did everyone receive this email?
I received one two hours ago. I’m assuming anyone who applied to the honors school did as well
I think it went to all applicants. My son got this email and he checked the “No” box on his application asking if he had interest in applying for scholarships or financial aid.
I went back and checked the common app, my son replied yes to scholarships and yes to honors college, so he is going to write the essay
VT no longer considers legacy and only marginally used it as a factor previously. It was a sort of tie breaker. Based upon what I have read on several different boards, just my opinion, they accepted students who fell well above the mean for that school (i.e. engineering, business, etc). It appears more of the offers were out of state than in-state. Typically, it is harder to get into VT from out of state.
what general scholarship application? We haven’t been sent any scholarship application. This is so confusing!
I know, I was confused at first too! On your sons portal there should be a link to VT’s scholarship hub. Once on there, he has to click “sign in” in the top right hand corner of the screen. Once he does that, a general scholarship tab should a appear. The app is very minimal, with no writing what so ever. I think the deadline is sometime at the end of the month.
It is definitely harder to get in from in-state than out of state for VT. Especially for engineering. VT posts detailed acceptance data here.

VT accepts more out of state and the yield is lower than in-state applicants.
UVA and W&M are harder to get in for out of state. Schev posts stats on Schev.edu
Your child was most likely sent an email about accessing the general scholarship site a few weeks back. Before the 12/21 acceptances. Any potential students needs to fill out that form first before being able to access a long list of scholarships. The site will focus the list based on student, but even with that many didn’t apply to my son. We did this a few weeks ago, and we are still waiting to hear back on accepted or not?!
Yes, use the sign in info from their portal.
My son (Virginia resident) was recently admitted to both The University of Pittsburgh (main campus) and Penn State (main campus) for International Studies. Is he competitive for VA Tech? Lots of AP/Dual Enrollment courses and outstanding essays.
Yeah, he is competitive. VT is about the same level as those schools.
Did everyone get the financial
Aid email today?
We received it a little after 8:00 PM EST. I hope it means that they’re going to release another batch of acceptances soon.
Hope so
We did not get a financial aid email last night. (two different students.) Are you in-state or out?
Updating to add: We DID get it. Even thought it is timestamped last night at 8:12 pm, it wasn’t there last night. It didn’t show up in the inbox until this morning. Looks like it went out to everyone (checked with some friends.)
In-state.
Its honestly just an update about FAFSA being out, how its glitchy, how it affects timing of financial aid packages. I think its just an informative email for everyone and dont think it indicates anything about more decisions etc.
Virginia Tech is not known to give merit. Three years ago my very high stats D got $3,000/year but now I believe you are only considered for merit if you do the extra essays and I doubt they give many of them money.
