I don’t think so. No human essay is flagged as AI. Put in a passage of your favorite writer from any generation. It doesn’t get flagged as AI. That is a fable. UF uses a pro version of GPTZero for current students and its very accurate.
For apps it is not detectors anymore. Someone posted the article on the VT website. There are two admissions essay reviewers. One is human and one is AI. They spent a few years testing it and rolled it out this year. If one likes the essay and one doesn’t then a third reviewer reads it and is the tie breaker. That third reviewer is human.
Students cannot get in cheating. The slightest use of AI will be detected by the AI reviewer and the application thrown out. I bet VT isn’t the only school doing this.

My daughter’s chancing results on Collegevine based on a specific Ivy school app. Each school shows its own unique profile. FRC robotics was marked highly.
Of course people wouldnt get in if they cheated. That is not what i was saying.
I know. You said AI flags human writing. I don’t believe that to be true. Not the AI detectors universities use which isn’t the stuff available online.
Yes, my son was able to get back in after he completed everything. He can still select LLCs, browse potential roommates, etc.
A simple solution to the concern over the use of AI for essays is to drop essays altogether. It’s an absurd practice anyway. Before AI (and still), wealthy families could pay college consultants to help with essays. And of course parents help with the essays too. And students fabricate stories, or intentionally choose experiences just for the essays. It’s a practice kept in place to justify college admissions staff existence and to backdoor around the Supreme Court decision against preferential treatment for minorities. Study after study shows that the best long-term predictors of student success in college are test scores and high school, rigor-adjusted, GPA.

Agree! Writing is a lost art for so many. There are also too many resources involved (tech and people) to edit, sway, brainstorm etc. I heard that Fordham is doing a timed writing prompt for students deferred to RD…good idea, as long as the student is truly the one answering the question on the other side. I think a solid review of a resume & activities list to see how well rounded a kid is + academic level/results… leave it there. And maybe demonstrated interest should matter more - will those kids more likely say yes? No magic solution, but there is a college and path for everyone! So many options out there! And if the students is driven, they’ll be fine no matter where they land

Could someone give me the skinny on this housing thing? How bad could it get if we wait until, say, mid-March to put down the enrollment deposit and sign up for housing?
I thought first year students at VT had guaranteed on campus housing - no?

To answer your question, I’ve heard that if VT is on your kid’s top 3, to get in line for housing, you must pay the enrollment fee and sign the housing contract. Apparently it’s refundable if you decide not to attend, but you have to let them know by May 1. I’ve also heard that there’s no rush…. It depends on what dorm your kid wants as some dorms are more popular and desirable than others.

My D25 did enroll and pay the housing fee last year. She then unenrolled and did receive a refund.

First year students are guaranteed on campus housing. The rush to sign the housing contract is so that students get an earlier time slot to select their dorm/room. There are some newly renovated dorms, dorms with/without A/C, a few with suites, some Living-Learning communities within dorms and a few “Residential College” dorms that require a two-year commitment to live on campus. My D23 didn’t commit until mid-April, decided against the Honors College or the LLC she thought she wanted and ended up choosing a room in one of the oldest dorms on campus but in one of the best locations, in her opinion. She couldn’t have been happier with her choice! Other than maybe 3 hot days when A/C would have been nice.

Thanks for sharing! Which dorms does she recommend for someone who’s shy but will eventually open up, who likes to hang out with friends, but doesn’t drink or smoke.
Has anyone heard about Honors College or Scholarships?
Not for my son. He said in the portal it states that Honors notifications go out by end of January which would seem like today 
I’ll update if he sees any changes to his portal. He is OOS with acceptance in engineering.
