100%. A lot of kids pick business or econ as their major because they believe it’ll lead to better career outcomes. Many of them could care less about the academic aspect of it.
That’s really all it is about for us,as well as the school overall culture and reputation.
I respected the school where the Econ professor flat out said during professor panel, “Don’t major in Econ, get Cs and think you’re going to have stellar job prospects. Study what you are interested in and can do well in. You’ll be better off in the long run in all respects.”
I would ED1 Vandy. I would NOT ED2 Vandy. One year Vandy published their ED2 admissions rate and it wasn’t that much above their RD admission rate.
Your daughter is a strong candidate at the other schools. She may not need ED for them.
Ultimately, you have to make the “risk-reward” tradeoff that your daughter is comfy with. Vandy is always a longshot, but your D will get in somewhere good no matter what.
That was the original plan…ED1 to Vandy or BC. I know I said Tufts originally but I was way off…we all loved BC. Then she started back-pedaling on Boston (“too far, winters too cold”) and just really couldn’t mentally commit to try Vandy ED1. I think it worked out for the best, give or take, she got in UGA’s Honors College which has excellent academics + Greek life and the whole SEC school atmosphere.
Love it! Congratulations!
I’m glad she didn’t ED. If she wants that SEC experience - she would not have gotten it at the others - even Vandy.
Now she has time to grow into the ‘right’ decision amongst her acceptances - so many things go through these young minds - what they want today changes tomorrow.
My daughter is in her 2nd year at UGA honors (Out of state student) and loves it.
So glad you are on board. You had initial trepidation. Glad she found her ‘home’.
it’s my nature to second guess things. she doesn’t seem to.
She’s luckier than you and I. You raised her well
Update…UGA Honors admission basically sealed it…FSU offered in-state tuition, we really liked the campus and the people. UF admitted, no scholarship. UMiami 25K merit. UVA and UNC denied. Waitlisted at Vandy but her heart is not there. Visited Athens on Friday…loved it.
Just reading the subject line - this is a prime reason why maybe ED is not a good thing!! Too many kids start of wanting something - in this case a small, contained, mid size school and oola - you end up big flagship and huge campus!!
Congrats - and with Honors you get to live in the middle of campus I believe vs. the outside.
Best of luck.
congrats! we were just in Athens visiting our daughter this past weekend so maybe we saw you! seems like our kids had sort of similar paths…
Great Georgia spring weather and it was packed…some places told us 2 hour wait for dinner There was some sorority dress-up event going on as well.
we didn’t try to get into a restaurant- we did takeout (from Maepole one night and Thai Spoon the other) and ate outside.
