Vanderbilt Transfer Fall 2010

as of now UNC is

but it would be nice to get into Vanderbilt
what do u think?
i have a chance

I called today and they said they sent something up by tomorrow

so, i dont know if i’ll get in
its so late
lol

im from NJ

give me your perspective?

Well its hard to tell by just GPA, especially since essays and recs are weighed heavily in transfer applications. But since you were able to get into UNC and NYU, I’d imagine you had, at the very least, decent essays and recs. That paired with your high GPA gives you a really good shot. Also, your hs stats don’t mean anything when coming in as a junior.

Where in Jersey you from?

paramus and U?

I’m from TN but have family in east brunswick.

Also, I’m visiting Vandy on Wednesday to meet with my FA counselor as well walk around campus. Has anyone else went there yet? Also, do you know when the Registrar will tell us what courses are going to transfer over and if seeing the Registrar in person will make that process go by any faster? And since I have already paid my deposit, can I get my VUnet ID ‘in person’ as opposed to waiting to get it in the mail?

Waitlisted (Probably because they somehow “misplaced” my HS transcript for ~2 months)
Will be taking myself off the list tomorrow.
Good luck to those still waiting!

I transferred here last year, so I’ll just answer a few questions and leave a comment or two…

“Would anyone know how difficult obtaining a job on campus is? Do transfers have more difficulty in being hired?”

Some of the better jobs, such as the ones working at the front desk of dorms or in the library, have already been filled for the next semester/year, so those jobs aren’t available. Most jobs though are available for transfers. Bookstore sucks at the beginning of the semester, but is pretty relaxed after that.

As for the transfer housing…

Most of the transfers I knew wound up either in Kissam singles or in Towers I and II converted doubles. A small minority of girls also ended up in VandyBarnard. Anyway, I ended up with a converted double in Towers II and my roommate never showed up, so I had the room to myself. I think most junior transfers wound up in Towers. The room was hotdogish in that it was pretty long but not that wide. Overall, my room was pretty nice. While most people hate on Kissam, the rooms aren’t bad. They might not be the best rooms on campus, but they’re very livable.

AXLE and easy classes…

AXLE just plain sucks. Luckily, most of my credits transferred so I had the majority of my AXLE requirements completed. For the Writing portion, I recommend SOC 102W w/ Spetalnick or ENGL 118W w/ Jellerson. For the Perspective portion, I recommend WGS 150 w/ Jellerson. Anything w/ Jellerson, basically. For the International portion, I recommend SOC 277 w/ Klass. Like Jellerson, I’d take any class w/ Klass.

In terms of really easy classes that you probably wouldn’t consider…ENGM 244 and CS 151 are pretty easy. In fact, my friend actually got an A+, with like a 101, in CS 151. Only bad thing is that I heard my friends prof isn’t teaching the class next semester.

Little tidbits…
In case you’re unfamiliar with the weather in Nashville, it rains often, sometimes several days in a row. I’d make sure to pack appropriate footwear, jackets, umbrellas, etc…
The places around campus get boring really fast, so if you have a car, I’d definitely recommend bringing it. Then again, I didn’t have a meal plan, so I always ate out, so those with a meal plan might not get bored.

*Oh, and if you guys have any specific questions, I’ll try to answer them. I used to be an econ major but I recently designed my own major. And please no ‘What’s Vandy like?’ or ‘How’s the Greek life there?’ type questions.

@crs1909:
your comment about the weather was definitely helpful. I don’t think I have the right rain gear at all, considering where I live… time to go get rainboots and a sturdy umbrella haha.
Can you elaborate more, just in general about what else may be useful to take in August?

Also, how much of a hassle is it to switch majors? I’m planning on switching my major before I get there, if possible, and also add a minor. Switching majors is within the same school (Peabody) but the minor is in A&S, so I don’t know how the heck that would work, or if it would work at all before moving in.

@crs1909- how would rate the experience of transferring in? Do you feel pretty integrated into the school socially at this point? If so, was that difficult? Did you know anyone there when you transferred?

nicolemae: If you’re switching majors w/in Peabody, there shouldn’t be any problems. Also, there shouldn’t be any hiccups in declaring your minor. Just fill out a form and turn it into the CAS office. I’m pretty sure if you decide to declare a minor, you have to declare it by your senior year, so you still have time.

Rugg1135: I feel like every transfer’s social experience will be different, depending on certain things, such as affability, class standing, how social their dorm is, etc…Overall, Greek life really segregates the campus into greeks and independents. I lived on a floor where everyone was independent and I became pretty close with a few of the guys on my floor, so I never really became involved in the greek life. I feel like becoming friends with the guys on my floor helped me in that I didn’t feel as lonely at the beginning of the year and I met a lot of my friends through them. If I had to impart any advice, it’d be to become friends early on with the people on your floor because they’ll definitely help to better integrate you into the school.

@crs, do transfers get priority as far as class wait-lists go?

i got waitlisted guys

:(

how long do i have wait
and will i get in?
i just mailed in my final transcript

@hahahaha - you don’t need to wait to get your VUnetId in the mail, once they process your deposit you can go online to the accepted transfer student page on the vandy website where their is the posted letter from the dean (i think the dean?) but anyways on that page scroll down a bit and you will see a link that says “get your VUnetID”. Also thats awsome your visiting!
Where are you driving/or flying in from?

and holy crap this thread has almost a 1000 posts!

Thanks Talha, they haven’t processed my deposit yet so I’ll keep checking. For anyone else, here’s the link to the page to get your VUnet ID [EPASSWORD | Vanderbilt University Information Technology Services](<a href=“Vanderbilt University”>Vanderbilt University)

Also I’m driving from Memphis.

I’m starting to email/call my admissions counselor every 2 weeks updating her on stuff. Is that bad?

sar, I think 2 weeks is a good spread.

“do transfers get priority as far as class wait-lists go?”

I very highly doubt that transfers will get any special treatment.

This upcoming fall semester is the first that Vanderbilt has used the YourEnrollmentSystem where seniors register first, then juniors and so on. At this point, everyone, except for the freshmen has registered. I’m guessing the transfers will be allowed to register around Julyish. Unfortunately for y’all, some of the better sections of classes are completely full, including the waitlist.

Visiting next week from Philadelphia and bringing my deposit. Excited to finally see the campus and check out Nashville!

still waiting…waiting…waiting…for vandy to accept me off the waitlist…
just accepted UIUC’s admission (safety school)
=O

not going to vandy so good luck for someone on the waitlist!!!
