VA residents - need help with driving directions

<p>We’re planning a college visit trip in the spring and I’m getting a head start on booking flights and hotels as well as working out the order of visits. I went online to AAA to work out a Triptik for driving directions and I was surprised to see what they advised on one leg of our trip. I’m hoping someone that lives in the area can help.</p>

<p>We will be driving from Winston-Salem, NC to Williamsburg, VA, via I-85, then I-95. Most online directions suggest we then take I-295 to I-64 into Williamsburg. But AAA recommends that we exit I-95 at Temple Ave. and make our way to Route 5 and follow that all the way into W’burg. </p>

<p>Is there one route that’s better than another? I thought maybe AAA was directing us away from 295 because of construction or traffic problems but I’m not sure. I’d appreciate advice from a Richmond or Williamsburg resident!</p>

<p>I’ve found 295 to be very navigable to 64. </p>

<p>You can also try Route 60 into Williamsburg.</p>

<p>Route 5 is a nice drive, there are plantations along the way.</p>

<p>I heard this place is great, not to be missed! If you click on “directions” at the bottom, you will be able to see how Rt. 5 takes you into Williamsburg vs. Rt. 64. Route 5 is a very nice drive, a nice break from the highway.</p>

<p>patsmom, I would go for the Route 5 directions. We typically drive down from Richmond via 64 and there is always a major slowdown due to construction or an accident. When we go Route 5 (from my parents’ house in Colonial Heights) it may be a bit slower speed limit-wise, but it is very pretty and relaxing. There are the plantations and a tree-covered two lane road for part of the trip. Have fun!</p>

<p>we always enter Wmsburg via 64…it is faster depending on time of day. college trips in my experience are a bit grueling and overstimulating. best to save “savoring” time for Wmsburg area near the campus. By the way, I like to stay in the Hospitality House. It is fine…a bit run down but nice…across the street from campus and much more relaxing in location than the Hotel Row highway near the outlet malls for Tourists…although we have stayed in three or four of those hotels as well. You can let your S or D roam from Hospitality House a bit. Wm and Mary is lovely. There is a nice little shopping district on the edge of the historic district. My S had an 8am interview and there was room service for breakfast as an option. Evaluative interviews by trained upperclassmen were optional for formal applicants and my S took advantage of this opportunity.</p>
