The kitchen essentials thread made me think of this ongoing discussion in our family…which is preferred - waffles or pancakes?
For me it’s waffles HANDS DOWN. A hot fresh crisp waffle topped with some warm fruit (blueberries, blackberries, cherries, peaches - just about anything!), a sprinkle of nuts like almonds or pecans, good quality maple syrup…yum!
I much prefer the crisp edge of waffles over pancakes. Pancakes, take it or leave it for me.
I good plain or buttermilk batter is delicious. Sometimes I will add ingredients for alternative flavor - like vanilla or banana or pumpkin.
If you haven’t had waffles in a while now is the time. Savor the waffle! (actually you can eat them savory too!)
When we made waffles, we make extra. If they don’t get eaten up, we freeze them. Pop in the toaster oven the next day, and they’re as delicious as fresh waffles.
^^^ Haha - well if I’m making breakfast I’d prefer to just focus on one! Though I have been known to make myself a waffle when everyone else wants pancakes.
My kids bodies are probably 20% chocolate chip pancake from all they ate as a kid.
I like them both. Waffles are easier to make in a waffle iron and harder to screw up (not too soggy or burnt). And they hold the syrup better so it doesn’t run all over the plate. So its the convenience for me.
Choosing would be like picking a favorite child. I’m in the both camp.
For both, straight up with maple syrup works.
For waffles, macerated strawberries and freshly whipped cream is a family favorite from the time the kids would have sleepovers and still a hit today with those in their 20s.
For pancakes, chocolate chip and blueberry are household favorites as well as a lemon ricotta pancake with a blueberry or raspberry compote.
Don’t forget the sausage and/or bacon on the side.
I make great waffles, bit not so great pancakes. So waffles it is at our house.
Toppings:
Let thaw: frozen blueberries & strawberries (use fresh if you can get good ones)
Mash some overripe bananas.
Assemble: I’m going to list in reverse order so that the list will look like the finished product
Pure maple syrup
Berries
Plain yogurt
Mashed banana
Waffle
Optional : whipped cream, variations of yogurt & fruit, if your bananas aren’t super ripe you’re better off slicing instead of mashing
Our waffle recipes are whole wheat gingerbread and carob whole wheat
The nice thing about waffles is that the butter melts on it and collects deliciously in the little pockets. Yum.
I recently made low carb waffles with almond flour and topped them with butter with maple extract in it. They tasted almost like the real thing; good enough, anyway, for someone like me who needs to really limit sugar and carbs.
My favorite pancakes are the Dutch Baby and 49 Flapjacks at the Original Pancake House, and I’ve found home recipes for both. So those would be my favorites. The first with butter, lemon, and powdered sugar, and the second maybe with Nutella and bananas.
But DH likes to make waffles with our waffle iron and I prefer that to ordinary pancakes. Especially because he’s the one who makes the batter!
Swedish pancakes from the Portage Bay restaurant in Seattle. Comes with lingonberry compote and lingonberry butter, and a trip to the fruit bar for more toppings. Best thing ever.
