Virginia Tech Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

Has anyone applied to the ISC program and heard from them?

Does anyone know if VT is big on giving merit $$ to OOS students? We are from Texas and so many people keep telling us how amazing VT is, and I know it’s a reputable school. But without some merit $$ the out of state cost it too much.

DS has almost full scholarships to Ohio State and Oklahoma University but nothing so far to VT and it’s getting late in the game.

VT is waiting on FAFSA, but from this forum and other places, VT doesn’t give out a lot of Merit, especially compared to the schools you mention. We’re OOS also, and DS was in the first wave of offers back in December and were hopeful that meant some Merit would be offered…

A figure I’ve seen is about $3,000 in merit aid as somewhat common, but I’ve never seen a higher award mentioned.

Makes sense. In Texas the two big schools, UT and A&M are known for giving very little merit aid.

Bummer because my DD was really interested in VT because of the smaller size compared to Ohio State, but without merit money it’s just too expensive. :frowning:

My DD was also accepted into the first wave in December and invited to the honors program, but nothing after that.

Are you (parents/guardians) receiving general emails from VT? I’m getting lots of communication from the other schools my son has been admitted to, but nothing from VT. I’m not sure if I should be concerned by the lack of communication, or if my son is just a knucklehead and had a typo in my email address… :woman_shrugging:

Agreed. My Hokie was awarded $18K year from Ohio State but only $3K from VT. Luckily, I have a generous tuition benefit from my employer that made the difference no problem, but I’d expect no more than $3K.

I was wondering the same thing. I was really hoping for some virtual sessions about the business school. But I haven’t seen much since the Hokie Day announcement and decision delay.

It is widely known that VT does not give OOS merit. Most I’ve seen is $3 K a year. I am a college advisor at a large public school in MD and that is the first thing I tell my students when they say they are applying to VT.

This is normal. I have a sophomore Hokie, and I never knew what was going on because they only would email my student and not include me. On the one hand it’s annoying because other schools she was admitted to did include parents on important emails, but on the other, they’re going to have to manage their own affairs once on campus, so it starts to prepare them for that. Once matriculated, your student can add you on as an authorized payer so you at least get the bursar bills, etc. but I was never looped into communications regarding much else. Being part of the good parent facebook page was very helpful (ie. the one run by Hokie parents and not by companies trying to sell things) helped to make sure we weren’t missing things, I follow a lot of VT’s social media channels (primarily Instagram) to stay informed (college of engineering, her major Dept, Dining, New student programming, etc), and sign up for whatever Depts have newsletters. It’s been fine.

Thanks so much. I appreciate hearing this. The parent page is wonderful and so informative! Lack of communication directly from the school is definitely a concern for me though (son not great at passing on info/details :woman_facepalming:) and disappointing.

I’m sure I could keep up between social media and the parents page, but I don’t like the idea of having to chase it. At least not right now as he’s deciding, or in the beginning if/when he does choose VT and he (and we) are just getting acclimated.

Thanks so much for this input, I really appreciate it. It’s good to know now so we can mentally move on to other schools. :frowning:

It’s theoretically possible you could see more, but it’s probably unlikely.

The good news is that I felt my Hokie was well informed about everything that she was getting from VT, but for whatever reason, they just don’t include the parents. It was hard on me at first because even though my kid is pretty responsible, I work in higher ed (at a private University) and am an info seeker, so the vacuum was a little puzzling and frustrating. Luckily if you have questions, there are plenty of folks on the parent page who can answer or other newbies will ask questions you didn’t even know you had, lol.

Anyone got word on merit scholarships yet?

wondering the same thing!

Do you know if they have scholarship/merit opportunities to apply for once a part of the VT community? Are specific colleges good for this?

Every year, your student will apply for the General Scholarships and then if others are applicable based on major, the system will alert them to apply.

Great question. We haven’t heard a peep from them since the initial acceptance email before the holidays. I’ll be very curious to see if anything comes out prior to April since they moved their decision day back 2 weeks.
