If everyone has it it probably does not mean anything just confusing on that day but hopefully, we hear something soon.
So I didnt even have Honors College on my mind, until yesterday when my son said he got a reminder to fill out the honors college scholarship application, which is due Jan 10. Wonder if it is worth it to fill that application out, with yet another essay, since we dont even know if he is an Honors College kid yet.
My daughter’s domain has that, too. But crazy me took a photo on Dec 20th of the portal page and it said "admit.vt.edu back then, as well I was hoping it meant something.
Just an fyi- We are out of state, and my son got in and does not know anyone who ever went to VT.
Our son is legacy. Our daughter graduated from Tech and is there now getting a masters. We are in-state (NoVA). Son has 4.27 weighted GPA, 33 ACT, Four years crew, Eagle scout, applying for engineering. He applied EA but has not heard yet. It may be that his stats are not good enough for engineering. Posting to say it may have nothing to do with legacy and more to do with what others have posted - that VT might be getting decisions out to exceptional students to keep them interested in VT.
Yes, I think VT is seeing a bunch of exceptional applicants in a volume that they didn’t see previously in December under the ED program. They are now trying to get some of these students excited about VT, which is understandable. What I don’t understand is why they think they have sent 25% of offers for the class when they have no idea what percentage of the students who received acceptances in December will accept. The percentage may be very low and the offers sent in December may ultimately constitute less than 10% of the class.
Most large state schools do not look at mid year grades, they simply don’t have the time to review for tens of thousands of applicants.
We got that Honors College email too, will have to look at how much work the Honors application is first. I don’t know much about it at VT or if it is worth it. Was great for my older daughter at Pitt for getting priority registration.
They estimate what their typical yield is and make enough offers so that their class is close to their target.
Last year,
for OOS, their yield was almost 16%.
In-state, it was almost 49%.
That’s how they can calculate that they made roughly 25% of their offers.
I believe yields will be very different with no ED. I’d wager a cup of coffee that the yield for in state kids who received acceptances in December will be far below 49%.
IDK, daughter applied, 4.46 gpa and 33 ACT for humanities. Friend who was test optional and 4.2 GPA was accepted already. I truly think they took kids who will uniquely fill some of the top things they’re looking for early to make sure they don’t get swayed by other schools accepting now.
My DS was accepted 12/21 and has not been able to log into scholarship central. He emailed and called the school and hasn’t been able to resolve the issue. Has anyone else had difficulties?
we got an email reminding us to fill out the scholarship application for honors college students, but we don’t even know yet if he is in the honors college. Anyone else perplexed by this? What kind of stats does one need to even get into the honors college? My kid is SO WEARY of writing essays and doesn’t really want to do another one if he’s not competitive
My son got the same email reminder but he doesn’t think he even applied for the Honors College.
Has anyone who was accepted received merit award? Does VA tech give merit (different from scholarship or financial aid)
apparently it is for the Alumni Presidential, Calhoun 79, and McNamara Scholarships. anyone know anything about these scholarships?
The Honors app was just a yes or no on your son’s initial common app application. No essay associated. The Honors essay that they keep reminding people about is strictly for 3 different scholarship considerations.
That’s very helpful. Thank you.
I know, but what we are trying to figure out is what his chances are of getting those scholarships? i’d love to better understand what stats, etc are needed. He doesn’t want to spend 5 hours writing another essay for no reason…
If I had to guess, the scholarships will probably be given out based almost entirely on the essay submitted. VT will only consider a student for those awards once they have been accepted to the school and the honors college. In that case, everyone in consideration will have excellent apps so the essay will be what differences the applicants. In my opinion, as a student who has already been accepted, I don’t really see the point in filling it out, unless VT is one of your son’s top choices. The general scholarship application already puts me in consideration for a bunch of merit opportunities, and quite frankly, I’m kind of done writing essays. VT, currently, isn’t one of my top choices so keep that in mind.
