My son is a hs sophomore in state currently with a 4.37 weighted GPA. He’s signing up for Junior year classes this week. He is currently in AP Chemistry with an A. He wants to take AP Environmental Science next year and take AP Physics senior year. For math he is taking AP Pre Calc. Will delaying Physics hurt him with admission chances?

I’m not a UVA Admissions officer, but I think the short answer to your question would be “No.” Why would that hurt him? I have never seen here any reference that it matters which year you take an AP class. But he should take a challenging schedule, and don’t forget that performance (grades, AP test score) are also important, so the schedule needs to be realistic for him.

At our D’s school, AP Environmental Sciences is considered a weak AP class. I’d consider AP Biology. That would show three years of the most difficult science APs. Not sure you can do any better than that.

I’ve never heard of AP Precalc, but our high school required Calculus to be taken at least concurrently with AP Physics. For many kids this meant Physics had to wait until senior year. Adcomms will not care about this timing.
