Yikes, in two weeks we’re flying from Seattle to Pittsburgh and driving to Penn State, then driving to Blacksburg, and flying out of Roanoke to Madison before back to Seattle… He just came back from driving four hours each way the last two days to an Admitted Student event at a local school.
haha… we are coming from California. Flying into Atlanta, visiting Auburn, Univ of Alabama, UGA, then driving to Blacksburg and flying out of Charlotte! a 4 hour drive sounds like heaven.
There seem to be a bunch of Facebook and Instagram groups for the class of 2028, but nearly all look to be created and managed by national companies that start one up for many universities. Some seem a little sketchy. Like one wants you to pay $2.99 and “subscribe.” No thanks.
Has anyone found a group that is actually run by Tech or someone actually affiliated with Tech?
I do see one called “Virginia Tech Class of 2028 by VT Reunions” and it looks like VT Reunions IS affiliated with the university. Should that be the group for students to join?
DS will likely be using one of these options… at least for a couple of years.

Thanks. Looks like some great options. I didnt see any near our city without going in the opposite direction. April 6th also wasn’t availble for OurBus. That date must be filling up?
I wouldn’t depend on these options for the Focus day visit but would def. use it for their trips back and forth once they join. I suspect most kids/parents will drive in those days given that these buses take at least a couple of extra hours.
For our area, OurBus is only available for times when a lot of students are traveling like Spring break. It is not a regular service. A lot of students carpool and share costs. There’s a Facebook group where you can post offering and looking for rides.
There are definitely options for staying on. There are some Residential Colleges with 2 year contracts, but it seems some kids who do that regret it and then want to move off after their first year. There is a housing lottery for non-freshmen, but that’s a crapshoot. But many of the LLCs encourage sophomores/upperclassmen to stay on as mentors. My Hokie is doing that this year as a sophomore and will move off campus next year. She likes the convenience of being on campus and not having to take time to cook. And the apartment she’ll be in next year is over near the academic side/engineering buildings so she can easily walk over to campus. Oh, and some of the LLCs accept sophomores in, so that’s another way to stay on. Most do move off though.
We’ll be flying in from SoCal too. Planning to visit on the 6th and attend the undergrad overview + engineering info session. Getting a feel for the campus environment will be a big factor in our decision.
we can not make the Hokie Focus due to work, does anyone know if the Open House would provide most of the same info?
Ha! “Soon…”
DD24 was accepted in Dec, but she bypassed the Honors College scholarship deadline because she wasn’t notified of being accepted by 1/7/24 (the deadline)…she didn’t think she was eligible, but was notified last week she was accepted into the HC. I had her look at the scholarship portal again last PM because the deadlines seem to be a moving target. It looks like they’ve extended some of scholarship deadlines. There was no mention of merit scholarship in her offer, but we also hadn’t submitted FAFSA by then (not sure if that makes a difference). We’re OOS, and right now VT has jumped to her #1…we’re not going to qualify for need based aid, but any help would be appreciated. Literally, I think the cost (she’s going to be a finance major, she’s pragmatic) is all that’s keeping her from committing right now.
We went to Open House last spring. I think alot of it is very similar when looking at the Hokie Focus schedule. There were alot of admitted students there. When we broke out by college, at least for Pamplin, a large percentage (maybe half?) raised their hands as admitted students.
I believe at VT you must complete a FAFSA in order to be considered for Merit Scholarships as well…
DD24 accepted in Dec. Candidly, we haven’t received alot of communications. I’ll give NCSU credit, I’ve been getting alot of parent emails (but nothing in the snail mail either). DD24 was accepted into the VT Honors College last week. We received a letter in the mail, but that’s all that has come in the mail.
It’s perhaps a little disappointing, but we’ve received SO MUCH helpful info in person.
That’s what I assume…we submitted FAFSA 1/7/24, but of course it wasn’t available before she was accepted in Dec. I’m hoping there was no mention of merit scholarships due to the FAFSA delays.
Just saw this.
Has anyone seen or received information on virtual meetings for students admitted into Pamplin?
Has anyone had experience with the VA Tech Academy of Integrated Science? My DD got an email about the program.
"ISC is a 30-credit, two-year course sequence for incoming students. The program integrates the fundamentals of chemistry, physics, biology, calculus, and linear algebra in a more collaborative and hands-on way. ISC emphasizes teamwork, skills acquisition, independent thought, and creativity. When it comes to your early prerequisite science courses, think of the ISC as an “instead of” rather than an “in addition to”.
Just came here to ask about this as well! My son applied today, seems interesting and he really is interested in the smaller class sizes since he did not get an Honors offer.
My DS asked me to look into this tonight, and on the FB parents group, there are several current and prior threads on this. Some pro’s: smaller classes, professors know you, more in depth and better understanding of the subject matter, not really many con’s from those who actually took it. Some con’s: too in-depth on topics that your student doesn’t necessarily need for their specific major, unable to waive/skip AP credited courses already earned, you have to complete the entire two-year course to earn the credits for chem/bio/physics/calc/linear alg, etc…
Again, not my DS or my experience, just paraphrasing from the Virginia Tech Parents facebook discussions…
