VA Tech shooting

coronax- good link to Chicago Tribune with details about Cho-
Does anyone know what Ismail Ax means?
It was written in red ink on the shooters arm?

“The note included a rambling list of grievances, according to sources. They said Cho also died with the words “Ismail Ax” in red ink on the inside of one of his arms.”

chuckdvc,

I’ve never known someone to ask this of so it might help me understand more if you could answer. Why do you want to own a machine gun? What does one do with one?

The above is from AP article

Ismail Ax
No idea what it means, but someone already registered it as a Domain name today!!!

just read this on a blog- anyone know about it
Threatening Note Closes Texas University AP

AUSTIN, Texas – Authorities evacuated buildings at St. Edward’s University on Tuesday after a threatening note was found there, a school official said. At the same time, buildings at the University of Oklahoma were locked down after another scare there.

[Fact is machine guns are legal in about half the states but the registration and licensing is intensive. I am going through it right now.](http://www.bradycampaign.org/)

I don’t understnd- why do you need a machine gun?

you are in Kentucky is that correct?

[looks like they have pretty loose control laws- is that why you feel the need to stock up yourself?](<a href=“블로그 한국”>블로그 한국)

The Northern VA kids who are currently at Virginia Tech have gone through so much.

In 2001, the Pentagon was attacked causing much uncertainty as many parents and other loved ones were incommunicado or on lockdown for several hours.

In 2002, the DC Metro area had a 3 week sniper attack. Our way of life completely changed as we scurried from the car to a building as fast as possible. The entire fall sports season came to an abrubt halt or games were located 3 hours away. Elementary kids had no outdoor recess. Drivers were literally afraid to pump their own gas.

2006, First day of classes at VA Tech were cancelled because there was a shooter on campus. Thank goodness no one was hurt.

2007, And now this.

I really think the political agenda talk regarding gun control either pro or con should be discussed under a separate thread so we can remember Leslie, Rheema, and all the other victims.

Well a couple of the pieces I own and just bought are historical in that they were used in WW2. Also Cause I wanted it. Just like the guy who likes airplanes, fast cars, boats, etc. It is also an investment in that there can be no more machine guns manufactured since 1986 for civilian ownership. There is a limited number and the price continues to escalate. These are not accessible to just everybody. Not only do you have to go through the checks I described but they cost allot. The one just bought was 14,000. In 10 years it will be worth 25,000 since no more can enter private hands legally.

What do we do with them? Here is an example, competition.

I agree Motherdear - this is a time of solace and to remember

I did try to start another thread- in “teaching Peace” to honor the victims- however- I was chastized for not directing my efforts towards alcohol usage instead.

I guess if I don’t stick to some unwritten code I am purdah
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=331554</a></p>

I dont appreciate you quoting me and linking my words with that propaganda machine of misinformation. But those are the tactics employed by those that push your agenda. I am not surprised.

chocoholic, I am very curious about the “ismail ax” also. I tried to do a little reading. All I could find was that Ismail is the son of Ibrahim (the father of prophets in Islam religion). The only reference to “ax” that I came across was when Ibrahim took an ax and destroyed the false idols that people were worshipping.
http://www.islamicity.com/mosque/ibrahim.htm</a></p>

disclaimer: I am in no way saying that this killing had anything to do with Islam.

I am in Austin, St. Edwards is a small university here. Last nights news showed them having a candlelight vigil for victims of the VT shootings. This morning the news is that a professor found a note in a classroom that they perceived as a bomb threat. They did the prudent thing and evacuated the campus for today.

It appears to have been a hoax thankfully, with no reports of any injury. Over the next few days there will undoubtedly be similar situations in other areas of the country.

It is our job as parents to help our kids in college (and other ages) deal with this tragedy and not let the acts of one troubled young man ruin what so many young people have worked for - the chance to grow and blossom away from home under the tutelage of dedicated educators.

Thank you Momof2006 for more details and information. Your words are very reassuring, and it is most understandable that colleges are ‘taking’ extra precaution right now.

This shooter sounds as if he did fit the typical “loner” personality type mentioned earlier. From AP writer:

I found a site where some reader commented on the phrase “Ismail Ax”

“You probably already know this, but in James Fennimore Cooper’s story “The Prairie,” the settler Ishmael Bush, who is attempting to escape from civilization, sets out across the prairie with two key tools, a gun and an axe. Each has a symbolic meaning. The axe — which can either kill or provide shelter — stands for both creation and destruction. Given that the VT killer was an English major, might this be the likely meaning of the words on his arm? Just my two cents.”

today i heard about it in the news once more saying that the guy attracted attention before, since the things he wrote in his ‘creative writing’ course were more than weird, but you can’t anticipate things like that at all, it’s so bad, really what a tragedy, this is terrible

I’m very sadden to hear that Professor Jamie Bishop, who was killed yesterday at VT, was a former UNC-CH professor who taught at Carolina through 2005. His wife rec’d her PhD in Germanic Studies from Carolina as well.

I’m sure there are many, many similar connections that make this all too real and so very sad for us all.

Why is someone who sets fire to his dorm room still allowed to be a student on campus? Wouldn’t something like that be enough to get you expelled?

Some things will get you expelled from the school - and others well get you suspended from the dorm/school housing - God only knows how this guy was allowed to have a room on campus :(
