Vacuum cleaners

We have hardwood floors and oriental carpets. I need a new vacuum. Currently am using a Miele canister and it has been ok. I don’t want an attachment with beater piece because that is hard on the rugs. Suggestions?

What is your price range?

Figuring it would be 350-500. My current Miele is taped together and generally falling apart

Love this Dyson lightweight stick. It goes for about 20-30 minutes when fully charged. I have never owned a more powerful vacuum.

I have this one and love it:

I also have hardwood floors and old wool rugs. Just a few small plush rugs that are under computer chairs. The vacuum has a separate rug attachment that does spin (is that a beater?) and it works better than my old Kirby. There is a pressure release valve so you can make it gentler on more delicate rugs. It’s relatively quiet too.

@busyparent —what did you do to your Miele!!

My old one is 18 years old and still running. I brought it in for repair to a local shop and after they told me it could be one of two things, or both, running up to $350, I decided to buy a new one, since I think it was only $800. Later had old one repaired hours from here (family member) for $39 and still running strong. It now resides in the basement playroom, which is just as well, as it was heavy to lug up and down the stairs. The ‘new’ model must be six or seven years old by now and works great.

I agree that the electric beater attachment seems tough on rugs so only use it on the playroom wall-to-wall carpeting and not on the old Persian carpets or newer Stark rugs.

New Mieles (I have a Marin) come with a power brush there the brush rotation can be turned off. Plus, the suction can be adjusted with a push of a button on the canister to clean everything from bare floors to drapes. Our local appliance store periodically clears out the prior year models at 30-50% off.

I am waiting for one of my vacuums to die so that I can get a Dyson stick. My mother in law has one and it is great. She uses it on her ceramic tiles and stairs.

I got a Dyson rechargeable stick for D2 when she was in college and had a small apartment with very tight spaces. It was good but they didn’t have models available with HEPA filters back then and some of the essential plastic parts kept breaking so it only lasted 3-4 years.

I have a Shark that is both an upright and a canister that comes with a special attachment just for hardwood floors. It has a soft cloth (washable) which goes over the attachment head so there is no brush touching the floors. It sucks up everything while the dirt you can’t see stays on the cloth (like a swiffer.) I find I don’t need to bona floors as often, it also comes with attachment just for dog hair on rugs and furniture - which because I have two sheddy dogs I use a lot. The wand part also detaches so I can get under all my sofa’s, beds, dressers, etc., without needing to move anything.

We have a Shark Rotstor Professional and a Hoover Wind Tunnel. Both bagless uprights. Consumer Reports rates the Hoover higher, but I prefer the Shark. Love all the design features on the Shark. We have all hardwood with area rugs downstairs including kitchen and office, carpeted bedrooms, and mostly hardwood bathrooms.

I have this one and love it, if you buy it, get it at Costco when they offer the $70 off coupon

Costco also has 3 types of Shark rotators. I ordered one for one of my daughters. She likes it but I find it a bit heavy to use (like all uprights).

Thank you for the advice. Not too many suggestions for another Miele.

^^The reason is the price range. I give my Miele Marin vacuum cleaner 5 stars and highly recommend it, but unless it is on sale, it is going to be way above your price range.

I agree with @BunsenBurner. VERY happy with my Miele (both of them now, as described above). Still functioning after 18 years. Of course, all of my old appliances are still working; it is the newer ones that fail at five to seven years.

I used to have a Miele canister and I really liked it, but it was so darned heavy to lug around. And the cord had to be dealt with. It did last for many years, with occasional tuneups, but in my “old age” I really wanted an easy peasy vacuum. My Dyson may not be as sturdy, but it was less than half the price of a new Miele so if I need to buy two…so be it! I find that I grab the vacuum all the time to do quick cleanups and pet hair maintenance. The Miele, on the other hand, was more of a production to use.

@prospect1 – I agree completely about the weight of the older Miele canisters vacuums. My 18 year old one weighs so much more than the seven or eight year old one. Essentially the same model with same attachments and features, so they must have changed something to make it lighter. Lugging that old one around is more work than I want when vacuuming.

Mine is >10 years old but is falling apart. I don’t think I abuse it. Lol. One of the problems happened when my 20 something son used it. I have 3 bags left so need a replacement by then. Maybe I will take this to a Miele dealer and see what they say.

I love my Miele canister, too! I’ve bought several attachments as the needs have arisen. We now have mostly hardwoods (had mostly carpets when I bought it five years ago), with a couple of area rugs and carpet up the stairs into our loft. I also have the retractable cord so I’m not fighting it as @prospect1 is suggesting. In fact, a retractable cord was a non-negotiable when I got the new vacuum.
