out. You’ve got a month to explore your options.

UVA is a wonderful school with a beautiful campus but Cornell attracts somewhat better students and has Ivy prestige. You said prestige was important.

Don’t be impressed by the Echols Scholar program. I think that’s what they call the honors college at UVA. Honors colleges offer little advantage. They are not substantially better than the rest of the university (which in the case of UVA is really good). But, don’t fall for the honors college sales pitch.

With Cornell, guaranteed transfer is the opportunity to transfer guaranteed next year to Cornell as a second year as long as I have a 3.3 GPA at my first college.

Cornell, followed closely by UVa. The others aren’t even close to these two.

if you’re 100% on being a Cornellian (my personal preference ;)) and money might be an issue, i suggest going to which ever school is cheapest. You might as well rack up credits to transfer w/o forking out $44,000 a year.

also, talk to the academic advisors at Cornell. They will guide you on which classes to take at your other school so they will all transfer and count towards your degree rather than having 30 credits of random electives.

If you’re not 100% on Cornell, i’d go with UVA for starters.

Well Gomestar, hi btw and thanks for all the help when i applied to Cornell Early Decision. Gomestar, i didnt get accepted for fall 2006. They gave me this option for Fall 2007. I dont know who to call. And they gave me suggestions on how many credits I should have in certain disciplines. Since I cant go to Cornell, I need to choose something other than that. The consensus here seems to be UVA and im leaning strongly towards it too.

UVA is a fabulous school. I predict that you will make friends there your first year and start to feel comfortable. You won’t want to transfer. But, if you are set on Cornell, have a plan in mind.

UVa Echols is the most prestigious, and I think you’d have the most fun.

Echols is AWESOME. I wholeheartedly recommend it. :D

bklyn - yes, i’m aware of the GT thing, my suggestions are in light of that. If you’re set on Cornell, might as well go wherever is cheapest for the 1 year before transfering.

I already decided. The verdict is … UVA ECHOLS! I sent in my acceptance deposit already (which was waived). I got a full tuition to UVA Echols by the way. Every penny covered AND a free laptop. Now should i transfer to Cornell? hahaha

congrats on your decision!

I doubt you’ll still want to transfer in December

echols is more than a glorified honors college

students get into any class they want
distribution requirements are waived
other perks that aren’t coming to me now…but having a sort of open curriculm can be very beneficial

brassmonkey, do u go to UVA? so u guys think i made a wise decision?

and the best question of all…do u think i will get the same/better/worse education through UVA Echols than at Cornell?
