Waffles or Pancakes Debate

@abasket, the “general population” is becoming more and more obese and diabetes is no longer something seen rarely. No one is saying that eating a waffle will cause anyone to drop dead of a heart attack. People who eat waffles or pancakes or bread or crackers or lots of grains and other carbohydrates ARE dropping dead of heart attacks at alarming numbers. People who eat waffles and pancakes on any kind of regular basis are probably ALSO eating a lot of other carbs as well.

I struggle with metabolic syndrome and “just a little” leads to “just a little more” and then “even more” until I end up with horrible blood markers and weight gain. I’ve heard the “oh come on, ONE won’t hurt you” more times than I can count.

I didn’t make the original statement about waffles and heart attacks, but the joke does have a little grain of truth to it.

“Grain of truth” - good pun.

I’ll leave the rest alone…if you are fortunate to be able to enjoy a waffle or pancake now and then, feel free to participate in the thread - and for those who can’t, health is more important.

I admit it - made a Dutch Baby for breakfast today. One of my better efforts.

It’s not easy to find foods that meet the low carb criteria for diabetics.
The health community talks about the issue but the food industries and the restaurants don’t care.
On one of my flights I ordered diabetic meal for my family member but I did not see any difference between the regular meal and the one called “diabetic meal”. There were bread that looked like regular bread, fruit, and ice cream. All together I think the meal had more than 30 or 40 gram of sugar.

A small waffle has about 15 gram of sugar.

If I find a place with authentic Belgian waffles, that’s what I like.

Dutch babies, yum, like crepes also.

Alas no one in my family likes breakfast so it’s very unlikely that I’ll either make them or go out for brunch.

Just to add to @Nrdsb4 point.
But this thread isn’t about healthy eating it’s about pancakes and waffles which as part of a healthy diet is fine. All of the waffles and pancakes sound delicious.
Another reason I don’t eat a lot of big weekend breakfast is that my H plays tennis on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We do a big breakfast with challah French toast and bacon or sausage when it’s someone’s birthday.

@mom60 - The link you posted talks about Weinstein.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/13/health/adult-obesity-increase-study/index.html

“The United States will not be escaping the obesity epidemic crisis anytime soon: Nearly 40% of adults and 19% of youth are obese, the highest rate the country has ever seen in all adults, according to research released Friday by the National Center for Health Statistics.”

I thought this thread was titled “waffles or pancakes debate” not “debate on whether folks should eat waffles or pancakes”.

My low carb waffles count. Because, you know, waffles.

I haven’t ever tried sugar free syrup. Is it any good?

I like both but I also love the combo of waffles and fried chicken from Roscoes. This morning I woke up to a treat…my H made French toast rolled around sausage links which we dipped in maple syrup. Wow, the best of sweet and savory!

I don’t each much of each but a like a savory pancake with red onions, green chili peppers, and cilantro.
Waffles- I think any batter put in a waffle maker can become a waffle so I wouldn’t mind that. I like the texture of waffles because they are crispy.

I have used my waffle iron for other things like grilled cheese sandwiches, tater tot ‘waffles’ even leftover mashed potato ‘waffles’.

Oh yes. Love Dutch babies. And after a couple of weeks in France, and crepes almost every day, I say crepes over either pancakes or waffles, by a mile.

Sorry about the link. It was in today’s LA Times. Though same article that @MaineLonghorn linked.
I love Chinese scallion pancakes.

I love pancakes - especially scratch made with soured milk (milk with vinegar added). Lately though we’ve been eating the Kodiak cakes when we indulge which is pretty rare. My mother makes the best waffles - beaten egg whites are integral. They’re delicious. I’m going to eat them as long as she keeps making them!

I wait for the recipe too

So true, nrdsb4. I get the “it’s just a little bit” ALL.THE.TIME. People have no idea. I’m a bread/pasta carb fan (not really into candy/cake) and it’s so stinkin’ hard. I’m not diabetic, but do have metabolic syndrome.

And sitting in a cubicle at the synagogue where I work compounds it. Everyone wants to stuff me with food because I looked so gaunt and unhealthy before…after I’d lost LOTS of weight intentionally.

Crispy Waffles, hands down. I don’t even eat pancakes, they just seem like soggy stomach lumps to me.

I don’t indulge in them much. But melted butter in the nooks and maple syrup. I don’t like the fruit stuff personally because I think it makes the waffles soggy. Maybe fruit on the side to go on the fork with it.

We had some delicious sweet “gaufe liegoise” at a Belgian brew pub when visiting D up in DC. Yeast waffles with pearl sugar and a variety of toppings. Strawberry w/chantilly cream, pistachio options, Nutella/banana - sounds overwhelmingly sweet but they were quite good. I felt okay about indulging as the rest of my meal was fairly healthy!
