Who’s buying one?

Is it the same in every way as what you get through Apple? What are they charging for the phone???

Just curious…

Just curious…

One of my Ds is all excited and planning to buy one. She says they’ll be $199 and $299.

I can’t decide whether to go ahead with a Droid Incredible as I’d planned or get an Iphone. One D already has an Iphone, another has the Incredible. Both like them.

What is the difference between the two priced phones? What does $100 more get you?

I’m getting one in June when I am eligible for new every 2 upgrade. I’ve been waiting. As I have an ipod touch and an ipad … and an imac … I’m just about “i” ed out. But I will need a new phone … want one now … so an iphone is in my future.

My H has the Droid, but it was not desirable for me (well, one reason was the data price!) because of the size - it a hunk of a phone! At that time we could have got BOGO free but I declined.

Technology is always SO tempting for me…

The more expensive one has more storage on it. The iphone, to date, that you would have gotten from apple is one that works w/ at&t as they have been exclusive to at&t. at&t and verizon use completely different technologies in their networks, so while the new phone looks the same it is designed to work on verizon rather then for at&t. so you will be able to get one using at&t’s technology to work with at&t or one using verizon to work with verizon. from my experience of being with both carriers, verizon tends to have better reception and call quality.

I’m planning on replacing my Blackberry in May when I’m eligible to upgrade.

I’m in the same situation as Ready, my upgrade comes in May and I’m going to replace my Blackberry with something…

My phone is eligible for a new every 2 upgrade, so I am planning on getting the Verizon iPhone as soon as I can. From what I can tell:

1) This version of the Verizon iPhone will not be able to do internet and voice (phone) simultaneously. The ATT version of the iPhone can do this. This is the result of the CDMA (?) basic cellphone technology that Verizon uses.

2) The Verizon iPhone will be able to be a wi-fi hot-spot for up to 5 devices. The ATT iPhone does not do this. This seems like it might be useful, at least on occasion.

3) Apple will probably release an iPhone 5 this summer. It will probably be better in some way than the iPhone 4. But if you keep waiting for the next model to be released you’ll wait forever.

I think I’ll be happy with the Verizon iPhone 4. I’ve already promised to give my iPod touch to my wife, who gave hers to our daughter because our daughter’s was stolen.

Our contract with Verizon is up in August. We’ll see what we do then. I’ll let S explore the options. Maybe it will be just him & D on a plan & I’ll get my own pay-as-you-go for my non-profit. Not sure–depends on reception where he ends up living and what his research reveals. He wanted to research last time but was too slow for my tastes & we ended up with Verizon. Reception is better than T-Mobile but rates are considerably higher.

We’re also eligible for new Verizon phones in June. We’ll see how things go, but we’re definitely interested. Since getting an iPad in September, H has become a huge fan. I’m already on an iMac, have an iPod Touch, etc. cnp – are we related?

It gets you an extra $10 16GB memory chip

Yeah, but I’ll bet anything that this is a very expensive option you have to add on… (maybe available via jailbreaking)

Here’s what CNet says about the mobile hot spot feature:

Hot spot
Honestly, we weren’t expecting the Verizon iPhone to offer new features, but we love that it bests its GSM rival by offering a mobile hot spot that can support up to five devices. Though it’s hardly a new feature–Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile currently offer handsets with that functionality–it is new to Apple. And it will make the Verizon iPhone a better mobile computing device. The bad news is that customers will likely pay an additional $20 per month to use it.

Doesn’t sound like you have to jailbreak the phone, but costs $20/mo.

I was saying that you might be able to get an app from Cydia that allows the same functionality without paying Verizon

You can get an iPhone 3GS at AT&T for $49.99 - something to think about vs paying $199 for the v4 at Verizon unless one is stuck on having Verizon or stuck on the v4.

With an iPhone an important point to think about is the monthly plan cost - that’s what really adds up. I can’t believe how some people with very modest means buy an iPhone along with the monthly plan just so they can have an iPhone. The phones make sense for some people but are an expensive commitment for others.

The diff between the $199 and $299 v4 is that the former is 16GB and the latter is 32GB.

I’m stuck on staying with Verizon. We’ve waited for months and I promised that soon we would switch to ATT (because my daughter wants an iphone and even though she will pay herself she’s on our plan – individual plans are ridiculous and I know no one on one.) But I did not want to switch because I hear so much about dropped calls with ATT and because I actually like Verizon customer service. The main reason she wants an iphone versus another smart phone is to get the feature that will sync it to her mac - for calendaring, e-mail etc. Currently she drags her computer everywhere. Plus the i-phone has a camera that is better than the one she owns so she’s doing this instead of buying a new camera.

For Verizon customers planning on that “new every 2” discount promotion – Verizon is ending that promotion on Jan. 16 – interesting timing, no? If you want an iPHone – or any phone, actually – you pay full price now.

I saw that & I was looking forward to getting a new phone since the speaker on my blackberry ( which I can sync to my mac using blackberry desktop manager BTW), is going out.

From what I’ve read the “new every 2” program is grandfathered for 1 more discount for anyone in the program now, but will be discontinued for anyone signing up with VZW after January 16. As I interpret it, if you are a current VZW customer with the “new every 2” feature in your plan, you can apply your discount to get the iPhone (or any other new phone) when you are upgrade eligible, but after that - no more “new every 2.”
