I am a first year planning on majoring in Politics (either Government or Foreign Affairs), and I had some questions regarding selecting classes based on AP Credit. If I have a 5 on the AP Government exam, will I be able to skip to 2000 level classes? Or do first years only take classes in the 1000s? Thanks in advance!

For info on AP credit given in the college of arts and sciences see: [Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Credit | The Undergraduate College of Arts & Sciences, U.Va.](http://college.artsandsciences.virginia.edu/ap-credit)

First years are not restricted to 1000 level courses. They may sign up for any courses for which they meet the prerequisites and which have seats available.

For info on what to do if a course is closed when you register, search this forum for many suggestions on how to gain admittance to closed classes. That said, as a first semester, first year, be prepared with lots of course choices when you register and take heart that you have 7 other semesters, plus summers and January terms, to get the classes you want to take at UVa.

I believe you get the credit for the 1000 level intro class. You can take 2000 or 3000 level classes. However, as of 2 years ago, it was hard to get into any Politics classes in your first semester. You may find you it appropriate to get your required classes out of the way, and wait a little bit to take Politics classes.

Okay thanks, that’s really helpful. I’ll try prepare plenty of classes as backups then and hope for the best!!
