Vanderbilt vs. USC ChemE Transfer

Hi all, just hoping to get some insight from others regarding my internal dilemma of deciding where to transfer. I’m currently at quite a good engineering school, however it is not especially great for ChemE due to a very small department.

Outside of that, it is quite a dead school and the only thing keeping me happy is the Sigma Chi chapter I’m part of. This feeds into my dilemma more because I know the chapter at Vandy is suspending and coming back Spring 2027. As for the chapter at USC, I know it is great but I also am not sure about the process of joining there because I’ve heard sometimes they just don’t even give you a chance and that would really suck.

A second aspect is sailing. I am an avid competitive sailor and it would be so cool to be part of the USC sailing team as it is a legitimate team with a legitimate coach. Sailing at Vandy is a club team however they travel to a good amount of regattas and I know I would be happier (it would definitely be better than my previous school), albeit without a dedicated coach.

The ChemE academics themselves are better at both USC and Vandy in comparison to my previous school.

I invite any and all comments, experiences, and opinions about academics and everything else about the college life at these school. Just curious to see what people think when trying to put themselves in my shoes. Thank you!

It doesn’t sound like money is a concern. If that is true, this seems like a close call. If you love sailing, do you want to be on the West Coast after college? If so, USC is the choice. Do you want to end up on the East Coast or in the South? Then I would go Vandy.

You have very specific interests outside of academics. Do your research.

–Reach out to the Sigma Chi chapter at each college being considered to understand their policies on taking in transferring members. Have you spoken to people in the chapter at schools being considered (the vibe and membership of a Greek organization is not always the same school to school)?

-Have you reached out to the USC sail coach to see if/how you might earn a spot on the team? Have you reached out to the Vandy sailing club?

–Are there any other factors you want to consider (eg. location, cost, etc.)? Have you looked into what credits will be accepted by both schools? Have you researched how the schools incorporate transfer students into campus life (ex. is there a transfer orientation, will you get housing, how do you schedule classes, etc.)?

Assuming both choices work for your major (and are ABET accredited) and assuming both are comfortably affordable, I’d go with fit.

I agree with this. Since the things pulling you are not the Chem E major but rather the campus life/greek life/sailing, I would reach out to members of these organizations to get a feel for how welcoming they are. Do they have facebook groups or Instagram groups? Check there too.

Adding: If you are at a fine engineering school, if your program is ABET accredited, and if you are happy with your social life consider if you want to transfer. A successful transfer can absolutely be done (and it may be the right move for you) but it is not always easy. You will be coming into a new situaltion when your peers are already settled in with routines, friendships, academic expectations at the college.

Good luck whatever you choose.

I believe Sigma Chi is a fraternity. If you really want to be involved with your fraternity at Vandy, that’s only one semester to wait and it could be a good opportunity to get involved in some other clubs/activities. There is no best option, so it seems that you should choose based on which location and vibe you prefer. The majority of my son’s Vandy peers ended up in New York after graduation.

Edited my posts accordingly. Ty.
