UVa Summer Session or Ecuador?

I need some advice and opinions…
I was just admitted as a third-year transfer to UVa. I will be double majoring in Media Studies (assuming I get accepted to the major) and Spanish. I am hoping to get done as rapidly as possible and with as much study abroad as possible. With that said, I had been planning on going to Ecuador to volunteer at a school from June 1st until July 20th. That would make it impossible to attend any of the summer sessions. I have some major pre-req.s to finish and, like I said, am eager to get started and finished.

So, should I ditch to plans to Ecuador and get a semester out of the way this summer? Also, I will be paying OOS tuition for the summer, changed to in-state in Fall.

Summer session is a great way to get courses completed. Things are somewhat rushed, but also more relaxed. A couple things you need to consider: Are the classes you want to take available? And at times that won’t conflict with other classes? Could you volunteer next year instead?

From my experience, study abroad becomes harder when you hit 4th year due to major coursework you need to complete. It’s also difficult as a transfer since 60+ credits must be earned at UVA and not all study abroad programs provide ‘direct credit’ (direct credit counts like UVA credits, like you never left Grounds). You’re not going want to earn additional transfer credit, because it will be of no use to you in terms of completing the 120 needed to graduate.
