Waffle irons and waffle iron hacks

When we downsized, I ditched our waffle iron. It made two Belgian waffles. I honestly did not use it frequently at all, so it was a pretty easy decision. I am back to having more space now and am wondering if should get one again. I see all these cool looking hacks with tater tots, mac & cheese waffles, omelettes, and cinnamon rolls - among other things. I also have some keto friends who make chaffles.

Do you have a waffle iron? How frequently do you use it and what for? Do you have any fun waffle iron hacks to share?

Then I would have to decide what type/size/number of waffles I would want it to make. The round flippy ones seems cool, but they just make one large waffle. As I wrote, I had one that made the thicker, Belgian-style waffles before, but maybe a regular waffle iron is better for hacks? Maybe it doesn’t matter that much?

I’m waffling on getting a waffle iron

I have a Breville machine which makes 2 x square waffles and I use it about 4 or 5 times a month, so for me, it’s a worthwhile addition to my kitchen. I think somebody (@abasket ?) posted a recipe for a cheesy hashbrown waffle a while back; I made that several times - it was delish

We have a heavy, four-square waffle iron that I use about every two weeks to make sourdough waffles (this recipe is good for pancakes, too):

I add a bit of cinnamon and vanilla to the batter. These are the lightest, airiest, crispiest waffles ever. I freeze what we don’t eat on the day I make them. DH enjoys waffles several times a week. Sometimes I’ll pop one in the toaster and eat it plain with a cup of tea as an afternoon snack. Neither of us cares for savory waffles.

We have a one-at-a-time Belgian waffle maker (Presto Flip Over) that I got for free with my Kohl’s cash many years ago. It was an inexpensive model, but it’s been great. In fact, both kids eventually got one for themselves! We don’t make waffles often, but it’s a nice treat once in awhile.

The recipe I posted was for a chaffle! I am NOT keto but it IS delicious!

The recipe is easy:
1 egg
1 T. flour (alternative flour if for keto)
1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar is great or a parm Reggiano type)

Mix together. Pour into waffle iron (coat w/butter or whatever if non stick) till browned and crisp. Very filling and crispy! Great with an egg on top or egg and tomato. Or just with butter or a savory jam!

I just have a cheapo Oster waffle maker.

Our waffle iron is collecting dust - it does only one at a time and my husband always feels waffle number 1 is cold by the time he makes waffle number 2. We long ago had a mickey shaped one when my daughter was little.

@abasket - how many waffles does yours make at a time? Is it the flip over kind that makes one large round one?

I am gluten-free, but I used to have a recipe for waffles that used almond flour that was delicious.

Mine just makes one at a time. Would it be more practical if it made at least 2? Yes. But I just keep the batter going and we pop ones in the toaster to recrisp/warm.

Almond flour is what they recommend in the chaffle for keto or gluten free.

The recipe I posted will make one good sized waffle. If I put toppings on it and have fruit or a breakfast meat with it I might only eat 1/2 of it.

It’s meatless monday - maybe I’ll make a chaffle!

There is a mini on sale under $10 if you don’t want a big one. https://www.amazon.com/Dash-Mini-Maker-Individual-Breakfast/dp/B010TCP3SC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=usatprimeday2020-20&linkId=118189cff5b9a58d02f9b8f5b203397e&language=en_US

@Singersmom07 - my friend recommended that one as being a good size for making chaffles for using as “bread” for sandwiches.

We have one of those flip over waffle irons like you see at a hotel breakfast buffet. I love it. Before that, I had an All Clad one that made terrific perfect waffles, but it was huge and weighed a ton. I gave it to our daughter and she loves it.

We use our flip one maybe every other month. I’m thinking I should have waffles for breakfast!

I have this All-Clad one that makes 4 at a time.

It is heavy and takes up a lot of room in a cabinet but I absolutely love it! I am a huge waffle person and use it a lot. I was worried that it would be too much for our family of 3 but I found I am done faster than I would be making only 2 at a time. I love classic Belgian waffles but we also love French Toast Waffles and I have a recipe for waffle brownies that we use for killer brownie sundaes.

Since mine is a small household, I have smaller waffle iron–a round Breville.

Similar to this, but mine is an older model

I make latkes, hash browns and zucchini fritters in it. So easy.

I saw a recipe to make waffle iron falafel that I want to try. and another for quesadillas baked in a waffle iron.

I NEED that recipe for french toast waffles and falafel waffles!

We have a Dash waffle maker as well (see #8), but ours happens to make waffles with a snowflake on one side and waffle grid on the other. I really like this style for freezing/reheating - the consistency is more cake-like, particularly on reheating. Picked this up for (almost) nothing at Kohl’s on sale with Kohl’s dollars as well.

Here you go, @abasket

Sometimes I use a cinnamon swirl or raisin swirl bread (like Pepperidge Farm) but it cooks a bit faster since it is thinner bread.

@helpingmom40 And I need the waffle brownie recipe!

We have the round floppy Belgian waffle kind like hotels do. We only use it for waffles, maybe 4-5 times a year. But we put different toppings on. It usually gets hauled out when the kids and their partners and friends come visit. It got a lot of use when our kids were younger for sleepovers and slumber parties and weekend visits home from boarding school with friends in tow.

@DCCAWAMIIAIL This one’s for you!

Cornbread waffles - your favorite cornbread (add ins if you want like jalapeno, bacon, chives…) on a waffle iron!
