VT has merit awards that are not need based (in addition to any athletic awards). Not a lot, but there are some. For some reason they require the FAFSA for consideration of any award. There are also department merit awards once you declare a major. Still requires an application and the FAFSA.
Yep thats what I said, some merit (not need based) from the General Scholarship application. Thats how I got some of mine. My point was, they arent UTK or USC who has formulaic handing out of money. Its a much lower likelihood.
My daughter received a non-need-based merit award. You should receive it with the acceptance, if you were awarded one. VT is not known for giving a lot of merit awards (they are a state U, after all).
Once enrolled, you should be able to access the general scholarship application and can fill that out each year. You DO have to have a FAFSA on file each year to receive merit scholarships.
General Scholarship form was due Jan 22nd, we accessed it prior to being accepted
Just curious, were you able to apply to individual departmental and memorial scholarships prior to receiving acceptance, or just the general application?
What do you see when you go to that link?
It was general and departmental. It was frustrating because my son had to write 3 essays for his department and he hasn’t even been accepted lol. Oh well, hoping for good news!
Sorry to hear that a school like Clemson would defer (or eventually deny) such a strong stat candidate as you. Perhaps they are actually doing a holistic review. Hope it was just stats that they would consider, and not values right? Wishing you all the best in your collegiate journey.
Curious if the small set of kids lucky to have gotten the early EA notification will find out about such awards today.
I’m surprised that Tech also chose to announce at 5pm today (based on their Insta post). A major hour for Virginia HS seniors—good wishes to all!
Clemson EA was a very stat-only based evaluation. They accepted everyone basically 3.95+. I have 3.94, so I was not included, but I think I will be fine RD once they go over my extracuriculars and stuff. But I’m not really worried, about it no matter what happens. I’m only doing Clemson at this point if they give me really, really good merit.
Curious about this as well…my ‘24 did receive December admission but it’s been crickets since and (honestly) has dropped way down the list as a result.
Agree. Good luck! You won’t be going to Clemson even if they accept you :-). You’ve already got, like 20 accepts? Stats shopping is a thing!
Agreed. We’re thrilled that DS received an acceptance in December, but they certainly haven’t done anything to keep the embers burning since then.
My best guess is…they werent prepared for the release so they didnt have automated emails etc set up to keep the engagement alive. Will hopefully be a good learning opportunity for them. For us, if my son is accepted at 5pm today, i will be putting down my $400 deposit at 5:01pm. Go Hokies!
Not true in my son’s case. He had much higher than a 3.95 and was deferred.
Sorry, I was talking about unweighted, not weighted. Did not make that clear. There were exceptions for those with super high test scores if they fell just below but 3.95 UW was the line they drew for EA it seems.
I assume it’s 5pm EST?
Yes that is confirmed for both VT and UVA.
Hi - wondering if anyone knows if having a sibling who graduated from VT helps at all for his sister who applied OOS and engineering.
They have said this year they were NOT using Legacy as a part of the decision process.
