We are still considering Penn State, Syracuse, UConn and Va Tech. I visited VT with my older daughter (who chose Pitt) but haven’t seen it yet with my younger.
Considering the same schools! Decision making is difficult because some already offered merit scholarships (U.Miami, West Virginia, Ohio U., Quinnipiac) but don’t expect to hear about merit from Penn State, Syracuse, UConn, or Va Tech until April. Might just pick one of the colleges that offered merit already, just to be done.
Assuming zero merit from Penn State and Va Tech. Just waiting to hear from Syracuse and UConn. I anticipate big merit from DE but she doesn’t seem interested.
We have a mid-winter break Feb 19-23, so visiting Penn State, VT and Wisconsin, as our son plays a spring sport, so can’t attend later Spring events.
Just signed up for the general tours and a tour of the department for his intended major at each school.
March/April does feel late, as he’s visiting a school closer to home this weekend for their second scheduled Admitted Tour all-day event.
Good luck!!!
Very unlikely to get much merit from VT. They are stingy. My DD got $18K from Ohio State, $23K from UConn, $8K From Pitt, and $3K from VT (Fall 2022 start). Luckily, I have a generous tuition benefit from my employer that covers much of her tuition, so she’s at VT as an OOS. Sophomore in engineering, living her best life in Blacksburg. She loves it.
We are visiting the same schools in March/April. Engineering? Interesting to hear his thoughts. We are OOS for all.
CS for Penn State and Wisconsin, but Neuroscience for VT.
Note: My daughter did her acceptance right after release. She was able to login to Starrez and sign her housing contract this evening … even though she hasn’t received an email yet telling her to go to Starrez. Just a heads up for any other recent accepting students … as the housing contract date is used to determine you time slow to reserve a room … sooner the better.
To parents of current VT students, how do your upperclassmen students feel about living off campus? I know VT has housing issues and campus housing isnt guaranteed after freshman year.
I lived on campus most of my time in college. The year and half I lived off campus, I didnt like it it. It was tiring to go to school and hang around in buildings until my next class. Whereas, when I lived at school, I could just go to my room and take a nap.
My son is a junior and lives off campus, starting sophomore year. He likes it. Having his own bedroom is the biggest advantage. Sophomore year was a little more hassle because he had to take bus to campus but was generally able to schedule classes so he didn’t have big empty blocks of time. This year he moved in with friends who live a lot closer to campus so that’s not an issue.
As the person paying the bill I don’t love paying rent in the summer when he’s not there but it does make life easier that he doesn’t have to move all his stuff out or move in/out on specific days.
Just realized Hokie Day is all day, and we’d have a 4 hour drive to get to VT. Is it worth booking a hotel, or will the Admitted Student visits be sufficient?
Not a current student/parent, but most of my family (including myself) went to Virginia Tech and lived off campus for 3 years. My niece is a senior, my nephew is a recent grad and my kids have many friends who recently graduated.
I’d say they all preferred living off campus. More space, more flexibility on what/where to eat. In my day, you’d better have a 8-9am class otherwise parking was tough. They’ve built parking decks since, so I’m not sure on that. But the bus system is also very good.
My youngest went to JMU, a similar type school/college town, and lived off campus for the last 3 years. He definitely preferred off campus!
Most want to live off campus, where they can have their own space (and in some cases, their own bathroom) and can have a kitchen.
Don’t let the “champagne prices” of the newest and fanciest apartment complexes scare you. There are PLENTY of off campus options at a variety of prices and the buses pick up everywhere.
Yes, paying summer rent sucks but that’s the case at any college where you are signing a 12-month lease with a 3rd party. We live close enough to VT that my daughter goes up to Blacksburg for random weekends in the summer to hang out at her apt. Another benefit is potentially having somewhere for parents to stay on football weekends when hotels in the area are $500+ per night.
Never mind, it looks like Hokie Day is 2 sessions. Afternoon will work better for us.
Hokie Focus vs. Offered Seniors sessions during spring break. What’s the difference in terms of content?
HF day sessions (supposedly meant for students who are still deciding):
April 6 at 12:00 - 1:00 PM - Welcome and Undergraduate Overview - Burruss Hall Auditorium
April 6 at 1:15 PM -2:30 PM - College of Science Information Session - 100 McBryde Hall
April 6 at 2:45 PM - 3:30 PM - Residential Experience and Dining- Colonial Hall in Squires Student Center
Offered Seniors sessions:
9:30 AM-11:00 AM - Offered Student Session & Tour: Burruss Hall
11:30 AM - 1:15 PM - he College of Science will be offering daily information sessions and facility tours for anyone interested in learning more about their programs and opportunities, New Classroom Building Room 320
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM - Life as a Hokie & Families as Partners , Ambler Johnston
Trying to figure out if we could get it over with during spring break. Also, do any of these events have major specific sessions (which would make sense for college of science and may not for engineering or business schools)?
Admitted EA on 2/8, but have not received any paper/snail mail packet yet. Has anyone received acceptance packet/mail from VT?
No, I got in December and have not recieved anything.
Thank you!
My D is dreading the 4 hour drive to Hokie Focus. I thought kids wanted to go far from home for college? Are your kids dreading a long drive too? I’m trying to figure if this is normal teen dread, or if she is truly going to be miserable at VT.
Per the EA FAQ page, they won’t be released until late Feb… First Round of Early Action Admission Offers FAQs | Virginia Tech (vt.edu)
