UVA- How?

Hey everybody,

I am an international student from Singapore, thinking of applying to UVA. I am, however. not sure how good a school it is.

BAck Ground. SAT 1550, 2300, combined best 2350- 800 780 770
SAT II 780 790 800

I have pretty strong ECs

I am a student in probably the top school in Singapore, it has a great reputation with American colleges etc. I am a decent student, good but not top of my class - this is the top 3% of the country in the school, so loads of smart people.

Just want to know, do u think UVA can be considered a safety, MAtch ( i think so?) or a reach school for someone like me.?

Any info or helpwud be great,Thanks.

match…uva is NEVER a safety school

thanks, untitled, then do u have any suggestions for safety school?

I am willing and able to apply No financial aid. that helps int’l chances, am I right?

I do require some “name”, ie prestige. Can you help?

thanks.

as far as i know… applying no fin. aid doesnt affect chances but idk bout int’l

u want to know how prestigious UVa is or do you want me to tell you some “prestigious” safety school?

UVA is fairly well-known in the United States, especially among “people in the know” (people in academia, banking, etc.) It is among the top 25 ranked universities in the US, which is significant given that there are several thousand colleges and universities in the US. This year, a doctor in the medical school won a nobel prize, and, last year, two students were named rhodes scholars. In fact, UVA has produced the 6th highest number of rhodes scholars in the US - behind Harvard, Yale, Princeton, West Point, and Stanford.

With your credentials, you’ll have a great shot at UVA, but, as an international and out of state applicant, you won’t be able to call it a safety. I’d suggest that you apply - UVA’s a great school with great academics and a great social life. It seems to me that prospective students on CC get too caught up with the academics/prestige side of the college experience (which is important, certainly, but less so among top schools) and don’t think much about the social side of college.

Oh, and untilted, never say never, haha.

thanks. I don’t think i am too caught up with prestige, its just that with my parents paying so much money and all, its understandable that I would want to get a good quality education at a reputable uni?

I wanted to find out how UVA stands, and how I would be considered. If you are saying that UVA is a match school, then I am asking -OK, do you know any other schools that I could use as a safety?
Thanks for the help.

Umm, as far as “safety” schools are concerned, I’d consider applying to the university of miami and case western reserve, which were two of my safeties. They’ll give you good merit money, and are solid schools.

thanks cav

ahluwalia, it;s hard to choose safety schools for u based on simple facts. what field do you plan to study? (liberal arts? business? engineering??'

now, onto University Of VIRGINIA.

Founded by formal U.S. President, the person who sketched THE Declaration of Independence–>Thomas Jefferson. founded in 1812.

Thomas Jefferson lived in Monticello in Charlottesville in his late years…it;s an incredible architecture, attracts a lot of tourists to Charlottesville.

Our school’s cornerstone was handed by 3 Formal U.S. Presidents: Jefferson, Monron and Madison.

It’s a school of great tradition and prestige.

the Central Ground (campus) is one of the 3 America’s man-made sites on the United Nation World Heritage Site list…some other man-made sites on that list are the Great Wall of China, the Pyramid of Egypt…If U.S. is ever attacked, U.N. will send troops to protect University of Virginia…it;s not just a part of America, it belongs to the whole civilization. It represents DEMOCRACY. (Jefferson drafted Declaration of Independence so that U.S. could be an independent and democratic nation.

Our top departments are:
All liberal arts fields (especially English, Religious Studies, Economics, Languages, Creative writing, Government…), Business (top 10 undergrad business school and still climbing on ranking coz of new construction of soon-to-be expanded undergrad b-school). We have excellent engineering schools, Architecture school and nursing schools as well. and we have strong science departments.

for anyone out of state, uva is a reach, just as hard to get into as ivies such as cornell and penn

Our campus (which we refer to as Grounds) is one of the most beautiful/stunning campuses in the nation, not to mention historically significant.

UVa. also attracts a lot of recruiters when it comes to career service, we send kids to the very best graduate schools. The number of Rhodes Scholar recipients who graduated from UVa is third in U.S. only 2 other schools had more recipients.

thanks untitled for that history- no doubt UVA is an excellent place. I am quite confident I will be applying.

I have not fully decided yet, but probably econs/finance major.

I am really uncertan about where to apply as safety, cos right now I probably don’t have any confirmed accept.

thinking - penn chicago NU berkeley michigan UVA

none of those excellent institutions(which they are, thats why I would like to go there) can be safetys right? Cud u suggest a couple of schools for safety?

Thanks

DUDE!

I’m from Singapore!

Come to UVA. You from RJ? Basically a shoo-in. But financial aid= 0, so know where your money is coming from. Email me at mpo2d@virginia.edu if you want more info. :)

ahluwalia, UVA is definitely a safety school for you. Well over half of the students at my school who apply to UVA are accepted, and most of us have far lower test scores than you do.

that’s wrong, knivetsil. only a small number of instate students can call uva a safety. it is, however, a solid match for the OP.

This covers just about everything. But actually econ, most engg/science depts are ranked around 30-40th. Are you sure you were not referring to Stanford? ;)

aluwalia,
All the schools you are thinking about are good. If your class rank is decent, you can aim higher. Stanford has quite a few Singaporeans. I think they get around 10 each year. Considering less than 2 from England enroll at Stanford each year (average), that’s a big number from Singapore.

If you’re from RJ, I would say you have very high chances of getting in.

Thanks guys, for your encouragement!

mpo2d, I will def email you, but after As!! got A levels in 3 days. Also, YEs i think it is an advantage, cos I am not applying for finaid.

I also agree that RJC has a good rep among top schools…thats an advantage too.

Well SAm, I’ve thought about it too, but unfortunately I am not at teh top of the class - like I said, there are some phenomenal people at my school, the top of the country. You get into this HS based on your national exam results at grade 10. Not an excuse, but no I am not like representing the college in academic competitions.

Perhaps I will include another high reach, because obviously I would want as many options as possible - I don’t think or expect to get into all my choices.
The figures for Stanford from my school were 9/118 last year.

If I do apply to stanford, for example, I would not have quite the grades as the people from my school ( still good, not as good) - I would though have an advantage in test scores, and probably ECs. What do you think?
