VT --> UVA Transfer (Chance Me)

I’m an African American male looking to transfer from VT to UVA and possibly switch my major from BIT to BA in Computer science. (I want to transfer as a second year.)
Stats:
3.54 College GPA
3.8 weighted HS GPA ( we use a bizarre weighting scale and would likely be at 4.1 without it)
SAT: 1300

ECs in College:
None

ECs & achievements in HS:
Many honor societies
governors school
2 commendations of distinction from superintendent
certificate of commendation from governor

2 Recommendation letters

I’m in state too.

The most important factor for transfer is your course selection. No one here should be making any guesses about your admission chances.

Check out the requirements for engineering.

@“Dean J” From my understanding, the ba in CS is in the college of arts and sciences.

When you mean course selection, are you referring to the perceived difficulty or the transferability of the course?

How much would my high school record weigh me down if I applied for fall second-year right now?

Why do you want to transfer? VT is a very good school for what you are majoring in, and a 3.54 university GPA suggests that you are plenty challenged there and are handling the challenge. Your stats are on the low side for UVA.

Outcomes seem very good, in general, for BIT at Virginia Tech. You could look into the possibility of taking a couple of additional computer science electives too. Will all your VT credits transfer to UVA if you should be accepted as a transfer?

@DadTwoGirls Isnt the average accepted gpa 3.5 according to their website? VT is good but the major is not what I expected it to be. Based on what I’ve seen and heard from the upperclassmen here, it’s far more business and hardly any IT. They’ve also severely reduced transferring to engineering to a near impossibility. A BA in CS would give me the ability to get a strong CS background while also allowing me to possibly minor in Econ. I actually managed to be waitlisted from uva so I’m not too far off it seems.

Don’t listen to the people here, you can perfectly guesstimate your chances of getting in. Are you taking transferable courses, and can you raise that GPA? Your HS GPA/SAT are considered for transfer, but DeanJ has said multiple times that college work and courses are more important. Your college GPA is a bit on the low end I won’t lie, but good chance

um, from your post history, on 12-12-17 you expressed how shocked you were to actually get into VT BIT. Are you still in high school?

The required coursework for all schools is on the transfer page. It might help to read the transfer page on our website.

It looks like you are a senior in high school. You can’t apply to transfer until a year from now. Your high school record will be a factor in our review since you’ll only have one semester of college work to show.

DeanJ, what if we have 2 full semesters of final grades to show for transfer (30+ credits)? Will high school still be as important?

BIT is a very respectable program at Virginia Tech. BIT students have lots of good job offers upon graduation. I recommend staying at VT.
